Campaign group comments on Bircherley Green

Friday 12 June 2020

The We Are Hertford community campaign have submitted a public comment on amended plans to redevelop Bircherley Green shopping centre.

In a written submission to the district council, the group welcomed the additions made by developer Chase New Homes and expressed their eagerness to see the development begin. The group are also pleased that the designs are in keeping with the historic nature of the town centre and takes full advantage of the river front.

However, the campaign did highlight some improvements they would like to see, including:

  • more toilet facilities included in and around the bus station.
  • improvements to the façade of the planned hotel.
  • improvements to the external appearance of the car park.
  • measures to reduce the risk of litter to wildlife in and around the river.
  • improvements to the provision of storage for bicycles

The group noted that while buildings up to a height of five stories were approved by the Hertford Urban Design Strategy a consultation meeting with the Folly Island residents - who will be most affected by this - has not been agreed.

The We Are Hertford campaign is an independent, community campaign which aims to bring local groups together behind a common cause, and find ways of campaigning on issues in our local area in a way that is relevant to our community. The group’s objective is to find common ground between local people, and to work with residents, businesses and other stakeholders to influence real change on issues that matter to those in Hertford.
