Hertford's night life.

Is it just me or has the nightlife in Hertford gone down hill over the past 3 to 4 years? It used to be an excellent night out but it seems to have got very dull and same-ish recently with the same old people in the same old bars. Baroosh has turned into an old people’s home with the 40/50+‘s out numbering the youngsters by miles (this could be due to the excessively priced drinks). The White Hart and Blackbirds have turned into youth clubs and the Stoney is only for those who like pay for the pleasure of joining pointless queues. Wetherspoons will be ok for a change (but I will hold back judgement until it is built….if that ever happens) and with Elbert’s moving into the town it will save the cross-country trek, although paying to get into a bar still riles me. Hertford needs some decent new bars to attract new clientele and re-invigorate the place. We (my mates and I) have resorted to going to St.Albans just to get a decent night out. Baahumbug!! PS: It is good to see a few of the Hertford rugby club forum members expanding there horizons into new forums.

What do you consider to be a "decent night out"?

This is very strange as up to now the taxi drivers have reported that many of their customers come from St Albans. And to add to the woes - info is coming back that only one night a week is very busy, Friday or Saturday but not both. Is Hertford losing its edge or is it anything to do with money, the Licensing Act, the venues, PC Rain, PC freeze your whatsits off or that time of year.

Good question. What DOES make a decent night out? All I know is that I use to enjoy going out in Hertford and now I don't as much (for the reasons listed above)... and it's not only me, my friends are of the same option.

It may also be that you no longer find Hertford good to go out in simply because you have been going to the same places in the town. I used to spend most weekends in Hertford but like you began to not enjoy it. I now tend to go to other nearby towns too but that means when I do go out in Hertford i enjoy the night more as it is a change.

Has there been a big change since/because the university pulled out or is that just coincidence?

Variety is the spice of life. (was she the short blonde one or the fat ginger one?) Have to say I agree with Motty on Baroosh (amazing I know) Thats why I now prefer to start somewhere like the Barge and maybe move on via the Snug to eventually No11. A couple of weeks ago I was dragged in to the White Hart, I now know where all of the 15-17 year olds drink in town. Very amusing, lots of carpet carrying chavs!

All valid points. Perhaps I'll adopt the less is more approach. Less outings = more enjoyment. But I still think the town centre needs a good shake up.

Slightly off-topic, but I wonder if this link tells us something about a couple of pubs in the town... http://www.enuffsaid.com/gallery.php

Sure - it says enough if you judge all the clientele of the most popular pubs in town by the small number of aesthetically pleasing "scally" stereotypes you see on that site... Go into most of the pubs in Hertford, and you’ll generally meet people who are there to have a good time with their friends and not cause any trouble to other patrons...most of them are university undergrads/ students/ young professionals, and most just want to have a few drinks and a catch up with their friends. Not all drinkers in the youthful pubs are yobs, scallys, or 'undesirables', and the small number you get in any establishment does not in any way mirror the pub or its other patrons! I’m training to be a solicitor after having completed my Law degree this year, and my other friends are educated professionals and undergrads - I assure you I am not a yob or anyone you would associate with trouble or egregious behaviour - It would be refreshing if you didn’t tar us or our pubs that we’ve drunk in for a number of years, with that rather large brush your wielding! I’m being charitable if I say I think that’s a rather shallow and narrow minded post...

Blimey, you deduced all that from Steve's one line post? Can't wait to see you in action in court!

Well, perhaps Steve would like to expatiate and clarify exactly what he meant by what he put, it is ambiguous at best, and quite offensive to some of the people that I know on that site who happened to be unfortunate enough to get their mugs caught on camera at worst… So - and I’m dying to know this, what exactly do the photos say about the local pubs then, if what Steve put was not meant in a derogatory sense?!!!

Well I thought it said "Here's a lot of quite pleasant young people out having a nice time without particularly bothering anyone"... [:D]

Yep..........Exiled...........perhaps your posts are in the wrong order... Maybe you should have clarified the intent first before leaping to conclusions.

Not at all, I would have thought my intent would have been crystal clear from my first post. It is pretty obvious if you click on the link, that the photos unfortunately have a high chav content,- chains, hoodies, footy hooligan tops etc etc By citing a link, and stating, "perhaps this says something about one or two of the local pubs" -then leaving it at that - it is not giving the whole story of the people that frequent these places, and is putting a very negative spin on what has been for me a very positive experience of Hertford in my 21 years here. If you look carefully, you will see some 'local well known’s' to the law and to people my age - hell I went to school with some of them. Many of these people will be the people you’ll tut about and say what a waste of space they are, pissing their money up the wall on a Friday/ Saturday, and waking everyone up on their way home, or taking up the polices time by scrapping like animals on the war memorial. It is disingenuous of me to say any more so ill let Steve clarify what he meant by his post. A great number of the people who have drunk in those pubs are good people and are out to have a good time, not at the expense of other. However, the morons in a high number of those photos do NOT in itself give a fair reflection IMO of the cross section of customers, and people will no doubt unfortunately draw negative inferences from what they see. But hey - hopefully your all a bit more intelligent than that.

I think you have to take in to consideration the establishments they are taken in and the dates they are taken. For instance, there have not been any pictures taken in Baroosh since 2002, this probably due to the type of patron, likewise there are no pictures taken in No11 although there seems to be many taken in there when it was Sloppy Joes. The majority of the recent content in the Hertford section comes from pubs such as The White Hart, The Blackbirds and the Stone House. That alone should give you an indication of the types of establishments these places are, therefore if you do not like what you see, steer well clear. As said in an earlier post, I was dragged in to the White Hart a couple of Fridays ago and I can confirm that the pictures are indicative of their clientele. I would return, but only for half an hour and a good chuckle at under age Chavs!

When I looked at those photos I just saw lots of young people out having fun just as I did when I was their age. You obviously know some of them and immediately draw upon that knowledge. As I don't know them I have a less biased view. You have assumed Steve has seen the same in the photos as you. This may be the case but the fact is that I haven't and others are probably of the same opinion as me.

I made my opinions from visiing the esatblishments, not from the pictures. My point was that there are not any recent pictures from places such as Baroosh and in fact there are not any pictures from some of the other busier pubs in Hertford, such as The Barge, The Snug and No11. From this I can only deduce that the clientele in those pubs are either very un-photogenic!, or have not swilled enough alcopops to pull mad capped faces for a random photographer, therefore the photographer for the site does not visit them.

Wow e_i_r, you may be training to be a solicitor but you clearly aspire to the judiciary! Not only have you judged me and my remarks without any evidence, but you've clearly made up your mind about many of those pictured on EnuffSaid. In answer to your question, what the pictures tell us is that The Blackbirds and The White Hart cater almost exclusively for a young and energetic clientelle. Motty said as much in his original post, although not perhaps in such diplomatic language. My post was simply supporting his assertion and providing evidence. I happen to know one or two people featured in the photos and they're certainly not scallies or chavs.

I see from The Mercury that The Blackbirds was raided last Friday evening and that no underage drinkers or drugs were found. And if I'm reading between the lines correctly the report also suggests that there may be further raids on other premises in the town.

i heard the same thing about the raids and i'm glad the lads on the front door have done a good job in keeping the under age drinkers and drugs out. i work on the front door of a bar in the town and my college and i run it as tight as we can searching hand bags and checking i.d's as we go.since we have been doing this we have had no more ghb related cases in the establishment for which i am proud to say. i know a lot of doorman get a lot of bad press so it's good to hear that the lads done a good job at the blackbirds[;)]at times it is a very demanding and dangerous job and seeing people having a good safe night out is what it's all about for me job satifaction i think thay call it[:D].
