Grass Track Cycle Racing
North Road Cycling Club staged their sixth grass track race meeting on Hartham Common on Sunday 22nd May 2005.
The meeting, which returned to Hartham in 2000 following a 35 year absence, was held on a circuit alongside Hartham Swimming Pool.
Bicycle grass track racing was regularly held as part of the annual Hertford Whit Monday Fete until 1965 when County Day was initiated.
In the early 1930s, the event featured hundreds of riders and thousands of spectators. The new event was on the weekend before Whitsun so as not to clash with other events and attracted a strong field of riders.
The bicycles are track bicycles with a fixed wheel, no brakes and tyres suitable for racing on grass.
