Where's the rave?

Somewhere to the south of Hertford there appears to be some sort of rave going on. I've just spoken to the police and they're being inundated with calls.

Was it coming from Hartham Common? What a racket and will teach me not to forgo my normal Saturday night alcohol intake. Where on earth were the police - sorry that's a stupid question !

Definitely not Hartham. If it was a rave, simply sending round a handful of police wouldn't make any difference, it would be a job for the riot squad. The police are pretty stretched on a Saturday night as it is.

Whooo! Great party! Just got in! (OK, I nicked that gag from Ware Online, where there is also a thread from residents kept awake by the noise). I understand the rave was somewhere near Balls Park and was broken up by the Police without incident or arrests sometime around 3ish.

Wondered where the block rockin' beats were coming from last night - heard quite clearly up here in Bengeo. Never thought I'd hear the words illegal, rave and Hertford in the same sentence.

I'm told that they had permission from the landowner, but that he/she didn't quite realise the scale of the event.

Raves are far harder to deal with than parties as police are of course vastly outnumbered and often let them die a natural death around the time most people wake up - although one disgruntled couple not from round these parts took the matter in their own hands and blasted the sound system with shotguns - end of problem.

I would be surprised. From my house I can usually hear the tackles on a Saturday afternoon and I heard nothing last night.

I thought at one stage it was coming from the Police HQ social club ... based speculatively on the lack of action to stop the flippin' noise.

Heard in The Avenue, Bengeo. I also saw Fireworks !!! that only started about 10.00..pm.. as I was watching Parky on Saturday!!! I think they were around the bottom of Bengeo, not far from Beane road.. whoever had the rave has successfully disturbed all of Hertford... did their neighbours not realise and call the police to get a precise location??? I am all for parties, but hey, keep the noise indoors!!!!

As i mentioned previously the police's policy is gently gently approach when they are vastly outnumbered...2.30am was probably a compromise reached between the two parties - no arrests, no paperwork etc etc.

Reply ID 11114

2.30am is not a compromise for all the residents of hertford who could not sleep. a 'gently gently' approach is just not good enough given the number of people affected. If the police stood back because they wer outnumbered, that is disgraceful. If as is posted on another reply a landowner gave permission for this event, the landowner should be prosecuted. Yes I also was young once but there are plenty of licenced outlets for this type of activity. [:(!]

We were kept awake all night over near Foxholes. I'd be interested to know what steps are going to be taken to make sure this doesn't happen again. Ihave a 3 month old baby so I get little enough sleep as it is, without being kept awake un-necessarily. I used to live in Hackney, and never experienced any party or event as loud as that - we moved to Hertford for some peace and quiet. I hope the owner of the field, or where-ever it took place, is named and shamed (and hopefully will issue an apology). Farmers and landowners always claim to be 'surprised' by the scale of unauthorised rave events, though one assumes they are not surprised by the large amount of money appearing in their bank accounts. The police/environmental health response did seem a bit slow considering the number of complaints that they must have received. I await the police's statement with interest.

http://www.herts.police.uk/crimedatabase/site/content.php?article_id=1865 HERTFORD RAVE STOPPED BY POLICE By Corporate Communication Dept FOLLOWING a large number of calls on Sunday morning (October 16), police attended and successfully disbanded a ‘rave’ near Balls Park, Hertford without incident. Shortly after 1am, police received over 100 noise complaints from residents in the Hertford area regarding an ‘open air’ party that had commenced without prior notification to police. Officers quickly responded and after an intensive search of the area, managed to locate a group of around 150 people in an isolated field near Balls Park. Inspector Pat Rawle said: “ After a short period of negotiation, the music was quickly turned off and officers directed the group to leave the land. The party-goers then left the area peacefully. At the same time, authority was given to designate the event as a ‘rave’ thereby enacting police powers to arrest anyone who refused to leave, or returned to the scene. This law also gives police the power to confiscate audio equipment if necessary. “The group was very co-operative, and no arrests were necessary. In a relatively short period of time everyone left the area, taking all property and litter with them.” He added: “Even if you have permission from the landowner, raves are still illegal and anyone planning to hold one will be dealt with robustly by police. These events can often cause distress and inconvenience to nearby residents, as well as stretching resources during periods of high police demand’.

