Went there last night, for the third time ever. It was really nice, there used to be a rather offputting and stern looking waiter that put me off for years, but last night the atmosphere and the food were very good, and reasonable. I particularly liked the peppered squid. I recommend it.... shall certainly be going again[:)]

I find it amazing that a town the size of Hertford can support 2 Chinese restaurants and 3 take-aways. We must be big fans of Oriental cuisine.

This must have improved dramatically cos I went there early last year and it was abysmal. Poor service and coild unappetising food. The Peking House is a country mile above this place for service and food. The Sunlight takeaway is infinitely superior.,

I understand that the Paddyfields has a new Chef. I too used the establishment a couple of time last year and vowed never to return. However, on someones recomendation, I recently had a takeaway from there and yes, it was very nice and around the same price as the Sunlight and The Empire. They have also recently extended seating downstairs and converted upstairs to accomodate more diners. So there you have it.[:D]

Had a takeaway from here last night and it was execellent. Chicken Satay Dumplings Chicken in Chilli Beef and Cashews Singapore noodles egg rice £19.50 and cooked in 10 mins.

Picked up a takeaway from here a few days ago...not overly impressed. Kung Po Chicken (a bit bland) Egg Fried Rice (pretty greasy) Smokey Chicken (chewy) Yes it was cheap but as they say you get what you pay for. Food was generally bland although it was cooked quickly and if I was after a quick cheap chinese I may use again in the future. To be honest though, in my opinion if you are going to the trouble of going out to pick up a nice takeaway to save yourself cooking why not pay that little bit more for a memorable feast. Everywhere I've lived before I've found myself using the slighty more expensive takeaways as I feel they offer superior quality.

Steve: its a bit cramped in there for 20 people.... I suggest taking people to the Peking House. All of these takeaways/restaurants are much better than Wok-U-Like :)

I really like the spring onion and ginger fried noodles at The Paddyfields. Also, has anyone seen the carved carrots that one of the waiters creates? He makes flowers and birds, which is mildly impressive but I've seen that elsewhere. However, I was in there earlier this year waiting for a takeaway and he was sitting in a corner making a detailed Chinese Pagoda... out of a carrot. Of course this isn't a reason to recommend a restaurant, but if you're in there keep your eyes peeled (no pun intended) for the carrot carvings.

We just got back from Paddyfields - excellent, as usual. My wife had the crispy chilli beef which was superb. And no problems at all with service - all very friendly.
