It is not a Conservative Club although many of its members might sway that way and they do appear to support the blues come election time. It is a private club - membership is about £60 a year. You have to apply and be interviewed by the membership committee. Many on Folly Island are members - not this one. The beers are very limited ie. Macs and one guest beer. They have regular music evenings, local groups often play in the garden until late. Juke Joint are one and they have regular 60's and 70's nights. Always popular. Inside is a little dated, as befits a listed type building. They often have open days and beer festivals when the public can go in and look around as part of the membership drive. They also have a snooker room and meeting rooms - Folly Island AGM use one and we booked a room for a talk by Peter Ruffles on the history of the Island. Will check out membership details etc with Chairman who lives on Island and report back.

how about the bengeo club?? i live just a few doors away, so would be very handy, but looks a bit dodgy...

Are you talking about the Bengeo Working Men's club next to the Co-op? I've been there a few times with the father in law. Probably the friendliest drinking establishment I've ever been in.

I understand that joint membership of Hertford Club - you and significant other - is £65, sole membership £45 plus and annual fee of about £50. Although Chairman willing to be contacted personally will not give details here but just pop in to Club anytime and ask for details.

i heard that females are only allowed in the working mans club once a week, and they were only allowed in one room, and that this room was the kitchen ;-)

I remember many years ago that we had a darts match against the bengeo working mens club. when we arrived with a few of the lads girlfriends in tow, we were told that the girls had to drink in the bar upstairs while we played our match on the ground floor, it was the quietist evening we'd had in ages! (just joking) I don't know what the ruling on women is in there now though? perhaps JohnSmith could enlighten us!

I've not been there for a while but I believe it's still the same - a quiet drink for the blokes downstairs ;-)

Bengeo working mens club have been allowing women in the downstairs bar for about two years now. My darts team play there in the darts league. I dont live in Bengeo but if I did I would apply for membership of this club. Was playing there a couple of weeks ago and along with the standard beers they had two excellent guest ales. Was pleased I was not driving that night.
