The Snug

(on the premises of the former Bar Humbug) Went there last night on its opening night, it is really plush and comfortable, lounge music in the background, friendly. The white wine was served in a chilled glass, and we had quesadillas (a light snack) which were absolutely delicious. An added bonus is that it is a smoke free bar! I thoroughly recommend it[:)]

Do you think it will be a Baroosh type venue on the weekends or a little bit older/quieter crowd !

In there again last night, it was crowded (proving there is a good demand for a non smoking pub) and it was crowded, earlier in the evening with a more mature clientelle, later in the evening with early 20 somethings! so pretty much the same type as Baroosh, but non smokers who also like to talk and hear what the reply is[:)]

I went there with Mrs. newcomer for the first time early Friday evening. It wasn't packed by then and we thought it was very relaxed and pleasant and will definitley be going back. We thought it would be the perfect place for a late night drink (spirits/coffee) on the way home. Does anyone know when it stays open til?

When I went is was relaxed, quiet music, table service. The kitchens weren’t ready to do anything more than light snacks (Quesadilla was very nice though). Friendly staff. Really laid back atmosphere. Non-smoking is great. I didn’t get a proper look at the draught beers, but from a quick glance it wasn’t that unusual (it’s not Baroosh I know, but they do have a few more unusual draught beers like Leffe and Erdinger and the town is already well catered for on the ale side elsewhere). Décor was ok, seemed a bit on the value-Habitat/Ikea/Changing Rooms style to me and no real identity (again, apologies for comparing to Baroosh as I’m certain they probably only want a small part of their demographic but that place is well styled and decorated and certainly has a genuine ‘feel’ about it). Lastly, I’m no rose wine expert but at close to £5.50 a glass I thought was rather expensive.

Went in tonight for a couple - great to find a non-smoking place where Mrs. Joby can drink smoothies for the rest of her pregnancy. It's a great little place and a top addition to Hertford. I'm no wine expert but the wine menu will keep me going for a while. Didn't find it too pricy, either - above average for sure, but not as bad as I'd been lead to expect by other posts on here. Anyone tried their fish and chips yet? p.s. word of warning - if it's cold out, don't sit near the fire exit (right hand side of bar) as the smokers keep nipping in and out for a fag - brrrr!

Popped Friday for a quick drink the way to the Raj, welcomed in (nice), shown to a table (nice), waitress service (nice) draft 1664 blanc (nice) 6 girls wander past open up the fire exit for a fag freezing. NOT IMPRESSED. If you are gong to sit people next to the fire exit let them know they may encounter Siberian temperatures!

surely they should just place an alarm on the door, stop people using it and tell them to leave via the front door if they are that desperate for a fag? I'm so glad Hertford now has a non-smoking pub. Finally you can go for a night out without having to smell the stench of stale fag smoke on your clothes in the morning. I think I will be a regular, especially on teh K1664 blanc!!!

The Staff were all fully aware of what was happening and I believe even may have shown people to the garden. It totally ruined the whole experience, fortunately we were only staying for one before eating, as had we wanted to settle for the evening,I would have been compelled to seek a warmer bar. You are either a non smoking establishment or a smoking one. You don't see people being ushered out of the fire exit in The Hillside for a fag.

Fantastic place .. i say ..Shame to see fosters and some usual suspects on the beer front, but the San Miguel impressed me. Im more of a cocktail drinker, to let u know there the best ive tried in ages, i go to 'posh' bars in London and they definetly compete with them, but without the pretenciousness. I know what u mean about the fire exit to the smoking room outside, sorry if i left the door open to long for non- smokers.. ha.. but im the only one in my group of friends who smokes, so what im i supposed to do ?? my friends were in there for the night !! guess i will try and quit. Summer will be great, huge decking outside for garden party!! My train got delayed on Sunday morning, had time to kill and was surprised to see the Snug open for Breakfast ... i tried the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon ...for the first time im glad my train got delayed ... very tasty !! 5 stars all around. hasta luego

Agree with your comments on the Snug.Dont worry too much about that miserable Meldrew, he just thinks he is in control of every pub in hertford, I am sure the managers/owners would not consider for one moment even letting him know where any keys are. Any ideas forum members where we can buy a gas mask for Meldrew, it may well suit two purposes the second being to shut him up and give us all a rest from his negativity.

The Quesadillas were nice, but the potato skins I had were not fully cooked, and it seems I was being served a sliced up mircowaved jacket potato. It made a nice change, but I think the over the top beer and wine prices will stop me going back in a hurry. The owners must be in a competition with the Barge to see who can get away with charging the most for wine!

Went for Brunch on Friday and was very pleased with my Full English. The pancakes also come highly recommended. Very soothing atmosphere for those more 'fragile' mornings. [xx(] Noticed the addition of a Fruit Machine in the Corner, which really didn't fit with the 'Lounge Bar' Decor. I would have thought a 'One-Arm Bandit' or Video Poker would more in keeping with the Vegas vibe.

Beardy's?? Spotty Dog, you obviously do not have a clue!!! Oh, by the way, according to a reliable source, I do believe they are selling Adnams REAL ALE in The Snug. Let's see what they say for themselves shall we? If they are, all well and good and they will get more customers which is what they ultimately want there surely? Justin is entitled to his point of view and to express it, as long as everyone is aware of his position. The Snug is hardly competition for The Hillside and Justin is qualified enough to voice an "expert opinion". You don't have to agree with him. So long as everyone understands that he is involved with The Hillside and has high standards. It is up to the reader to decide how much weight to give to his remarks.

