Platforms at Hertford East Station are to be extended to accomodate new 10-car trains being introduced later in the year.
Network Rail has applied for planning permission to extend the platforms and relocate the old signal box to the community heritage railway in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. The signal box, which is a listed building, became redundant when the signalling system was automated over 10 year ago.
The plans are subject to approval by East Herts District Council.

Abellio are introducing 111 new Aventura trains from 2019, replacing their entire rolling stock. The new trains will be longer than the existing 8-car sets currently operating on the branch line. The ten carriages will seat 1100 passengers.

The current franchise for the line is operated by Dutch company Abellio and runs until 2025.
