Events at Hertford Castle & Grounds in 2016

A number of events take place in the Castle Grounds each year, organised by or in association with Hertford Town Council.

Hertford Arts Festival Launch at Hertford Castle
Friday 8th April 18.00 - 20.00
Tickets priced £5 each to include a complimentary glass of sparkling wine.
50% of the ticket price will go to the Mayor of Hertford’s Charity.
This exclusive charity event will showcase a preview art piece from each of the artists taking part in the 2016 Hertford Art Trail.
The evening will give the public an opportunity to view a spectacular art exhibition in the Hertford Castle Downshire Suite. Artists will be on hand to present and answer queries. The public will also have the opportunity to purchase artwork.

Hertford Castle Craft Market & Open Day

Free Entry although donations are welcome.
To mark the end of the Hertford Arts Festival, Hertford Castle will open its doors to the public for the first time this year. Visitors are welcome to explore the Castle Gatehouse and grounds free of charge. Craft stands will exhibit an array of handmade assortments from jewellery to homeware, homemade produce to vintage clothing. Children will be able to get creative with a variety of craft based activities, many which are free of charge.

Carnival at the Castle

Visit Hertford Castle to get into the community carnival spirit. Dance along to the live acts and watch an array of entertainment perform in the castle grounds arena. Hertford Castle will also be open to the public to explore free of charge.

Hertford Castle Teddy Bears' Picnic with Brass Band Sunday 3rd July 12.00 - 16.00.

Families and friends are invited to attend the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic held in the Castle Grounds. Children are urged to bring along a teddy, join in a bear hunt, teddy bear parade and watch the Punch and Judy show.

A live brass band concert will perform for visitors to enjoy and Hertford Castle will be open to the public. In addition for 2016, water activities will be available on the River Lea for children and adults to take part in.

Rock at the Castle Sunday 7th August 12:30 - 19:30
Donation on Entry
Multiple music stages surround the Castle where live bands, musicians and acoustic acts play to the public. From Rock to Folk, Indie to Pop, this music festival has something for everyone. Food stalls and pop up bar available for refreshments.

Discover Hertford Castle Tours & Brass Band Concert

Hertford Castle will be open to the public with guided tours of the historical Grade 1 Listed building. Learn about its history and royal connections. Visitors can also book onto a Castle Walls and Grounds tour. A traditional Brass Band concert will be performing live on the Castle lawn for visitors to sit back, relax and soak up the views.
This event will also mark the 800th year anniversary of the Siege of Hertford Castle.

Hertford Castle Open Air Cinema

Hertford Castle will host an Open Air Cinema screening of The Blues Brothers with the Castle as its backdrop. Spectators can bring along picnic chairs, snacks and sit back to relax and enjoy the movie underneath the stars. Refreshments available. This spectacular evening sold out last year so tickets must be purchased in advance.

Hertford Heritage Day at Hertford Castle

As part of National Heritage Weekend, Hertford Castle will open its doors to the public free of charge. Visitors will be able to explore the basement, dungeons, Robing Room and Downshire Suite. The Castle lawn will host a medieval encampment, medieval battles, falconry and much more. Whilst in Hertford, visitors can enjoy the historic photo trail of historic photographs of buildings from the past.

Hertford Castle Beer & World Food Festival
Sunday 9th October 12noon - 18:00 Free Entry
Hertford Castle grounds will be filled with a multitude of world food stalls from Italian to Chinese, Thai to Mexican. The Castle Beer festival will be contained in a large marquee on the lawn offering a variety of local and national beers, ales and cider. With live music, entry into the Castle, food and drink, this is an event not to be missed!

Carols at the Castle

Join the Mayor for Carols at the Castle. Mince pies and Mulled wine will be served at the performance.