No, I probably don't have a clue! "Beardys" is more of an attitude than mere facial hair....! My view is that if you advertise something as a plush lounge type establishment serving cocktails etc, then real ale doesn't really fit. You either go for an image, or you try and attract everyone. As I say, my view! Lager lout or Lounge lizard - hmm, interesting choice - I would have preferred lounge lout or lager lizard!

Gotta agree with spotty dog, I can't see the regulars of the OXT or the White Horse being happy with the introduction of a coctail list, soft furnishings and subtle lighting. Your either one or the other, I think your lucky they serve Adnams, Baroosh only sell that muck Country. (my opinion)[8D]

Some people are able to enjoy a variety of alcoholic beverages, from overpriced wines to chewy ales. But more to the point, when I go out with a group of friends, some prefer ale, some prefer lager, some prefer alco pops, some prefer wine and some just whine. I would guess that The Snug has realised that there needs to be a little bit to please the oddball in the party - just as the White Horse has (I do believe they serve fizzy pop).

Sorry to disappoint, as I was when I ordered. But the Leffe in the Snug, was a figment of someone's imagination. The only Belgian equivalent is a pint of White Numbers (That's Kronenberg))

I was in for the first time two Saturdays ago and a nice chap called Giles introduced himself to us. He told us he had another pub by the same name, in Cambridge and was trying to create something different in Hertford. We wished him good luck. We enjoyed our wine that night and the snacks. The ambience was also quite nice with sofas and subdued lighting. We returned on Monday the 12th to find it rather brightly lit with an altogether different atmosphere. We thought we'd try again last Saturday but on approaching found it too brightly lit again. I'd just like to ask why the lighting has been changed, as in my opinion the dim lighting made it feel very cosy but brightly lit it feels cold. I went in The Snug for the first time last Friday night for a few drinks after a meal at Bollywoods with a group of all sorts of people and I have to say it topped the evening off perfectly. I was with an Australian who found it amusing that it was so novel for us and exciting to be coming away from a drinking establishment without the smell of ciggarette smoke all around and in your hair etc etc....brilliant!! The lighting was nice, the music was nice the oh so busy two barmen still managed to do a brilliant job with all our cocktails (which were v. yummy) even though they were snowed under. I hope it doesnt end up like Baroosh. I do like Baroosh in the week but at the weekends I have to say you have to almost force me anywhere near it!

Went in for the first time last night and resolved to visit many more times in the future. In fact, that resolution was proposed by my wife, a change from the usual "we must resolve to lose weight by not drinking or eating anything that's tasty". That speaks volumes for an establishment that offers a good selection of wines, cocktails and food with a guarantee of a smoke free environment.

Maddy, It takes time to get used to Victor's postings. Eventually, you'll learn to ignore the parts you disagree with and pick out the parts you do agree with. Sometimes the posting is a ploy to incite frantic debate/over reaction when really I suspect that Victor is quite indifferent to the opinions of others. I think most members have been guilty of reacting to Victor's postings. It does add spice to the daily grind of working life. Gobby's reactions to Victor have been a highlight of the last couple of months. If you're lucky, we might see Gobby in action again soon. Meldrew, you are out of touch and out of date, most of your comments on this forum are negative, as I suspect is your lifestyle. This forum is or was designed for people to air comments on various places, good as well as bad. I suspect that a number of people who run establishments like the Snug are sometimes offended by remarks made by forum members, but then thats how it is and they have to accept it. You on the other hand, argue at every turn if the comment made does not fit in with your opinion. As for me going on holiday, I am waiting to see where you go, so I dont bump into you. Gobby, Forum 1) a place to express yourself. a medium, for example a magazine or newspaper, in which the public may debate an issue or express opinions I doubt the Snug feel offended about the fire door comment. Your comments however, are very offensive. My lifestyle (not that it is anything to do you with) is very up to date and extremely positive. (Wife, Son, friends, health, job (My opinion of course)) Holidays, 5 star and warm so I wouldn't worry yourself. Me, personal, Ha! that's the best one you have said to date. Have a read of some of your previous posts. (the last one in particular) Argumentative, of course! if we all rolled over and agreed there would be no need for a forum.

Oh my word! didn't realise my comments would've caused such a stir! sorry victor, it's just with 998 posts I thought u must have a little 2 much time on ur hands. . . either that or ur ann robinson! I would like to call a truce, as long as u keep the positive comments!!!! & I believe you will, they don't seem the sort of people to let the standards slip. I just think there aren't enough places that care about service in Hertford & 2 C somewhere new trying to provide a service & getting slammed 4 minor details is a little disheartening, thats all. . . P.s I am a forum virgin - I don't even have broadband. mx mx

Apology accepted. No, I do not have too much time on my hands, I am a rare example of a Male that can multi task (and very opinionated![:)]) TBH I thought my comment re the smokers was constructive, as a cold bar can often loose custom. I do like the place, but have not had the chance to sample it fully, as I do not get out that much with the missus at the moment as we have a 8 month old and I dont think its really the right sort of place for my rowdy mates!!!!!

