Have been looking all over for a spice called Ras Al-Hanut for Rick Stein, tangine recipe I wanted to try. Went into Farrow&Farrow, not only did they stock a huge pot of it for a very reasonable £1.99 but Mrs Farrow was able to tell me a bit more about the spice and where it comes from and what it is used for!! Thank You Mrs Farrow.......the tagine was mouth wateringly good!! Using your knowledge of food, could you not type out some recipes using some of the more obscure ingredients you sell to hand out to your customers as leaflets?? or even write a Farrow&Farrow cook book?

Or, and this is where you could clean up - cook the food yourselves and sell it as a heat & serve meal? Alternatively, you could sell all the ingredients required for a meal in a bundle, maybe do a meal of the month or something? My folks are always raving about this deli in York that sells all the ingredients you need for a meal as a bundle and all you do is go home, stick them all together and voila! luxurious meal with zero preparation! As an afterthought, I'd like to trademark my "Meal of the Month" idea, but I'd be willing to let it go for a Stormaway Black Pud and a tasty Chorizo [;)] Oh, and some of that chilli chocolate for the girlfriend.

I have seen this concept at London Railway Stations - buy all the ingredients in a packet to cook the meal. The Shop at Liverpool Street didn't seem to survive very long though

I have to report that Grandma_P (my mother) was very impressed with the Cardamom Rococo Chocolate from Farrow and Farrow. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate it to me. GillP was pleased with her bar too - although she hasn't tasted it yet

quote:Jolly good - it's fantastic stuff. I hope they both had it all to themselves and didn't share any: Mother's perogative! The Rococo is also available in Chilli. Nicky - recipe cards were on the agenda from the beginning, but the time that needs to be put aside to them it quite alot and we're we're working on them (normally when my boss is out of the office...). Glad th tagine worked out - did you try the lemon trick? Fair - Sadly we can't do the "Meal of the Month inna Bag" as we can't supply the meat or veg. Hoever, you may like to put in a TradeMark application incase we do manage to do this in the future (says she eyeing up Pearces old corner shop enviously). We also can't do any cooking at the mo' due to a serious lack of approved kitchen. We're trying to work on this though, but it may take time and some generous, forgiving & patient friends...! Better go and 'phone my mum now or my name be mud in the morning...

Did not try the lemon trick, I was not brave enough after having used them lemons before and it all going horribly wrong......maybe next time. No kitchen?....that has to be my worse nightmare, maybe I should invite you round for dinner and show you how I have been putting all them fantastic ingredients you sell to good use [:D]

Any chance of Farrow and Farrow roasting some coffee on a Saturday? And also selling green coffee beans for home roasting? (in the wok) Paul

quote:Paul, we're too small to have a safe place to roast beans to order on the shop floor, though that is certainly something we can look into if we use one of the top-floor rooms. Discussions will abound when I get home tonight! We are looking into sourcing coffe, but the current debate is whether to go for whole beans, be they green or roasted, or go for ready ground. The debate is based on one principle of providing whole beans (or spices, for that matter) that will last longer in people's cupboards; or ready ground for those that don't want the hassle. Ideally, we want to have both. Bear with us.[:)] We need to investigate the logistics further, but rest assured it is something we want to stock.

As part of a healthy eating, organic plan however, it can't be beaten and no, I'm not veggie! Yum! Will be in again tomorrow for some more![:p][:p][:p]

I would recommend their spices. I bought whole coriander seeds from them, it was beautifully aromatic, I will always try to buy spices from there.

Hello Farrow & Farrow, I just got back from Argentina and after binging for 2 weeks on Dolce De Leche and I am hooked. Do you sell this or can you get it? They sell it in Tesco by a company called Merchant Gormet but too be honest it is nothing as good as the real thing!

We would like to say a big thank you for those of you out there that enabled us to be nominated for the UK TV Food Local Heroes Award 2006. We never expected this to happen; after all, we're only a 10 month old little fish in a competative market. We're also the only deli in Hertfordshire to be nominated, which is fantastic for us. Thank you.

With respect to Coffee roasting and floor space, a trip to Muswell Hill may be in order, there is an old fashioned provisions shop called Martins in Muswell Hill Broadway, whilst their retail area is slightly different in lay out it is about the same in size. They roast two or three times a day and pump the resulting smoke out into the street at knee level. From childhood to now I still am fascinated by their shop window with it's rotating drum with flame, and the smell of coffee smoke filling my nostrils! If there really isn't room for the Farrow's to do something similar in their lovely shop, it could be Martins may be interested in a supply agreement, for their wonderful coffee beans and teas.

quote:Good heavens! I used to live in a flat above that shop!!!! After a while the smell of roasting coffee loses it's appeal [:)] Can't think of anywhere local that roasts coffee, but there are a number of shops that sell the beans loose. Well done to Farrow & Farrow. I really must get over to Hertford to check it out soon!

quote:I can see that being a problem if you live with it all the time. I love the smell of roasting coffee and remember it on most High Streets, but I can also see it causing complaint in this day and age of intolerance. I also like the smell of maltsters, but my ex considered it industrial nuisance, whereas I had to hold my breath to pass the wet fish shop which was in Railway Street! I'm going to visit Farrow and Farrow soon, partly because I'm certain that I know you by your first names and partly because my girlfriend has two boys who I'm teaching to appreciate food which is not complete and ready to microwave when purchased.

quote:Good luck, it can be good fun especially if you get them involved though it's pretty variable (my youngest daughter is turning into quite a chef at 10, while my eldest daughter isn't interested). One thing I found really good with my two girls was making our own beefburgers. Not only is is really easy if you have a food processor but the local butchers will be able to provide the raw materials too. Also they never want to go to places such as McDonalds any more! A real result for us [:)]

I went into Farrow and Farrow last weekend and I must say that what a great place it is. I got some wonderful cheese and bread from there, it didn't last long. The only thing that I must say is that it needs to be bigger, so support is needed to help a extreamly good local shop prosper.
