Council To Act Against Church
East Herts Council is set to take enforcement action against Hertford Town Church over an unauthorised shed.
The shed was erected on the church's lawn at the corner of Cowbridge and Hartham Lane last Summer. A planning officer subsequently visited the church and advised that they should submit a planning application as the church was in a conservation area. A planning application was submitted later in the year and in February this year the application was turned down. However, the shed remains in place and planning officers are now recommending that enforcement action be taken to have the shed removed.

County Court To Move
Hertford County Court could relocate to Shire Hall if plans by the Court Service go ahead.
The Court currently occupies the top floor of Sovereign House and deals with civil matters such as divorce and bankruptcy. Under the plans the court would move to Shire Hall, where it would share facilities with the existing Magistrates Court. The HMCS plans are currently the subject of consultation as the service strives to cut costs by closing and merging courts across the country. Sovereign House was built in the sixties and was once the HQ of several government departments, including Social Security and employment services. However, the building is now mostly empty and in a poor state of repair.

Convicts To Remove Graffiti
Local residents are being asked to nominate areas to be cleaned of graffiti by convicted offenders as part of a special project.
The Community Payback scheme sees offenders serve justice for their crimes by carrying out community service. Residents can have graffiti removed from walls, doors and fences in the area, whilst being supervised by the Hertfordshire Probation Trust.
The project was launched in November last year by the Hertford Safer Neighbourhood Team in partnership with the Hertfordshire Probation Trust and the district and county Councils.
PC Kerry Holdgate of the Hertford Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "This is an excellent project that will see graffiti removed from our streets and help clear up our town by convicted offenders who will be serving justice for their crimes and giving something back to the community."
Kerry continued: "I would like to thank County Councillors for East Herts, Sally Newton and Peter Ruffles, who have both kindly donated money from their locality budget towards the cost of running the project and I am sure it will continue to have a positive impact on the town".
Residents can nominate an area to be cleaned by emailing environmental.crime@eastherts.gov.uk or by calling 01279 655 261 – ext 3507.
