A high pressure water main has been fractured by workmen in the town centre.
An engineer from Affinity Water arrived on site around 5:15pm after enhancement work was forced to stop when equipment punctured the main at the junction of Salisbury Square and Market Place.
Thousands of gallons of water are being lost as a 15 foot spout marks the spot where contractors hit the main.
It is not known how long it was take the water company to bring the leak under control and carry out repairs.
Update 22:12: Teams will be working overnight to fix the leak. 179 properties in Fore Street and Churchfields are without water.
