Michaels is very good, I bought the missus a watch on NYE morning in Brent Cross and had some links taken out while we waited for 10 mins in Michaels all for £3.50. Coles has got to be mentioned! Did Paul Whitehouse ever go in there? "Oooh, Suits you sir!"

Coles is a bit too surreal. I am not sure if they are taking the mick or being genuinely helpful. The husband and wife in Michaels are very helpful and certainly don't keep you waiting long. We had to wait an hour and a half in Newquay over Xmas for a watch to have a link put in. Special mention also for the Dry Cleaners in Evron Place.

I think you're on the right lines here. That's probably why so many people like Hertford. Everyone can probably quote specific instances of poor service somewhere but on the whole, in just about all of the restaurants and shops in the town, everyone provides a pretty decent service. Watch me be shot down now but I know that for everyone who says the service is poor in xyz, someone else will say "I've always had good service there".

Yes!! Caffe Uno. I had booked a table for three, turned up, had our meal, paid and left about 10pm. Got a phone call after midnight on my mobile accusing me of theft and that I was going to get reported to the police for not paying my bill! Seems that the waitress put us on the wrong table of 3 and the other table did do a runner. When I went to see the manager the next day with my receipt, he didn't apologise and said the waitress was totally justified to call me after midnight. Not been back since [:(!]

Been to Cafe Oh No 3 times, never had a good meal or service, so will never return. The majority of restaurants in Hertford offer very good service, but its always nice to have a waitress bow at you, such as in Bann Tittiya or what ever its called.

That is outrageous. Sounds like the`waitress was trying to cover her own back. An apology would have been nice but I would have thought som form of compensation should have been in order.

Come to think of it, service in Caffe Uno has been poor on the few occasions I've been in. In restaurants, good service is usually dependent upon the training provided by the management and their ability to recruit high quality staff. I think the staff in Lussmans , Pizza Express and The Hillside all have the right mixture of attentiveness, manners, banter, knowledge of the menu and ability to serve food without chucking it down my shirt. There are occasional rogues but that happens.

I don’t know the name (Botsfords?), but that hardware shop next to the Black Birds is always very helpful. I have lived in Hertford coming up to 14 months now and my spend there must be coming up to a total of £3 and even though I only every go for some nails or a couple of screws they are always supremely helpful and courteous. Feel guilty I haven’t bought anything more substantial… The service at Lussmans and Bann Thitya is good too – both nice restaurants that are really very reasonable to eat there every week. Pizza Express too. I haven’t eaten at Café Uno. Been to ASK with a large party (8+) and everything went fine there although prefer Express for pizza and Lussmans for their pasta. Worst service was at Café Rouge. Food mediocre. The got a wrong order and made my girlfriend feel like she was the one that should be sorry for not wanting the wrong thing. She did almost take it too until I refused to on her behalf. So they served me my food, I waited and waited. 30 minutes later her food arrived whilst mine had been sat in front of me so we could eat together.

As has been mentioned in a previous thread, Caffe Uno's owners sold the chain on to the owners of the group who recently bought the Chez Gerard and associated restaurants. (This is a Venture Captal/Private Equity led company.) Last year, the owner of Cafe Rouge, was bought by a (different) Private Equity company, not 3 years after Whitbread had sold off the Cafe Rouge, Bella Italia chain to a amangement buy in team, supported by a Private Equity company. Make of that what you want. I don't want to get Admin into trouble by impying or commenting without specific instances. Maybe that's off topic, maybe it's relevant.

Those are pretty big lines you are reading between! I couldn't see that in any post...[?] This is a strange thread by the way - how can anyone compare service in a newsagent with service in a restaurant?

Reply ID 15042

11/01/2006 by Wrapper

I take great offence at my thread being called strange. No, not really. However, I feel that customer service, whether good or bad, is comparative across all retail trades. It does not matter if you are having a watch repaired, buying a meal or getting a pint and a packet of fags. If you are treated with respect and they are courteous to you, you will return. If the product is not satisfactory but they acknowledge this and apologise, then you appreciate this. If you read the thread in its entirity, it is clear that there are certain retail outlets which may not be visited again. Remember the old adage that good manners cost nothing.

I agree - Oddbins. Very helpful chap, I wanted a bottle of Nicolas Feuillatte Rose (sold out) and he spent the time and effort to go through alternatives, rather than just point and say “we stock more here”. His suggestion that I tried was from a house I wouldn’t normally drink from and it was lovely.

It sounds like there was a specific issue which led to the meal being taken off the bill, in which case you can mention it. It's negative "general impressions" that could be regarded as defamation.

Ive only ever had good service in Cafe Rouge. Not a huge fan of Cafe Uno as I like my pasta and I prefer it quality wise in other places (no need to think twice when Lussmans is opposite either) but Cafe Rouge I love. I like the fact you can order something different other that pizza, pasta or Asian food there and Ive had fab service every time Ive gone in there. There is one man/head waiter who is specifically helpful. The wrong dessert was delivered to me on one occasion and he not only brought me the correct dessert imemdiately (even though some preparation was required) but also gave me and my partner a free coffee to say sorry. That sort of gesture ensures my custom.

