I think there used to be a comedy club held there.Could be wrong though.

The Corn Exchange is run by the Town Council who've never quite got to grips with running it. There have been two or three failed ventures into using it as a night club and I beleive they're currently courting opinion on what to do with it. Having said that, it is in a poor state of repair and the Town Council seem unwilling or unable to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

I remember going to an indoor market in Hertford.Was that in the corn exchange? About the same time there was a small shopping alley known as the arcade.Shame it's all gone now,does anyone remember it?

There was an indoor market but possibly where Bircherley Green is now. Depends on how old you are Amber. I went to a meeting at Corn Exchnage a few weeks back and someone asked if the Flea Market was going to be held there again. This was the annual Town Council meeting and the first thing Mr Mayor had to do was to apologise for the state of the place. The most obvious disgrace was the amount of chewing gum screwed into the carpet. Not the ideal venue. I believe the Town Council are still looking into the problems of hiring/renting/buying/leasing etc etc the venue. It was my fall back position if I had to cancel Fun day and put Battle of the Youngs Bands there. I would still have searched for something else. The place needs serious work.

The corn exchange has held nothing for me in recent times. The 'parties' are based around (in my opinion) poor music & i have not heard of any events suited to my tastes. To be perfectly frank, i havent heard of anything at all happening there. Expess yourself!

Baroosh is the trendy bar in Fore Street - a large yellow building opposite Market Street - used to be Barclays Bank.

Disco last night for 11 - 16 year olds was well attended.Daughter and her friends had a great night. Just a thought but couldn't this building be used for a cinema rather than the castle hall?

justin, are you trying to close down every eating establishment in hertford except for the hillside???!! don't get me wrong, I love the hillside, and it's incredibly local to me too, but we all need some variety! It's a shame that the restaurant on the river opposite the barge (can't remember the name) is so crap - the hillside really doesn't have any competition in the quality stakes...

[/quote] haha , knew id ruffle a few feathers sooner or later.... the escape u mean?(ciboulette). never been there. how many times u been to the hillside? cant see that id be able to close down the monster thats baroosh with a tongue n cheek comment about salad leaves!!! what about elberts? hows the food there?

yes i meant ciboulette - shocking place - i walked out of there last summer having waited over an hour after starters for mains to arrive(and we were 1 of only 3 tables of people in there!) the food that we did try was over priced and crap quality. I love the hillside, but bit pricey for regular dining. elburts actually is fantastic - i'd forgotten about that, but is meant to be shutting soon for some strange reason. let's hope baroosh's management aren't reading this website eh justin! at least they're better than cafe rouge - the only reason i'd ever go there is to sit outside in parliament square...

[/quote] i dont think we are pricey at all, i think we offfer excellent value both on food and wine, considering the quality use of ingredients, which dont come cheaply. granted, i understand what u say, but if i were an outsider looking in, id sooner spend an extra £10 to got to a restaurant with a better quality offering than say, a pizza and beer... incidentally pizza express house wine is more expensive than ours, so is there beer, and also i find buying pizza a bit "pricey" at around £8-£9 when the cost of ingredients costs no more than 50p.

justin - you're preaching to the converted..! i'm just saying that much as I love the hillside, and appreciate the fantastic quality, it'd be nice to have a choice of good restaurants. And I also must say that aside from the food, the service in the hillside is phenomenal - always friendly and helpful, but not in your face. (you can pay me later with a free meal!!) however, I do think you could do with some competition...!! Does anyone know whats happening with elburt wurlings by the way? is it shutting down for good or just relocating?
