Just been sent this photo - the mentality of some defies belief in damaging works of art and historical pieces. Hope they catch them and try to pull off their heads.

Indeed, absolutely shocking. It must have required some force to do that sort of damage.

Our daughter sent us a copy of this vandalism even though she is not living in Hertford any more but a bit of her still does. I really don't understand how or why people do this. It is as much an icon as the view from Folly Bridge or Lussmans Egyptian style exterior decor. I saw Cllr Ruffles this morning and he mentioned that it has met with many accidents in the past. He hadn't seen this one but this was no accident. As he said he can't be the only one who after one over the eight has bumped into this gentleman on the way home and said 'sorry'.

I don't think it is covered by any of the town CCTV cameras, possibly just in sight of the one at Old Cross. Such mindless acts really do need a suitable punishment. I was always so proud to take visitors around the town and point out all the architectural and historic points of interest. I only hope the snuffer above escaped damage although if there was any poetic justice it would have fallen on the perpetrators and left them as stone cold as the old man himself.

Ooo er! Let's hope they do a better job on the restoration than was made on the remains of St Mary the Less!