Some of the establishments that are coming in for stick have to do way more for their money than others, hence it is not comparative. It seems unfair for example, to compare service received in a restaurant where food has to be prepared and served, with service received when buying a nail. You are hardly likely to expect a free coffee if you cannot locate the nail you want. As this is on the "restaurants" forum, why not limit it to restaurants? (Blimey, I am sounding like admin - sorry Wrapper!)

I have been in Cafe Rouge twice Millster and whilst the food is good, the service is average. I took a cake in to them to present to my missus at the end of the meal with candles on the top and all they had to do was light them and bring it over. Instead they gave us all cake plates and asked if anyone had a lighter. Competely ruined the suprise and it wasn't rocket science. I won't rush back.

Spotty Dog as the title of this Forum indicates: 'Best Service in Retail premises in Hertford' this is about any retail premises in Hertford and I would personally hope that when comparing, people would take it on board that what each retail premises is providing is in some cases easier to provide than others. However I think on a general note everyone is just discussing the best service, including the establishment providing the customer with the service promised and in a manner that is pleasing. We're talking about the ones that stand out good and bad - no matter what it was they were providing us with. Obviously its easier for a DIY store to provide nails than it is a restaurant to provide a dish of food but were both provided as the customer expected and did the establishment go that extra mile to please the customer? Wrapper - I wouldnt go back to Cafe Rouge if Id had that service. Its a shame. Ive been in during these times and had the opposite sort of service from the staff that have been on that evening. I just it just depends on who you get.

The names being mentioned as having "worst service" are the ones that have to deliver the complex items which tend to be measured on intangibles (i.e. ambiance etc.). If the watch is repaired by a miserable vendor, you may think about not going again. If the meal is delivered by the worlds best customer service vendor, but is cold, wrong and late, would you go back? So, "customer expectations" are not as simple as service with a smile. Hence I return to my original point - it is unfair to compare the two types of retail premises.

Nope, sorry still dont agree. If I buy a watch and that watch breaks, has a scratch on it or is gift wrapped badly (etc etc) I would think about not going back. If a restaurant serves me food thats bad (cold, not what I ordered etc)I would think about not going back. Equally if a watch shop takes time to explain what watch best suits my needs and is helpful I would consider that good service and would go back. Just like if a restaurant delivers food in a courteous manner and is polite and helpful I would also go back. Its about service, going that extra mile for your customer alongside producing what your establishment sells. Good service comes with any retail shop.

To be fair though this is a thread within the restaurants folder. However, reporting on the services of restaurants in this thread is a little pointless as it should be covered in the individual reviews for each of the aforementioned eateries. Perhaps this thread ought to be moved so it covers services at all retail establishments be they food or not – admin?

With you here Millster. If the food's cold or wrong but the staff replace it quickly, apologise, explain, offer a free, pud, drink, or whatever, then excellent service has saved a potentially ruinous situation. The server gets a tip, I give the restaurant another go, everyone's a winner. Likewise, if a shop replaces my broken widgit without question - not even an implication that I might be trying it on, or be responsible for the damage - that's where I'm going to go next time. (Widgits available from Botsfords at £3.35 a dozen)

This would be true if I had directly compared the 2 establishments as offering similar services and commented “I would rather go to X than Y” Lussamns make nicer pasta than Café Rouge (in my opinion) and has delivered me a better customer service. I would rather go to Lussmans than Café Rouge. They also deliver very similar services to one another. Botsfords was courteous and helpful when I was only purchasing 4 screws. Oddbins made the time to give me an informed opinion and several recommendations across a price range. I don’t think I have swayed any potential meal purchaser to Botsfords on the basis of my observations and consequently it is quite fair to contain statements about differing retail establishments in the same thread. A good service given to me for my £1 of screws is still as welcome as a good service for my £50 meal or a £30 bottle of champagne. This thread was about where you received good service – and who delivers below people’s expectations.

BUT he hasn't been open since, there is no sign on the door (to say that he's gone on hols or something) and the phone rings unanswered before switching to fax. He's still got several bits of my irreplaceable antique jewellery and I'm getting a bit nervous! I have asked some local traders but no-one can shed any light. Rachel, if it's been over a month it may be pragmatic to assume the worst and contact the police with all your information (including photos of the items etc should you have any). He may be long-term ill or he may have done a flit with your jewelry - which I hope is not the case - either way it may be best not to wait any longer. Good luck.

The lights were on and there was someone there around 3pm today, although the shutters were down and the closed sign up.
Rachel - Oro was open today. Owner himself was in the shop and serving.

Yes, thanks for all your replies about ORO design. I was panicking needlessly, I feel very foolish as the guy assures me he TOLD me before Christmas he was going away for a month but I missed that completely [:I] Dozy cow. Sorry for clogging this thread unnecesarily. In the interest of fair reporting, let me add that Oro Design provides a great repair and valuation service, high quality and fairly priced.

