Bad news. The White Horse have put up a sign saying that drinks cannot be taken outside under any circumstances. This'll hit their Summer trade quite badly I imagine. I suspect they've been leant on by the local beaureacrats employed to stamp down on people enjoying themselves.

You can understand this sort of legislation for the "young" pubs in the town centre but this is ridiculous. The punters of the White Horse aren't your typical lager (or should that be alcopop?) louts. It's also situated in a street that has virtually no one walking down it. That's the problem with bureaucracy. Everyone get's tarred with the same brush.

This was one of the few places you could take young kids to in the summer and enjoy a cool drink on sunny days, sitting on the grass. All other pub gardens are small/dirty. Looks like its a trip to the White Horse in Hertingfordbury instead.

Typical petty minded small town beaurocracy from people with nothing better to do than interfere with other people's enjoyment! If someone really wanted to do something about this area of common land maybe putting a fence (or piano wire) around the icehouse to stop the local brats riding their bikes over it would be more useful. This practice must be dangerous and should be stopped before little Timmy falls off his bike and scrapes his knee, then his parents will sue the council for an unfeasably large sum and the whole moat will be fenced off to stop us hurting ourselves and yet another ancient freedom will be lost. I digress... Of course, what will happen is that people will still want to sit and enjoy our heritage on a sunny afternoon with a nice cool beer, which they will have to purchase in disposable containers from the offy and which will then have to be disposed of (unlike the White Horse's glasses). Are there any bins there? And, of course the White Horse will be reluctant to allow non-customers to use their sanitary facilities... so people will improvise.

One of the reasons we moved to Hertford was because of the relaxed atmosphere created by drinkers outside the White Horse. Last summer me and the wife spent many a happy evening enjoying a fine ale in the comfort that our kids could bounce about without annoying anyone. Its a bleedin shame that a few mishapen and bitter individuals can trash it for everyone else - I'd like to know how many people actually complained. Sounds like Hertford has lost another bit of soul.

will this also apply to the barge,often in the summer spills out as far as the bridge,white hart,all over the fountain,even the two brewers people sit outside....i bet the police do not start stopping people wandering around with glasses and bottles when the pubs shut..the white horse what a nice easy target!!!

There's been a couple of theories around as to why this has happened, one has been that the police were concerned with the mess made after people used the gardens - a load of rubbish as the white horse staff always cleared it up, even at midnight with torches! The other was of another, disgruntled, landlord of a pub that won't be mentioned, having an empty beer garden, so last summer was making a diary of how many people were sitting outside and as soon as one person sat outside this year made the complaint! You can make your own mind up as to which you think is right!

if there is a beer tent in the castle grounds for the "fun day" will this mean people will not be able to take their beer outside the tent into the castle grounds? also you can bet outside the white hart where the band comp is being held people will be drinking everywhere in the road!

The comments I have read in opposition to the quite logical ban on drinkers mulling around an area of historical significance in order for them to swill their drinks,drop their litter(even though this might be cleared) and quite certainly urinate anywhere that they wish, are totally ludicrous and are typical of the kind of morons who do not live in the area where they drink and have no understanding of the problems they cause. Let them find a pub(and there are many)which provide areas that they can vomit in! The pub in question did not advertise the use of public grounds in the Castle as part of their attraction and anyone with a brain going there for a drink would expect to consume this in the pub, so why should these idiots assume that something is being denied them. I live a short distance from a pub with no garden and would not welcome the overspill on a warm evening!!! I am watching points and will make sure that the authorities clamp down on this blatant infringement of the licencing laws. George. marine

Bootneck I assume that you've never been to the White Horse. I think you are confusing it with the White Hart. Physically less than a mile apart, culturally a million miles.

Bootneck, lets overlook the abusive tone of your comments and the fact that you clearly don't like the clientelle of The White Horse. The picture you paint is certainly not one I recognise. What exactly is the problem created by people drinking outside the pub? I've not seen the vomiting and urination you describe. Compared to other pubs aimed at younger people in the town, the customers of The White Horse are certainly not morons. Maybe you could give us your first hand experience of drinkers outside The White Horse.

Drinking outside the White Horse has always been a pleasure but I had always wondered whether it would be stopped. Regardless of where you can drink it is still one of the best pubs in Hertford and lets not forget they have some very comfortable sofa's upstairs.

Maybe the White Horse should investigate ways it can legally allow drinking in the immediate vicinity. Providing that there is provision for it within the law.

The point here is ARE the Herfford Constabulary applying this law evenly in the town. Will they stop people sitting and drinking on the tow path by the Barge, on the street outside the Sportsman ( why you would want to i dont know but have seen it) standing with bottles talking to the "Greeters" (ha ha) outside the Blackbirds. I could go on... I have nothing against said pubs but you cant have one rule for one and another for the rest!! To have been stopped sitting in the park is bad enough but not even being able to sit on the benches directly infront of the pub is beyound belief... The nanny state gone mad.

The essence of this is that someone complained to the police about members of the public drinking outside the White Horse. Once a complaint has been lodged the police are duty bound to investigate it. Having done so they found that the White Horse had no license for its patrons to consume alcohol outside of the premises. Now the White Horse can apply for a proper license but I assume that this will have to be made public and if so then the sme person(s) will lodge the same opposition which will again attract the attention of Hertford Town Council who lease the grounds from EHDC. Then as we know the nanny state kicks in and all manner of restrictions in the Health and Safety regulations are brought to the surface and used as a good reason why Joe Public cannot sit on the grass and enjoy a pint of English beer. Any member of the public is free to complain about any public house that allows its patrons to drink on the public highway without a license. So if there is a suitable minded busybody on this board they could in effect have all members of the public off the street at a stroke. Ths used to happen with great regularity in the City of London but commonsense usually prevailed - fortunately. It would be nice to know who actually raised the complaint in the first place - and why!!

I believe the Landlord is looking into what can be done legally to allow his customers again to enjoy said English Beer off premises. I wish him luck, if not for this summer but for next years...
