So which councillor comes to Hertford southbound on the A10 and doesn't like waiting?! Total overkill. They should sort out the wrong use of lanes before they waste a load of tax payers money....again!

TRhat's another part of my 30 mile journey fouled up for 12 weeks. 3hrs commuting? Maybe I should quit work now... <sigh>

get the train from Hertford East - even that's quicker than 3 hours (most of the time)

Seriously considering it. It'll cost more than my monthly petrol, but at least I'll be able to read, sleep & arrive at work in a good(ish) mood...[:)]

or you could always use the normally reliable service from Hertford North? Even working in Docklands, it still only takes about an hour. I work in Lewisham (aka Hell) and it only takes me 1hr10mins door-to-door

I bet they don't sort out the access problems to McDonalds & BP while the road is up. That would be too logical.

How do you manage that? takes me 1hr 10 to get to Canary Wharf (walk from Moorgate to Bank, then DLR)

I only get the fast trains from Hertford N to Moorgate (0720 is fastest I think), switch to the Northern Line to London Bridge then good old South Eastern trains to Lewisham. When I'm working in Canary Wharf, I just get the Northern from Moorgate to Bank and switch to the DLR. It's about the same time if you get teh jubilee from London Bridge rather than the DLR anyway

Getting back on topic, is it known whether the Rush Green roundabout is to be closed permanently at any point during the 12 weeks, or will there always be a route to get to the petrol station??

Ahaaa! This is where I come in! This morning I spoke to a nice lady who works within Hertfordshire highways and the answer is: They are "duty bound" to maintain business interests so that you can still fill up on petrol as well as some non-food "food" at MuckDonalds. Works will be carried out one slip road at a time. Said slip road(s) will be totally closed during off peak hours. During peak hours, the slip roads will remain open to highway users. The A414 will remain open with "safety zones" to enable continual works. Diversions will take place along Ware Road. And yes, it really will take 12 weeks...<sigh>

It will probably take about 12 weeks weather permitting. If they could close the roundabout the scheme would take about a third of the time. Once installed you'll then get about 4 weeks of "adjustments" as they try and get the lights to synchronize to match the traffic flow.

I still can't see why Rush Green even needs Traffic Lights. At this rate we will all have Traffic lights at the bottom of our drives by 2010 because pulling out into the road whithout them is dangerous and causes accidents.

It doesn't need traffic lights. Street lights will be a good move, but the traffic light installation smacks of "use up the budget" to me.

Of course it is a waste of money, councillors were threatened by the road planners with the vague possibility that they may be sued if some idiot went and did what they shouldn't and caused an acident. People should take responsibility for their own actions, learn to drive properly and not go cutting up everyone and their dog (who shouldn't be on the roundabout in the first place) just so they can get to their destination a minute or two quicker. It's just another result of the "blame culture" with everyone thinking they can get a fast buck of compensation. (I'll think I will end there before I really get into rant mode about the Thatcher years and greed, damn, damn, damn, I just did.....) [:(!]

I think the roundabout does need traffic lights. If you are trying to get on to the roundabout from the ware direction at any busy period you have a long wait as the huge volume up fast traffic hurtles towards you heading for the southbound sliproad. So what? The trouble is that it is diffult to judge the speed of this traffic and only a slight miscaluclation with the clutch could lead to a fatal accident. We are all in a hurry and we all need as much protection from each other as we can get.

I think the misuse of lanes is more to blame than the volume of traffic. We cannot go right, for ANY reason, in the left hand lane. Yet on this roundabout, everyone seems to ignore the law.

But if you leave the Southbound A10 at Rush Green there are 2 lanes. All viable exits to the roundabout are right so you are saying that nobody should be using the left had lane. Also People joining the A10 Southbound need to pull across from the right hand lane to their exit at some point and once they have passed the Northbound Sliproad their exit is the next one. Many roundabouts no have lane markings that provide a more common sense approach eg. 2 lanes on 2 lanes off on the main road even if the line of the road is slightly to the left or right of straight ahead. Some people are just too stupid to realise that it is perfectly safe and sensible to use both lanes so they will queue up in one lane and moan about people using the other one. A simple "Get in Lane" sign at Rush Green would probably be sufficient to sort out many of the problems

