Great pictures JohnSmith, it's about time these people were taught the difference between a pavement and a road. I understand this concept could be somewhat confusing and possibly require the use of their brain, but I'm sure the mental exercise could benefit them in other aspects of their selfish life. When I decided to start taking the pictures I thought that knowing my luck everyone would start parking impeccably. I now take my camera with me every time I pop around the shops and can guarantee that I will be able to take at least 2 or 3 pictures. The red Fiesta is the one that amazed me. I am sure that the person who owns it lives in the flats in Windsor Drive in the background of the picture. A good 30 second walk!

Good News! HCC will be painting double yellow lines and installing some strategically placed bollards around Fleming Crescent.

Lets hope the bollards help. The other day when my wife was taking the kids to school she was standing on the corner by the chemist waiting to cross into Carlton ave, when the driver of a lorry making a delivery to the chemist yelled at her from his cab telling her to " hurry up and get out of the way", so that he could park on the pavement. She promptly told him exactly what to do (politely, because of the children), but I dont think it will make much difference, but maybe the bollards will.

Can I get a consenus of opinion please. The council recently put up some bollards to stop vehicles mounting the pavement next to the chemist on Sele Farm. Despite complaints to Securitas, they continue to squeeze through the gap and park up in the pavement. Now, it doesn't actually affect me but I can be a right obstinate git and it gets right up my goat to see them do this. The next time it happens, if I were to find someone else who is of the same opinion and we were to stand on the pavement at the front and rear of the van so it can't get off the pavement, does anyone think this reasonable? Or have I got a bit too much time on my hands? I would just love them to call the police and try to explain themselves.

yeah, i live on Sele too and it's a bit of a nightmare walking up and down with a pushchair. i have taken to printing off a few 'polite' words and putting them on windscreens when ever i can't get past!! why should i have to walk in the road when i have my own pavement to use!??!

Driving past the Co-op in Bengeo, I noticed a car that was parked on the pavement outside the working mens' club. There was barely enough room for a person to walk between the car and the wall. There was no way you could have got a pram or wheelchair through the gap. Some old dear was walking through and bashing the side of the car with her walking stick. Top girl!

I wonder where one would stand as regards to the law, if one were to walk straight over the top of the pavement obstructing vehicle ( if you were agile enough) preferably wearing muddy boots! Love to see the look on the owners face when they got back.....probably the same look as the pedestrian when forced to walk into the road because of the thoughtless motorist. :¬0

Regarding the (often) diabolical parking situation at Fleming Crescent, I feel too many of the parking spaces are being used by shopkeepers and shop assistants. This is a great 'turnoff' for would-be customers who simply take a look at a full car park and take their trade elsewhere. Many such customers, including me, are quite elderly and have a bit of difficulty walking any distance, so the car park just along the road in Calton Avenue is not a great option for us. Not so for the young, fit, healthy, husky youngsters manning the shop tills. Come on guys, give us a bit of a break and leave us a few spaces to help us to help you keep your jobs!

Another one for the hall of fame. BSG Property Services L191 UEW. Parked up all 4 wheels on the footpath in Tudor Way next to the Post Office. I went up to the driver and asked him if he could move his van off the footpath as he was causing an obstruction. I asked him what would happen if someone came along pushing a pram or wheelchair. He refused to move and seemed to think that it was okay that these people would have to walk in the road or the dirt. I had the last laugh as I grassed him up to his company. I wonder if EHDC would let me become a traffic warden up here and have a percentage of the profits?

Perhaps we should get a team together to do a sponsored car lift, and lift the cars that park haphazardly around the shopping area into the often empty car park across the road on Calton Ave!

