Hertford Post Office
Hertford Post Office was built for the Hertford Poor Estate in 1890 by H.Norris at a cost of £2000.

The Estate owned the site, on which stood Savage's Cooper and Basket shop, with Chequer Yard to the rear.
The new Post Office was let to The Government for £120 a year until 1911, when it was sold to The Government.
The first floor was occupied by the first telephone exchange, whilst at the rear was the sorting office. The original entrance was on the left of the building, which can still be seen, but this was altered to a side entrance when the telephone exchange and sorting office were relocated to Greencoates.
The upper floors are now rooms for the adjoining Master's House Hotel.
The original post office was on the site now occupied by Saks hairdresser.

Speed Cameras Upgraded
Speed cameras in Ware Road have been upgraded to record digital images.

Hertfordshire Safety Camera Partnership started the countywide upgrade programme last year, identifying 25 sites for new equipment.
Theresa Casbard, Head of the Road Safety Unit at Hertfordshire County Council, said: ‘We are the first Partnership in the country to place an order for these fixed digital cameras. They should make a big contribution to casualty reduction. The wet film cameras that we have been using will need to be phased out as they become obsolete.”
Apart from modifications to the housings, the upgrade to digital includes a separate night flash pole.

Tesco Decision Tonight
Planning Officers are recommending that councillors approve Tesco's expansion plans at tonight's Development Control Committee meeting.

The 21 page recommendation includes a number of conditions, including a new store entrance in Mill Road, revised car park and Pick up Point layout, and improvements to the north projection of the store.
Hertford Town Council have objected to size of the expansion, complaining that "any increase has the potential to damage other major retailers and the choice of outlets."
There were 38 letters of objection, with local residents voicingtheir concerns about the impact on the town centre, traffic and parking problems, lack of measures for pedestrian and cyclists and the appearance of the enlarged elevation to Railway Street.
Hertford Civic Society support the proposals in principle, but say the impact on town centre trade has not been assessed.
The meeting will take place at the council offices in Bishops Stortford and starts at 7:30pm.
Update: Planning permission was granted by councillors at the meeting.

Commenting on the new timetable, Andrew Chivers, Managing Director National Express East Anglia said: “I am pleased to announce these improvements to our Sunday services on the Chingford, Enfield Town and Hertford East lines.
