Fullers Force Closure of The White Horse

Not for the first time, Fullers have forced the closure of The White Horse in Castle Street. It's now been closed for two weeks and as far as I'm aware there has been no comment from either the pub or brewery.

That's an odd thing to do. Did they give a reason when they closed it before? Went here just a month or so ago when they had a pop up food evening on and it was busy - and the beer and the gin were good!

Fuller's mismanagement of the pub goes back a decade (ask any of the regulars if you've got an hour spare!). There has been a steady turnover of landlords in recent years due to financial issues which Fullers refuse to acknowledge (it's a tied pub). Over the last ten years there have been three or four "forced closures" due to the sums not adding up and the pub "running out of beer" or suffering "technical difficulties".

Normally yes, they do that.

but immediately after a significant refurbish? Craziness!

Popped in last night as Stefan is quietly selling off his bottled stock.
It's true that Fullers have bankrupted him as they did Nigel and Chris before and caused quite a lot of financial harm to others who were able to escape. Stefan had fought long and hard for a rent reduction. What he got instead was a makeover and no movement on the rent. Some of the makeover was due to having used the wrong type of mortar when repairing the ceiling in the left hand bar, so that had to be redone. The rest just meant the pub was either shut or part closed whilst the rent was still expected to be paid. Having no funds left, Stefan cannot buy beer or pay rent and is waiting for Fullers to evict him at which point he'll be officially homeless and can seek help with new accommodation. I do wish they'd sell up and get out of Hertford. Won't get anywhere near their valuation though. I think they have it on their books at something approaching 4 times what the Black Horse went for. Fantasy, although that's why they charge such huge rents, to satisfy the yield required on their valuation.