After my "not bad" first experience, I took 4 friends their on Saturday Night. 1. I booked on Firday, they told me they had no booking. So we got crammed on a small table. 2. It took 35 mins for the only waitress to offer as a drink. 3. 2 of us wanted steak. Sold out. 4. It took us another 20 mins to get our second drink. 5. By the third drink, we gave up on the waitress and stated ordering from the bar ourselves. When she did return with our main course, it was luke warm at best. 6. The "Chicken, bacon and cheese sandwich" was a Chicken burger. 7. My friend had the Chicken Escalope with "Sauted potatos". What she got was black, and I mean black, discs of ash. Obviously re-fried many times. 8. It took 35 minutes to get the bill. 9. At £30 a head, it was daylight robbery. 10. Avoid!

Oh, and by the way, I hadn't even mentioned the fact that they have allowed the music level to creep up (aka Baroosh) and the that we had to put up with a table full of chav girls next to us who thought it was fun to take a napkin, wipe it in a "girl area" and then laugh as they tried to thrust the napkin in each others faces.

Mmm, sounds like the Snug will be relegated to mid-week sessions for us then, as is Baroosh. <sigh> Is there *anywhere* in town that maintains decent volume, food, service and sofas on a weekend night?

Dude, very upset to hear your feedback as we try to rectify any issues there may be on the night in question. However, I do remember this incident and can only appologise for not being able to get to you before you left. The night in question took us by surprise as we were so busy and this lead to the listed issues. We really value yours (and everyone else's) feedback and as you can see by the speed of our reply genuinely want to make amends. If you would be good enough to contact me it would be great to have the oppurtunity to prevent this from happening again and to invite you back as our guest. Since starting off in Hertford, we have been monitoring and taking note of all types of feedback, for example: we now have a cask ale and our beer mix is soon to change. The patio area is being refurbed and a new door is on order to prevent people getting cold. I hope that we use this current piece of feedback to improve the bar and keep offering something for everyone.

Who are you Jeremy Beadle? The glass fits fine in my hands, or ask for a half, or for it in a normal glass. Common? Only the Barge sells it on tap in the Hertford’s town centre I believe. K-Blanc sold is sold at the Stone House. Although both beers are owned by ubiquitous brewing companies. Plus, I like what I like, rather than judge a beer by its scarcity to find. But for uncommon I recently went to the US and tried a Portland white beer called Allagash, yum.

Given I am a serial eater-outer I will one day try the Hillside as it seems to generate a whole raft of discussion here, and its stock of ‘dooden’ will help oil that decision’s cogs. But I live in the centre of town and prefer a pub environment and don’t consider (although never been) the Hillside a viable town centre drinking establishment for a night on the beers. Anyway we digress from the forum topic of the Snug. So, Snug Manager – is there any chance feedback here could affect your beer mix?

Has anyone heard of, or tried, Artois Bock? We stock it in our Cambridge bar and I must say it goes down a treat. Fairly strong at 6.6%, served by the half, it is full flavoured, rich and warming. We'll be losing the Fosters and bringing in premium brands such as Staropramen (Prague's finest) and Leffe. We had an issue with our real ale but this has now been rectified and are pleased to say that we are stocking local organic beers such as Red Squirrel. I hope this meets with everyones feedback and we look forward to actioning any other comments you may have.

I could be wrong but I think the intonation was that a few brand new members have signed up and solely seem to want to say how good a certain establishment is. The anonymity of people could be used to skew the reviews of an establishment.

Sorry Avarice but I think you might be talking in line with animals in a field of the male variety. I have joined in on many topics but I am very critical if I feel a restaurant is poor (see my post on Paddyfields)and if one if excellent (Waterside) I feel proud nowadays that we have so many good things to say about Hertford. Please do not be so patronising.

Reply ID 15462

My post was referring to the intonation of another member’s (Frenchie’s) – in that he (maybe) was inferring a few new members (maybe) had appeared (maybe) to post stuff about the Snug as they are in fact in someway biased. I could have totally misread Frenchie’s meaning. But that’s how I perceived it. My personal opinion is leaning towards this could possibly be the case. You, Wrapper, would not be one of the people I would address this to as I belive you to be 'genuine'. There was post from someone claiming to be related to the manager and saying the Cambridge one was great. This post was locked as they started a new topic to post this under (and hopefully locked because of their awful grammar/spelling and text speak [OMG, LOL]).

This one's for the Snug manager.I had a bottle of Blenheim Point sauvignon blanc last night in the Snug. It cost me £22.50. I know that this wine costs £7.50 in the shops. Is it a standard thing to triple the retail price of a wine when selling it in the pub? The wine is very good but I don't think I'll be buying it again at that price. The Salisbury used to sell Jackson Estate sav blanc at £14.00 which only had a £5 mark up!

Hi Gary thanks for popping in to experience The Snug. To give you some feed back on your question: To the best of our knowledge, our independent supplier makes it a point that our wines are not available in the shops (bar the Grande Marque Champagnes) - the main reason why we buy from him so I'm a little dissappointed to hear that you have found this on the high street. Our supplier imports the wines himself which therefore costs us a little more. Plus a shop has alot less overheads, which we hope you can appreciate. The wine in question, Bleinheim Point Sauvignon Blanc, is an award winning one and is one of my favourites and I'm glad to hear that you liked it.

so people can't whinge about paying loads for the same wine they can get in Tesco's for a few quid. If you don't lik epaying more for it, don't drink it. It's that simple. How do you expect these places to stay open if they don't put a mark-up on products? Tesco's etc has a hell of a lot more buying power than a small bar chain. Economies of scale and all that. I went there with my good lady on Saturday for lunch and sampled their burgers. Excellent. Very friendly staff too.