May i advise you of the agreement that you accepted on becoming registered. Have you not heard of the data protection act. I think you will find that displaying peoples vehicle registration numbers over the internet is not acceptable and could cause in the individuals suing you for invasion of privacy. if you lead a sad and boring life as it would appear may i suggest you get a job. I am sure if you choose to wander round the various streets in hertford and hoddesdon then you will find that we all face a similar problem and who is to blame not the car owners but the GOVERNMENT...... I humbly apologise for a) caring about those who are wilfully obstructed by inconsiderate drivers, b) wanting where I live not to be turned into a mudbath and c) having to cough up extra council tax to pay for the installation of bollards, painting of yellow lines and repair of grass verges because some people can't be bothered to park legally. Maybe I am sad and have a boring life but at least I don't put others at risk by parking illegally. No, the people RESPONSIBLE for parking like that are the drivers of those vehicles, no one else. No doubt the driver of the Portland Conservatories van parked up on the footpath in Hutton Close the other week thought "b****cks to the disabled person who lives at the end of the Close, I'm parking my van right up on the footpath, they can go the long way round up Welwyn Road to the shops." Even if we DO face similar problems elsewhere it doesn't make it right does it? "I can't park my car right outside my house, I know what I'll do, I'll park it up on the footpath. F**k the mums with pushchairs, the elderly and the disabled. Just so long as I don't have to walk more than 2 minutes to my car" I'll look into the DPA and if I have to I'll blank out the number plates. Working daily at sele farm carying out esential work for the residents it is at times nessesary to place vehicles in positions which I agree are not ideal.Maybe the likes of John Smith could get a job and move his car during the day it would free up some of the limited parking available.I would also like to say that mr smiths personal coments are unessesary and cause ofence, anyone got any coments on JUNK MAIL or benifit fraud.

A Worker, total and utter rubbish. There is plenty of parking available on Sele Farm. The car park in Calton Avenue is never full. The parking is worst around the shops because people can't be bothered to use the Calton Avenue car park and walk across the road. Nothing but pure laziness. More often than not it is commercial vehicles. Of course, these tradesman don't come from the area and don't give a toss about the locals. Are you trying to justify illegally parking on the footpath? What has benefit fraud and junk mail got to do with inconsiderate drivers obstructing the footpaths? My car does not take up any public parking spaces.

[/quote] Case in point - I saw a builders lorry from Ware parked on the pavement just next to the keep clear about where the red car in your photo was - the driver (who wasn't the most athletic looking chap) came back to his colleague in the passenger seat carrying 3 cups of coffee. I'm sure he could have found a more appropriate parking place as he looked like he needed the exercise too.

Reg numbers are there to identify a car and it's owner. There is also no law about taking pictures on or of public property. If you are standing on the street you have no re-course if you (or your car) happen to be snapped by a camera, webcam or cctv, after all you ARE on public property. If the data protection act applied in regard to Car Reg numbers then why is it illegal to cover or obscure exactly that, infact you are required by law to display your Reg number for the sake of identification. There is no excuse for pavement parking, IT IS ILLEGAL and just because it seems the majority of people do it, does not make it right. melsflame maybe you should consider the rights and needs of others as well as your own. It's people like johnsmith, prepared to speak out and actually do something, who are the one's who get things done and actually change things for the better. It's very easy to sit back and do nothing, but where would the World be if we were all like YOU!

Another important point which I forgot to mention is that the person who takes a photo owns the copyright and therefore can do as they wish with said photo's. Even a Wedding Photographer owns the copyright on his pictures not the Bride and Groom. Invasion of privacy occurs when you point a camera through somebody's bedroom window and take a snap, not when the picture is taken from public property. This info is provided to the best of my Knowledge only, consult a solicitor for the whole truth and nothing but the truth, (just covering my backside). Regards to all.

Excellent work, John. But why don't you contact the companies involved with the commercial vehicles. You could even send them a photo. I know there's a risk of infuriating the culprit if he is confronted with the evidence of his misdemeanour by his manager, and he may possibly come back and deliberately park badly in the future, but I believe it is worth it.

Been on my hols for a couple of weeks and appreciate the support. All I can say is that some people are more willing to shift the RESPONSIBILITY onto anyone but themselves for some pretty poor parking. Can't quite work out how me working / not working / being a sad individual / where I do / don't park my car / the government has anything to do with some people deciding to park their car on the footpath. I've made myself known to some commercial vehicles and think I'll make a nusaince of myself tomorrow. Got nowt to lose. Anyone not happy with what I've done can let me know when I tell them they've parked ILLEGALLy and with no RESPECT to the other locals ;-)