Technically, yes, coming soundbound off the A10, The left lane is for A10 re-access only. Now of course it would be stupid to enforce this, so simple signage to designate different lanes for different exits would be a much cheaper and bigger help. As far as exiting onto the A10 soundbound is concerned, I think this is the issue causing most of the knock on problems on the roundabout. It should be straight forward. Entering the roundabout from the A414, Cars should move from the right lane to the left lane once it has passed the last available turn off (A10 North). The problems arise because too many stupid drivers enter the roundabout in the left lane, only to stay in it all the way wound to the A10 Southbound (Right) exit. This causes three problems. Firstly it creates accidents, which we have seen there many times, particularly on the final corner. Secondly, it creates more hazard and delay for the people trying to exit the A10 southbound. Lastly, it creates delays for people who should genuinely be in the left lane (those exiting at Gallows Hill, BP or A10 North).

If the mess they made of Hatfield Tescos Roundabout is anything to go by, Herts Highways don't appear to go in for lane signs - I am always getting cut up by cars in the wrong lane on that rounabout (coming from the A1 Northbound)

I think the problem with Rush Green is that it's just too big to be treated as a roundabout, it doesn't even seem like one sometimes as you're driving along it. In the past I've even witnessed cars coming out of the petrol station and turning right! I don't think it needs lights - I use it from the A10 southbound exit and rarely have a problem pulling out - sometimes takes a little while at peak times but where doesn't around here? As for Hatfield - the Tesco roundabout really does take the p*ss. You end up with a complete clash of cultures between those who use the roundabout in the legal way (spiralling out by one lane per set of lights) and those who use it in the sensible way (getting in the wrong lane to start with.) Definite recipe for disaster. Every time I drive round it I marvel at the wisdom of whoever designed it [V]

Sorry Dude your not right with this, the Highway Code only states you should use the appropriate lane,: 162: Signals and position, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise. When taking the first exit signal left and approach in the left-hand lane keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave. When taking any intermediate exit select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout, signalling as necessary stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want. When taking the last exit or going full circle signal right and approach in the right-hand lane keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want. When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.

As someone who has only recently passed their driving test (at the ripe old age of 32, but at least I got it 1st time of asking!), I drove around Rush Green for the 1st time last week and I didn't really see any problems with it, apart from the usual lack of markings, cats eyes & signage. I think it could benefit from part-time traffic lights, as all major intersections should have, but if they put full-time signals in, waste of time.

Have to get my two cents in on this one, I use the roundabout at all types of day and night most often at around 10pm. At this time I rarely see more than a trickle of other cars. If these traffic lights are full time it will hold me up maybe 3 or 4 nights a week for no reason at all. If this is the case I shall embark on mission impossible... to have the council change their minds and make them part-time!

No problem! [:)]But I'm afraid you took the section of the highway code out of context. The reason the highway code says "appropriate lane", is it is in reference to a previous diagram in section 160, which shows the "correct procedure at roundabouts". This image clearly show both the access/exit options, and the signalling required. The image clearly shows that there is no option for right turn in the left lane. The advanced driving test also confirms this. You cannot go right in the left lane, unless road markings or highway signage instruct otherwise (unless you are a horse or cyclist).

If the signals are only part time, what do they do the rest of the time? Help Old Ladies across the road? Make videos of them mucking about in the town centre? Sorry admin flippant - off topic comment I still think that Traffic Lights are unnecessary better signage and road markings would be far more appropriate - I guess it is too late now though. Incidentally I am sure there is a sign up on the roundabout saying what the scheme is costing 180000 or something.

It is obvious to anyone that travels to Hertford on the A10 North or South at around 8.00am every morning why they want to put traffic lights on the Rush Green Roundabout. The traffic backs up down both slip roads on to the duel carriage way, in both directions causing a potential accident blackspot. It will affect me, but this one makes sense. Round and round in circles, like a teddy bare, 1 step, 2 steps, traffic lights everywhere!

As with most road improvement schemes, road signs, changes etc, this change was proposed to improve safety at the Rush Green roundabout. The traffic lights have been approved on the grounds that accidents are most frequent in off peak periods and as a result of high approach speeds to the roundabout. The lights do not appear to have been sought or approved on the basis of helping the traffic flow. In Feb 2005, the estimated cost of the scheme was £450,000. (For info, in April 2005 a meeting at Castle Hall approved a skatepark in Hertford with funding approved of £180,000. Unconnected departments but just information.) The conclusion, therefore, would seem to be that these will be full time lights since their primary function is to reduce accidents during off peak times. Easing congestion is quoted as an additional effect of the installation. The link below is where I eventually found the relevant information. http://www.eastherts.gov.uk/democratic_services/archive/2005/committees/Highways%20Partnership%20Joint%20Member%20Panel/070205/Item8.pdf

It surprises me that I have not witnessed one accident during off peak hours at rush green in the past 12 months that I have been using the roundabout on a daily basis out of hours, yet I have seen at least 3 crashes on my days off at more peak times. I would be interested in seeing the figures behind this decision.