I went there with some friends for a few beers and food on Saturday afternoon. The food was nice, and the service was good too. The place was busy with a nice chilled atmosphere. I believe a TV crew came in too I think? On a churlish note - I still think some of the décor is slightly changing rooms-esque and the menus with pictures of the some of the dishes is a tad Costa Blanca. But that’s certainly not enough to not go again or not to recommend it to someone. On the cost, if you think something is too expensive you have choices - either don’t buy it again (or at all) or if you think you can get it cheaper elsewhere then go there instead.

Came here for the first time Saturday night with Frau F. Not sure about the decor I have to say and the menus reminded me of a wimpy bar circa 1975. Service very good. They messed up making Frau F.'s cocktail, took her advice on how to do it properly, and came back five mins later with a new one that was excellent. Anybody had the brunch there?

Hello all, Once again, thank you for choosing to expereince The Snug. Hope you all passed the time well over the weekend. Looks like The Snug has some more questions which need to be answerd, we hope to share the answers with you and again always greatful for your feedback - We hear alot of comments of our DECOR looking home made - changing rooms style esque ! - the reason why this is so, is because it is true ! 'The Snug', including management, new staff and help from a small contract firm, stripped the old place clean, designed the bar with all its furniture and fittings along with colour schemes, but left the old structure of the building of brick and wood for its charcter. We are a very small independent company so initially money was directed towards on what we feel are the essential needs to open a 'Snug',leaving luxuries til later. The same fact rings true for the menus. We print all the menus ourselves on site. The reason is at The Snug we like to change and adapt the menu, according to the seasons or guest feedback, hence look out for changes on the beer page in the coming weeks ! We have some questions of our own: what is a WiFi hotspot ? and what are your thoughts on opening late til 12 midnight on a Thursday ? Last of all, to clear up some confusions that we sense you may not know ?! What is The Snug - A Pub?, A bar?, A cocktail lounge?, A coffee shop? A restraunt? A take away? ... the Answer is .... we let you choose, as we have 'something for everyone' ! Until next time ... thank you.

Thursday til midnight is good for me! How about 2am on a friday & Saturday too? Oh, and a WiFi hotspot is a place having wireless internet access for use by anyone with a laptop (or people living on the same street with their desktop PC's if you don't secure it!). You would simply get broadband access and installa wireless router. Some of the bigger Wireless companies wouild probably install everything for you, maintain it and offer you a percentage of revenues in return.

Reply ID 15553

In the USA Wi-Fi is very much free at Starbucks and McD's. They assume if you have work to do and will use your laptop and their free internet connection whilst eating/drinking their (not free) products. Indeed, the main shopping street in Boston is entirely Wi-Fi enabled (for free) and you can browse the internet, check retailer’s sites, find information and get emails throughout the shopping experience (this obviously works better with a Palm device rather than lugging an open laptop around in the middle of a street). In the UK it is still unusual for it to be free; you normally buy vouchers with a limited amount of ‘airtime’ and a voucher/password to access the internet from that area. I’ve heard tell that “Thursdays are the new Fridays” and I think a later license would work for the Snug in Hertford.

Just a short note to thank you all for this week's comments. As a result of some of the feedback, I can now tell you that we have installed Wi-Fi networking at the bar. I believe that this makes us the first bar in Hertford to offer this service and for the time being, so long as you are buying food and drink from the Snug, there will be no charge. Come on in and speak to one of us and we will give you the daily password. As some of you know, we open every day at 10am and serve Brunch. We do allow children into the bar, but ask that parents ensure they are well looked after. Our New beers will arrive on the 10th February and next week I will give you more details on these. On Tuesday 31st we are trialing live music. The band are called "The Trees" and they will be playing an accoustic set during the evening. Their music will be of a similar tempo to the background music we play regularly. By the way, did you realise our music system runs off an iTunes package, so when you pop in next, let us know what you would like to hear playing ! The culture of our business is that we have "Something for everyone" so keep your feedback coming. Have a great week, and don't forget to introduce yourselves to us when you're next in.

Excellent pub for the non smoker. Or should I say wine/cocktail bar as thats more the style. Went there on a Friday and a nice crowd were there, slightly younger than the Baroosh crowd but thats not a bad thing as it seems over 45s in there some nights. This is definately a similar venue but more relaxed and less of a cattlemarket if you know what i mean

Thanks once again for all your nice comments guys. We are currently making a few tweaks to our menu and I'm glad to say that our "pretty damn good" breakfasts are about to get bigger and better! I've tried the Artois Bock and it's not to my taste, probably because I like proper Belgian beer (eg Chouffe, Orval, Cantillon etc) a bit too much to like anything from InBev. I have enjoyed 2 real ales from Crouch Vale that you've had on though. Keep up the good work.