And he was open today whilst not normally on a Monday. The gold/sapphire earrings I purchased for my mother's 90th tomorrow are splendid and a very good price to boot.

Agreed! Sent P some flowers on his b'day yesterday and rang her from work. She was really helpful and I was amazed at how beautiful the flowers were for my budget! Wonderfully presented. Didn't blink at the message she had to write either![:I] She's got a really good marketing campaign going on across town; bloody good idea, her arrangments/card in shop windows for all to see. Smart lass, I shall certainly buy from her again.

Oh Yes ! Totally love the dry cleaners in Evron Place ! definately a 10 out of 10!

Albany in Fore Street. Not only did they beat the price for a HDTV but they provided the advice I was looking for and then they delivered it and installed it the very same day. Best service in years!!

I had an excellent service from Albany Radio too. I was given honest advice about the item, and it was delivered with a smile 2 days later. I just wish that I knew they were there when we moved in so I could have bought all of my appliances from them. Instead I went to one of the bigger stores and had late, broken and dented appliances turn up! It was hassle that we didn,t need when we had just moved in and were trying to get straight.

Albany are excellent! Yesterday, I went in there to buy a £1 bulb for a torch and got the same friendly service as I have had when spending rather more! On pricing, they are pretty competitive too....and I don't mean just for torch bulbs!!!

The people who took over the newsagent's in Fore Street, just along from Albany, are always very pleasant. They had a tough act to follow when the previous people retired but have done an excellent job!

We always buy electrical goods from Albany, the service is brilliant, after sales service is also brilliant. I will also mention the shoe menders opposite Waitrose, I went in there once and the sole was coming away from the upper, he mended it, and didn't charge me. He is helpful and does an excellent job.

Albany came up trumps again, being an idiot I could not get the new DVD player I bought my dad for christmas to work, rung Steve (yes I did buy it there) and he talked me through what I needed to do. Can't think you would get that service from a giant on a retail park.!

I'll echo the last 2 posts. Michaels consistantly helpful (& where they could'nt do a repair, gave us a name of an excellent jewellry maker in Stanstead Abbotts - who ended up making the wedding rings for Me & Mrs CP earlier this year!) And Albany. Sell you what you need, not what you think you want... their honesty may have cost them a sale or two, but we'll always go back there now - its called customer focus....... Not sure the Retail Park Merchants have quite got the hang of it.

One of my favourite shops in Hertford is Farrow & Farrow. I went in on the Saturday before Christmas and bought about £15 worth of stuff - not a massive purchase - but the two guys in there were (as always), really friendly and polite. Also, the parmesan I bought was the best I've eaten in a long time. Am really looking forward to it opening up again, I've really been craving some more of it...[;)]

Recently bought a new washing machine from Albany. Great service and advice (how many retailers will deliver at 5pm on a Friday!). Price was the same as John Lewis, Curry's etc.

The delivery is a major asset. They will be there at the time you and they both agree, none of this between 8-12 or 12-5 business causing you to take a lot of time off and sit at home. They are always willing to give good and honest advice, and know what they are talking about. Very rare to get that in the big chains, I know more than some of the staff in the big shops and that is only that you put things in, switch on and take things back out.

The delivery is where the small independents can make the service difference - and they know that. In defence of the major retailers, Albany deliver to a very local area with probably less than half the deliveries in one day that a single van from Comet/Currys etc. make. Would Albany deliver on a Sunday? Totally different operations at the end of the day.

I've never had a bad service experience in Cafe Uno or Cafe Rouge, I've found them very pleasant every time I've been. Something that hasn't been mentioned, the Formula One Autocentre on Ware Road. Family run I believe, my car is a Japanese import and I usually only take it to a specialist but for minor things I'll gladly take it there, super friendly and helpful, and even popped my car keys through my letterbox because I get home from London late.

I needed a new battery for my watch. Went in to F.Hinds (is it on the corner of Bull Plain?) two women standing there behind the counter. I ask if they could replace the battery, even before she saw my watch she said "there's some watches we don't do!". Gave her my watch she took one look and said "No we don't do it". On the that note I remembered this topic and went to Michaels. Two minutes later new battery in my watch and one happy customer!!!!

Glad to see they've changed... a few months ago my other half took his watch in there to have the battery replaced - it needs to be done under highly pressurised atmosphere (or something). They totally messed it up, and he ended up having to send it off to a specialist to be fixed. It's never been the same since.

I agree. With one complicated Japanese import and one enormous American import, Formula 1 has always been prepared to have a go and happy even to fit parts I've sourced elsewhere.

Cafe Rouge and Uno are very pleasant but there is an essential thing in a restaurant - food - and it is very average in there and that is being nice.

Oh no - my cover has been blown! We survive just fine thank you for asking. Hertford is actually quite a thriving retail town, if you have the right thing to sell. Women and their money are easily parted if you are selling quality merchandise, in a friendly environment and at the right price. Don't rip your customers off and they will return!

Why would they limit male customers to just manicures? I know there are certain services offered to female customers that may cross comfort boundary with males..........but I can't see what would be wrong with a facial?
