Media House plans appealed

Friday 12 July 2019

A property developer is appealing against refusal of planning permission to add a third storey to Media House in Ware Road,

The two-storey building was recently converted to residential properties by Broxbourne-based LW Devceloipments after being vacated by local newspaper the Hertfordshire Mercury. The building had previously been offices for manufacturer Addis when they were based in the town.

Planning permission to build an additional storey was refused by East Herts District Council in August 2018 on the grounds of overdevelopment, stating:

The proposed development by reason of its siting, height, massing and scale would detract from the appearance of the building, the character and setting of Hertford Conservation Area and the setting of the adjoining listed building

The building dates from the 1950s and is not listed, unlike the neighbouring building to the immediate west, which was built in 1935 and listed in 1994.

The appeal is due to be heard in the coming months with final submissions due in August.