Popped in for Brunch with Little-P Food, Service and Atmosphere were great - Little-P had fun sucking the leather sofa in the window - and made short work of an american pancake. It was a bit early for Artois Bock though.

I've haven't tried them yet but, in the new menus (maybe old as well), it says something like "Have you ever noticed how hard it is to get fish & chips in the centre of _Cambridge_?" :)

I think, can't be sure that the Cambridge bit is a reference to when they first had the idea in their Cambridge Bar.

We went in last night (Saturday) for the first time and I was really very impressed. Very comfy cozy type atmosphere, no louts to be seen, no underage yobs shoving etc. Bar staff - friendliest I have ever encountered, very customer orientated - even with a girl that had been 'abandoned' by her friends and was plastered, they made sure she was ok. Basically really enjoyed the couple of drinks we had - love the look of the menu, a bit different to the norm and they will make you things not on there also (cocktail wise) Wasn't rammed (this was 11ish) but seats all taken. I'm unable to try it, unfortunately, because of the smoking thing. Even if I stop for the night, I'd be limiting my social circle to non-smokers only. I'd no more do that than refuse to socialise with drinkers and join a temperance society. Maybe we should open a pub for non-smoking, non-drinking people. Nice and safe and no chance of causing offence, eh? None of those rowdy crowds waking us with loud and unruly behaviour or crashing their car at 2a.m., because they've had one too many fags.

There isn't really an answer to that. The traditional pub, available to all, is just one more thing which single interest groups will have successfully removed from society for good. It'll be alcohol next. There are, after all, more secondary deaths from alcohol consumption than smoking and no need to leave out the vital "control" figures to massage the statistics to prove what, in the case of smoking, turned out to be an incorrect, but understandable, assumption.

Yes, it was a great shame when "single interest groups" managed to outlaw the practice of sending small boys up chimneys. Whatever next? Furthermore, how do you justify the statement regarding statistics re smoking turned out to be incorrect?

Oh dear, I started something now. Bear with me. Smoking kills smokers, that is unarguable. The European policy on secondary smoking was based on the assumption that because some other people died of deseases which are normally associated with smoking and had been exposed to smokers, that was the cause of those deaths. They did not take into account those who died having never been exposed. Research was commissioned over a longer period to deternmine to what extent, retrospectively. The findings were that the incidence of such conditions in persons who lived in a smoke free household was as high as in those constantly exposed to secondary smoking. Furthermore, the incidence of cot-death in non-smoking houses is as relative to social classification, as it is to smoking. Of course this could all be bollocks too, but certainly there is more evidence to ban drinking, than smoking, but less support. If you shout at a spider, it runs away. if you pull all it's legs off, it doesn't. Statistically one could assume a spider hears through it's legs.

I agree. A well versed response. Quoting an anonymous report which is out of touch with the majority of findings regarding secondary smoking.

Reply ID 24811

05/09/2006 by shunt

Absolutely my point. It is an ambiguity being acted upon as if it were a certainty, whereas secondary deaths from drink are a certainty being treated as acceptable. The report on which policy is based was retracted by the same team who originally suggested the link, so it is not anonymous. By that time, legislation was ten years in the making, public opinion was set and the powers that be just kept going and stuck to the original "maybe". Maybe secondary smoking will eventually be found to be harmful, but it hasn't been yet and is not associated with road deaths, violence and civil disorder. Anyway, I'm sure the Snug is great and I applaud it's smoke free policy, which until next year, leaves some last moments of personal freedom for the rest of us, who either smoke or don't object to it, elsewhere. I didn't intend this to get so political!

Sorry Shunt, but those causing death from secondry drinking tend to get prosecuted. Hense the reason that the majority of people that drink do not drive and do not get in to fights ect. Can you honestly say that the majority of peoples smoke does not get inhaled by others in pubs?

Reply ID 24856

06/09/2006 by shunt

The majority is inhaled by the smoker, not others. The, mainly particular, residue which is left is not proven to be harmful in the quantity available even in the smokiest bar, but assumed to be. There is a responsibility to minimise annoyance for non smokers, if only for reasons of manners and because some don't like it. I'm all for non-smoking venues, would never smoke in a non-smokers car or house, because they have made that personal choice and have a right to it. If there is a demand for non-smoking venues, the market will produce them without legislation. When I think of most of the groups of friends I know, some are smokers and some are not in every group. Smoking to a smoker, is as much an essential of the pub experience as a beer with a bag of nuts is to others. If you don't like drinking culture, don't go to a place where alcohol is served. Likewise, if you don't like smoking, avoid places where smoking is allowed. The landlord can make the call in his own premises, as the owners of the Snug have and smokers can choose to stay away if that ruins the experience for them, leaving a smoke free zone for those to whom it matters. I actually support measures which discourage starting to smokeor encourage giving up, because it does kill smokers, but basing legislation on scare-mongering and the unproven accusation of collective manslaughter is nothing, but sinister.

Reply ID 24858

06/09/2006 by Victor Meldrew

Granted that passive smoking may not be as harmful as initially thought (this week anyway) However the crux of the matter is that smokers are now in the minority and smoking is considered anti-social. Nanny state? maybe, but theres always outside.

