Bircherley Green shopping centre was built in the early 1980s on the site of the town's first bus station. A new smaller bus station was incorporated into the development. Waitrose, Boots, Starbucks and smaller independent shops can be found here. Click here on the map for more information.

The former dormitories of Christ's Hospital were built in 1904, replacing school buildings that dated back to 1682. The school left the town in the 1984 and the buildings were converted to offices and flats.

Hertford Library in Old Cross was built in 1888 and opened by the town's MP A.J.Balfour, who later went on to become Prime Minister.

The Corn Exchange was built in 1858 on what was the site of the County Gaol. At one time it was a library.

Shire Hall houses the town's magistrates' court. It was built between 1767 and 1769 and replaced the Elizabethan Town Hall.

All Saints Church was built during the final years of the 19th century, following a fire which destroyed the earlier church.

St.Andrew's Church was built in 1869 and replaced an earlier 15th church

Hertford Castle gatehouse. The Castle itself fell into disrepair and disappeared during the early 17th century

St.Nicholas Hall, formerly the Verger's House, is circa 1450. Cottages which once stood behind the building were demolished in 1892 and replaced by St.Nicholas Hall. The two buildings were not joined however until 1970. The Hall is named after the medieval parish of that name.

The fountain in Salisbury Square is named Confluence and was a gift to the town.

The Friends Meeting House, built in 1669.

The disused Hertford Brewery, sold to Sainsbury's in 2006. McMullens continue to brew in a smaller adjacent brewery.

Hertford East Station connects with Liverpool Street station in London. The station was built in 1888, replacing an earlier station a few hundred yards east.

Castle Hall is the town's main venue for concerts, plays and other performances.

The Seed Warehouse and Mill Bridge Rooms are part of Hertford Museum.

Hartham Common is a large open space north of the town centre and is home to a number of sporting activities, including swimming, tennis, bowls and football.

The Hertford Basin in home to a number of boat-dwellers. The weir was opened in 1988.

The Castle Grounds feature 12th century curtain walls built by Henry II. The open space in front of the gatehouse is often used for events organised by the Town Council, who occupy the building.

Remains of the Church of St.Mary The Less were discovered when the library was built. The church is one of two mentioned in The Domesday Book..