Wasnt blameing the traffic lights, but if you honestly think that there are people that do not reduced their speeds on slip roads until the very end you are sadly mistaken. And if you think a sign saying traffic lights will make any difference you will be wrong again. The only real benifit to the lights will be to ease the traffic from the north and south, the council just want to invent another reason to try nd make the cost more plausible.

there was a number of recorded "accidents" at the rush green roundabout. I am aware of at least 3 which resulted in 2 lorries and a bus(on seperate occasions) falling foul to adverse camber on the far side of the roundabout, but i cant see how traffic lights will stop tall vehicles toppling over when they drive too fast.... on congestion, it might ease at some junctions but will increase at others..there will still be the same amount of traffic after all..in fact it will increase due to the time between changing light signals...can't wait...

i think the basic theory is that if you have a junction that carries a large volume of traffic such as hertford road, but where traffic manages to filter out at a reasonable pace, and given that the A10/A414 traffic will get longer periods of green, this could, in theory, cause a problem. I've just envisaged a new rat run through hertford heath! especially at school run times...like i said, cant wait!

I think it is crazy that Hertfordshire Highways can waste money on Traffic lights (not to mention the environmental cost of those extra light bulbs left on 24x7) but they can't fix the road outside Much Hadham -is it the B1004? the one where half the carriageway has fallen down the bank - apparently their last excuse was lack of money. nice to know that Herts CC have their priorities straight.

Come on everyone - get a grip. Yes the traffic lights will regulate the flow - So what? At the very, very worst, that may add a couple of minutes to your daily commute. And if that extra couple of minutes is that awful to contemplate, you really ought to think about a career change. And (yes I'm in an 'and' mood today) people seem to have overlooked the main benefit - the street lighting. The main problem with the Rush Green roundabout was that it was always so bl**dy dark. And Hertfordshire Highways said LET THERE BE LIGHT... [8D]

The trouble is that the lights will not help you get out of the petrol station only off the A10

Reply ID 18518

Not sure about that. The problem with the petrol station isn't the traffic from Gallows Hill but from the feeder roads beforehand. Hopefully the lights at the A414 section will help. Time will tell.

Reply ID 18519

22/04/2006 by hertfordian

I think another potential problem will be that there doesn't seem to be any way of controlling the flow of traffic off the road that runs parallel to the A10. There, people keep assuming that there's a feeder lane directly onto the A414 when of course there isn't - which is what also leads to lots of the accidents which one sees on the roundabout...

Came off the A10 last night and a car went straight through the red light! Know he shouldn't have done it but can understand the frustration as the lights were red and there was no other traffic on the roundabout at all!

What time was this? Hopefully the lights are rush-hour only as sitting at the lights with no traffic around late at night will be a complete pain in the a*se.

Lights were on at lunchtime, but the roundabout was actually busy at that time.

I haven't seen a sign to say they are part-time - and what would they be the rest of the time? Perhaps they become occasional tables when they aren't being part-time traffic lights :-)

So, now that they have eased the passage of traffic from the A10 round Rush Green in the mornings, the lights at the foot of London Road cannot cope with the increased flow, and so even pre 8AM the A414 is tailed almost back alomost a mile from the Fire Station back to Rush Green. Fantastic - bypass that actually bypasses the town, anyone?

Traffic lights were on this morning at 5.45am (today been a bank holiday). I had to wait for a good minute or so at red with no other traffic about. Utterly pointless..

and 11:30 last night, pull off the A10 north, me and another car sit at the red light while no traffic is on the roundabout. These lights do not have motion sensors on them do they?

I have to say I've seen a big improvement on the roundabout recently, though it still can be quite difficult if your wanting to come back on the roundabout after getting petrol at the BP garage. What worries me is the part of the roundabout towards Gallows Hill where you have to pull off to the left, I dont like it personally, some people sit in the wrong lane or pull over really late.