Reply ID 24860

06/09/2006 by shunt

The majority are non-smokers, but if you add smokers to non-smokers who would not shun or lose their smoking friends to make a stand, I would guess that would be the true majority. The "smoking" pubs of Hertford are not devoid of non-smokers, but a filled with a mix of people who vote with their feet. Much of the "anti-social" label attached to smoking is due to a belief placed by unproven, but emotive propaganda, though some was always about the aroma which some people find objectionable. The smell of sea food turns my stomach, but I wouldn't ban it unless someone convinced me it was harming the population who didn't eat it. Scaring the population is a very good way of gaining support for single interests and many floaters, who previously were comfortable with the status quo, have been swayed. Anyway, from what I have heard, the Snug is excellent. It is obviously wanted as an oasis for those who object to smoking, as proven by it's popularity. Enjoy, as I will enjoy elsewhere until one group's wishes become imposed on the rest of us. I'm not on a soap box, just aware that (social) life as we know it is about to undergo a major change, for an invalid reason, rather than all those reasons which do hold up to scrutiny. One day, perhaps nobody will smoke. Though it's evidenced as a pastime back to the dawn of fire and as old as fermenting alcoholic drinks, so are many things which man's health could do without.

Love The Snug, nice relaxed atmos, good beer and pretty good food, and as a none smoker it's nice to wake up in the morning with my hair and clothes not stinking of smoke... With regards to this side issue of smoking, I am a little torn because as a non-smoker I can't wait for the ban, however I can understand that, from a smokers point of view, people should be free to make their own decisions on what to do and where to do it (within reason of course[;)]). However I do think restaurants should be non smoking, no question! Sorry smokers...

This is an intersting comment because I have several mates who are trying to give up siting the ban as their main reason. So does that class it as a measure to encourage giving up?? ps. I'm not sure smoking and sea food is the best comparison for your argument...

Reply ID 24864

06/09/2006 by shunt

Exactly. Encouraging people to give up is a valid reason, but one which would not have whipped up a sufficient frenzy to support the loss of public liberty on it's own. Why not sea food? Because there is a conservation issue with the imminent extinction of cold water prawns? That it doesn't have any evidence of physical harm to third parties who don't eat it, was my reason for picking it.

Because not all pubs and bars sell seafood. The fact is that weather you think its right or wrong, its going to happen, just like it happened in the States, Ireland and Scotland.

Reply ID 24874

06/09/2006 by shunt

Not all venues allow smoking, but if you want seafood, you can go to a place that does have it, because demand in catering ensures that such outlets exist in the majority. If the demand for smoking bars was as low as anti-smokers make out and the majority strongly against, there would be few of them and legislation would be unecessary. As it is, the Snug and the Hillside are virtually alone, but busy and highly rated. That indicates the true level of demand admirably as being present , but not universal. In California, smoking has been banned for years in public. On a trip to Pasedena, I noted that the only specially licensed smoking bar, complete with red health warning signs, was packed with smokers and non-smokers alike, whereas the others were largely empty by comparison. True, the air was free of the familiar waft of smoke, but they had taken on a clinical feel and no longer felt like a pub. Yes, it's going to happen, it may be good for the nation's health, it is however a loss in other ways, just as banning alcohol would be. If you enjoy a social drink, imagine how you would feel if you were told it was banned except at home and made to feel like leper or murderer if you even questioned the decision.

What a good idea!? If a strong view on a subject is given, a similarly strong, opposing view is likely. I don't ask you to agree. I do agree with admin that the heat of that resulting discussion has led it off-topic. My original point was that the Snug appeals only to one section of the community however large or small that group might be and apparently does it very well. I was not critisising it, but expressing personal regret that it is difficult for me to enjoy it at present because the crowd I mix with are a combination of smokers and non-smokers and prefer to frequent less specialist venues. I will be giving it a try, as a temporary non-smoker for the night. Hopefully, I will meet some of the good people with whom I have discussed this topic here and we will talk of other things as I learn to enjoy a pub with no smokers, which to me and even some of my non-smoking friends, is like a pub with no beer. As was so rightly pointed out, if I want to still use pubs, I will shortly have to comply or be socially isolated and the Snug will not then have it's specialist niche. Certainly the clientelle of the Snug have expressed a preference by being there and I would not intrude on their rights by introducing smoke, even if doing so would not result in my ejection.

Getting back to The Snug, I find it's a great place for a breakfast/brunch on a Saturday or Sunday morning, particularly since I know that I'm going to enjoy my food without having to choke on the smoke or come out stinking of cigarettes. If you want the smoke filled bar/food option, Baroosh and No.11 can probably fulfill that requirement. I used to smoke and understand the fag-drink combo but have never understood how a cigarette improves the enjoyment of a meal.

Agreed. Eating and smoking at the same time is both difficult and not enjoyable. Therefore breakfast at the Snug appeals to me too. In most retaurants one can always smoke before, after or, if really desperate, between courses by nipping outside to do so. I'm all for non-smoking eateries as smoking is not so much part of the experience, but can be a very negative one for non-smokers. Also, the Snug as a non-smoking pub is a valuable addition to choice and diversity.