Maybe you wish they had arrested all of the party goers and then spent the next 24 hours doing the paperwork - wonder what would have happened then if there had been an incident and you couldn't get hold of police. Seems to me that no matter what the police do they're in the wrong. Problem is you are blaming the wrong people. The police that there are do a hard job as well as they can considering their resources are stretched to the max. If you want to complain to anyone write to your MP about lack of police in the area. I'm sure every police officer in the country would like more police on the beat to help lighten their very heavy load. C

I fully appreciate the problems of police staffing, however south hertford and ware experienced two and a half hours of severe noise pollution after midnight-too long. I would have liked the organisers arrested and perhaps the landowner, otherwise we could 'raves' every weekend simply moving from one property to another.

I agree. There are too few police available to wade into 150 youngsters, seeking out the organisers and locking them up for the night, along with the landlord. Noise pollution is not fun but it's a minor offence compared to the crimes that I want my overstretched and under resourced police force to be available to deal with. Besides, all the late night fireworks and Stansted's planes mean plenty of noise pollution anyway.

Reply ID 11166

18/10/2005 by Victor Meldrew

What rubbish. The planes from Stansted last a matter of a few seconds and are not that noisey. The boom diddy boom that we all had to put up with on Saturday lasted 3 1/2 hours. Im glad that I dont live closer, otherwise the overstretched Police force may have had a more serious crime to deal with.

I think not. Last November 5th one of our neighbours (Gill & Jez know who) had a firework display to match the professionals that lasted for nearly 3 hours. I phoned the police after 2 hours and they said they wouldn't do anything about it.

For all those who think noise from the rave was a minor issue, on Sat/sun i can only describe the effect as being similar to a car stereo with full bass effect blasting away outside the front door and I live miles yes miles from the source.

Just referring you to the discussion thread about airport noise, Victor seemed to be able to sleep through it, most people thought it was getting worse and was continuous and it appears to be likely that night flights are on the increase. http://www.hertford.net/yoursay/topic.php?id=857&whichpage=3 This [rave] example of noise pollution was undoubtedly a throroughly unpleasant experience and one I would not wish on anyone. However, arresting and locking up people does not seem appropriate when there is no danger of damage to people or property. Just as, despite the extreme annoyance of late night fireworks in the neighbourhood, I would not expect the police to arrest the bloke up the road for setting off a Super Rocket bought from the local newsagents as the culmination of a 30 minute display in his back garden - even if it didn't start until after the dinner party finished at 11.00pm. My gripe is with shop sales to non-licenced purchasers i.e. Joe Public, who can then let off fireworks as and when, or sell them to a 13 year old.

I brought my new born twin boys home from hospital on Saturday. Living a few hundred yards from the "Rave", you can imagine how badly they settled on their first night in Hertford. I complained to the police and then spent 2 hours pacing the babies up and down trying to calm them down, while the police acted at the speed of a snail. This town used to be brilliant. What went wrong?

This might be taken the wrong way by you lot but, does anyone know anyone that attended that Rave? The noise did p me off because its inconsiderate to people trying to sleep. I listen to quite a lot of that type of music and I was sat in my room, actually listening to some Trance (not that Hard stuff that was being played) and I had my headphones on when my mum came rushing in at about 1am going off on one at me as my music was keeping her awake.... my response was "what the ???? ?" I then opened my window and couldnt believe the noise! That DJ was very good though, he was playing some quality stuff :P But yes, very annoying for people trying to sleep :( If anyone has any info on anyone that attended the "rave" plz let me know, I dont know of anyone in the Hertford area that likes Hard Trance etc, I thought I was a one-off! :(
