New Library
It's now over two years since McMullens were granted planning permission for a new library. Since then there seems to have been nothing but a deafening silence on the issue. Given that McMullens have now decided to concentrate on their core business, does this mean that the plan is dead. Am I correct in thinking that the planning permission lapses after three years?

I hope it has lapsed. The idea of knocking down the current Library is a DISGRACE. Old Cross is full of history and we dont need another character building destroyed for short term gain.

There was no intention to knock down the old library - it's a listed building I believe. There was going to be a new library in Dolphin Yard behind Maidenhead Street and along the river.

I believe that the site is still protected for the archaeologists. One of the reasons for the withdrawal of the planning application on Folly Island car park site was that no time had been allowed for a similar inspection and about a month after the plans were withdrawn soil samples were taken by the developers on the instructions of the County Archaeologist. A bit late but ... I digress.
None of the plans for a new library have been shelved and a lot of the delay has more to do with Macs sorting out the problems with splitting up their empire to pay off part of the family. I think they now have a clearer idea where they are going, the site survey is almost finished and Hertfordshire Highways are holding back on the plans to 'enhance' Bull Plain until such time as both parties have sorted themselves out.
So, in the end - about as clear as mud.

We as staff are all waiting for a new library! This building is wonderful but not good for access and working in. The staff do a wonderful job don't you think?!
We thought the building would make a really nice upmarket nightclub, called perhaps The Library!