Against my better judgement, I popped in for a nightcap with 2 mates tonight. I spent 10 minutes waiting for the one guy behind the bar to serve me, and just as he was about to, another guy appears to help out. He takes my order, 2 pints of Staropramen and a JD with coke. He starts trying to do a very bad impression of Tom Cruise in "Cocktail". The pints are poured, but the short is taking forever. Up down, left right, spin spin spin. HE thinks he is looking cool, he is just looking like a dated twat. Eventually, a glass with 90% ice hits the bar in front of me. A dash of whiskey drips on the ice and the guy says "£10.15". I say "how about you spin some coke in the glass like I asked, and while you are there, try dropping the price to a human level"? Needless to say, he did nothing.

To add some balance to Dude's comments - I've always found the service attentive and efficient in there. Regarding the ale: they do have a guest ale on, which is usually pretty decent. Not sure about Guinness (I wouldn't have noticed if they did).

You won't find Staropramen under £3 a pint anywhere in the SE of England and a JD & coke is an expensive drink so was £10.15 really so unreasonable for that round? I had an epiphany about prices with the Old Vicarage Tea Rooms - I personally avoid rip-off prices, but I now realise that if people want to pay top dollar, that's up to them, businesses do not have a duty to provide good value. My younger, single friends who go out on the pull in Hertford are grateful for places where the drinks are a bit more expensive - they figure that the sort of blokes who gripe about the price of a round are not the sort of blokes they want to pull! [:D][;)] Shallow, yes, but they're entitled to their view and luckily there is such a wide choice of places to drink in Hertford that everyone can find somewhere that suits them. [:)]

Nice to know that us fellas who gripe about the price of a beer will never end up with any of your 'high maintenance me-me bleed machine' mates. Thanks for the warning Rachel. The Snug is now a no-go area for normality, I'll add that to my list of pretentious places to avoid.

What happens when it's your turn to buy a round, Rachel, or you just rely on being paid for being female? I agree that bars aren't obliged to offer cheap drinks. You seem to expect men to supply free drinks though. What do you and your mates offer in return, or do you only date the kind of desperate bloke who has to pay just to have the company of any female? I'd say you are missing the best by that policy. The question you might ask yourselves is, do want to be property or wanted?

*Sigh* Guys, if you're going to go off into a personalised, off-topic, pompous tirade, at least read properly the post you are replying to. Or ask someone to explain to you what the word 'they' means and how it is not the same as the word 'we', which I might have used if I included myself. [:)] The people who read this forum and know me will be having a chuckle at the thought of me out on the pull in a pricey bar! Although I have still got some white stilletos somewhere... Good point Rachel. Kinda forgot the smileys myself. I'm all in favour of some cheap and some expensive venues myself and I'm certainly not one to moan about the price of a pint. I do find great humour in the way equality isn't translated beyond equal pay to equal paying. [:D]

Actually the Snug seems cheap, having spent my Saturday night in a venue where a single VAT was £9.50 and a cocktail £28.00. It's all about value. If you provide a chair and a table to drink at and no more, then a relatively low price seems expensive. The more you add to the experience, the more likely people will be prepared to pay for it and the more you'll have to charge to cover overheads. The Snug seems busy, so maybe they have got it about right. It isn't ever going to please all the people, all the time.

I love this place and I'm normally in there every time i'm out in Hertford. However, I went in recently when my Dad was working in the area and ordered a pint of Staropramen and a lager shandy and it came to £6.40 which to me, is excessively priced. Now, it seems to me as if people who are designated drivers are getting steadily ripped-off, as everyone knows that it costs licensees negligeable amounts to purchase soft drinks, yet it's becoming common practice to charge the same, if not more, for a pint of lemonade when compared to a pint of lager. You get penalised enough by having to water down a fine-tasting lager with some soda water & sugary syrup without getting fleeced when paying for it. Come on guys, sort it out!

Fair comment! We raised our beer prices earlier this year when our prices in were increased. Admittedly, £3.20 was steep for Staropramen. After chats with the brewery, and on obtaining our third site, they helped us out a little bit so we could put our prices back in line with the competition.

Snug Manager. I think The Fair may have been saying that £1.60 for a half pint of lemonade was too high a price to pay. Any comments on this?

Hello all. We would like to respond and give some feedback to your comments on the prices of our soft drinks. The prices for all our cold soft drinks all cost £1.85. Soda drinks on the other hand e.g. pepsi, lemonade include the option to have FREE re-fills with no limits as to how many free re-fills you consume, whether day or night. Thus a designated driver can consume soda drinks all night at the Snug for a cost of £1.85. Plus we never charge for any cordials with any mixer e.g. lemonade and lime or lager and lime. A mixture of a juice and a soda will also cost £1.85 with no free re-fill. Thank you again for your comments.

Many thanks for your comments Snug Manager. I have no problem with the price of a pint of Staropramen, just the fact that it appeared to cost the same amount for half a pint of it, watered down with lemonade (and no refil). However, as I wouldnt drink Shandy anyway and my Dad wont be back in the area, not a problem. I still think you have one of, if not the best bar in Hertford, so keep up the good work!

Note to person dropping off his friends from the car at The Snug tonight at around 7.30 pm The bit beside the window on the Marquee side is a DOORWAY - this is where people walk in and out of the bar from. Customers do not expect to have to step back inside because you want to pull up onto the pavement as they are trying to exit!

Thank you very much - good to hear the feedback on the beer as I'm moving over to St Albans soon to open Snug 3. With St Albans being the home of CAMRA, we really need to get it right and I'm glad that we appear to be doing so. With regards to the parking/dropping off comment: is it the norm in Hertford to do that?!? I nearly got run over last week by someone doing just that outside Elberts then again outside the Marquee last night!!

Had a very nice "sunday lunch" yesterday.........3 beef and guiness casseroles and a burger, very hot and well presented. Lovely non smoking atmosphere and excellant service. Only real grip was the casserole was more of a thick soup and was (in my opinion) slightly on the expensive side at £7.95. Add a bit of mash and veg and it would have been fine.

Hi.. as a now, almost, regular visitor to The Snug, (which i may point out is awesome - service & house wine are unbeatable)..I would like to share a small but irritating bug-bear: The aroma of the toilet disinfectant seems extremely pungent at times and as a no smoking bar, has no mask like some bars/pubs. I'm not suggesting we introduce smoking, for those who are feeling facetious, simply some fixes. Unfortunately the door to the toilets, unless pulled closed, which invariably it doesn't, stays in the open position and wafts the smell throughout the bar. I may be extremely sensitive to this, but its truly boring having to get up to shut said door every 5 minutes! A less pungent disinfectant, or a door that shuts properly, automatically would be great. I'm really finickity about these things so I do apologise.[:)]

I was in last Friday for a Christmas Party - 20 of us having the Christmas Menu. Loved the Christmas cocktails - the Santa's Tea is fab! BUT I think the starter course was very mean. Advertised as a "sharing platter" it was more like nibbles. I don't call a couple of tiny bites each a sharing platter. However, the food quality was generally good all round, and the service and atmosphere were excellent.

The toilets are a thousand times better than they used to be when it was <insert Irish sounding name here>. The sink and walls had black mould growing on them and my foot went through the floor it was so rotten. Also, they were second only to the gents of the Old Barge in the smell rankings [xx(]

Had the full English a couple of weeks ago and I was particularly underwhelmed. I don't know why the sausages were called Cumberland as they certainly didn't taste like them. Barneys and Rosies cafe's breakfast is much better in my humble opinion.

We have never called our sausages Cumberland! Sometimes we have supply chain issues so we usually go to the market on a Saturday morning so therefore our sausages may be different than normal. All of our brunch items are cooked fresh to order and are usually well taken. We have similar supply issues with our Ale: we used to be allowed to buy a "guest" ale and had good relationships with local suppliers who would deliver at a drop of a hat. Unfortunately we've had that privilege taken away from us and have to choose from the very few that the brewery has to offer. They have launched a new scheme though and we're working on getting it right. Our current ale is London Pride but we'd love to hear which Ales you would prefer to see here.

wrapper- of course you can have your humble opinion, but i cant for the hell of me understand why you think Barneys or Rosies cafe breakfast is much better, can you give details why ? Ive had a full english in all 3 places. I prefer the Snug mainly because 1st, its non smoking, and 2nd i got 2 sausages,2 bacon, scramble egg, mushrooms,2 hash browns,a fresh tomato sprinkled in oregano, black pudding (not keen on the black pud but i swapped it for an extra sausage)and 2 slices of toast ah ... and beans. ..... whats so underwhelming about that ?? very detailed i know, i had one this morning, which is why im surprised to read your post ..... plus no Cumberland sausage advertised anywhere...... happy friday 13th

I wasn't being arrogant Wrapper, you were the one who stated that they weren't Cumberland. I reckon that if you owned a pub, you might feel a little bit peed off if a customer had slated the brand of sausage, even though it hadn't been advertised as such as you said, yourself, above. Quote Wrapper: "I don't know why the sausages were called Cumberland as they certainly didn't taste like them" Now that is an advert.

ok ... cool .. ! i don't know ... not sure that smoke does change the taste of a sausage. i just don't like smoky places, but that's another topic i guess. Although i was in a high st coffee shop the other day (starbucks it may have been) and there were signs saying ' please do not smoke, in order to protect the taste of our coffee' (not exactly those words but something to that affect) ..... so maybe smoke does change the taste of a sausage ??? im not saying it does before i check that fact out ... would'nt want to assume anything.

James, my parents ran a pub in Hertford for 17 years so I feel that I have some experience of the pub game. Your post is arrogant because it basically states that my custom is not worth having anyway. You don't know me! I have the right to complain. I am merely stating that the breakfast at the Snug is not as tasty or good value as Rosie's or Barney's. Sorry Lifestyle, point taken about smoking.

I didn't complain because I did not think it was that bad to complain about. I am merely saying that you should not serve something that is not what it is and the breakfasts elsewhere are superior and better value. The whole point of this forum is to post good and bad reviews and then people can make up their own minds. Just because you don't agree with me, it does not mean I should not go back or to have my opinion.

In Tesco and Co-Op, the Cumberlands list spices as an ingredient before herbs, and the Lincolnshires list herbs before spices. On the ordinary sausages, both herbs and spices are quite a way down the list, so probably not as much of either ingredient. So, was said sausage more herby than spicy, or not much trace of either?

In Wrapper's post he was told (it was advertised) as Cumberland which he threw his dummy at. That's fine by me. If, as Wrapper said, "it was indicated as such" a Cumberland through spoken word (classed as 'word of mouth' which is an advert through recommendation/suggestion and the most powerful advertising tool ever, especially here) then Wrapper has voted with his feet and has stated that he won't eat the Snug brekkie again.
