Taxi Drivers
I see that there's a letter in this weeks Mercury complaining about taxi drivers in Railway Street that "hang around in their string vests, loudly exchanging muscular argot peppered with procreative expletives".
Personally I've not had first hand experience of this but I've certainly known them to be rude and inconsiderate.
The Welwyn and Hatfield Times recently used the Freedom of Information Act to find out how many of the local drivers had criminal records. The number was surprisingly high, including some violent offences. I wonder what a similar exercise would reveal in Hertford?

Are taxi drivers regulated or vetted? If WGC & Hatfield's records show the above then it makes you wonder about Hertford's records - particularly if their customers are inebriated and scantily clad young ladies on Friday/Saturday nights.

Given that there is the potential to drive young tenagers home and that the 'official' status of registration by the authorities gives people confidence in the vetting, surely the drivers would have to pass a CRB check.

thay have to be checked by the council certain offences dont get counted when thay become spent different time periods for different offences at the same time some things never become spent at all these are for the more serious things meaning they dont get a taxi licence i have every faith in the council to make sure that we are safe when out in the evening in hertford those people without licences to be a taxi will be picked up ay some stage and face long periods in jail have faith big bruvver is always watching

This has got nothing to do with unlicenced taxis. It's about licenced taxi drivers with criminal convictions.

I agree entirely with the letter printed in this weeks Mercury. When
shopping in Hertford at weekends with my children I detour round the taxi rank due to the foul language.

I passed the rank this morning and the expletives were flying as usual.
It probably becomes a seperate topic (and I don't want to go off-topic) but has anyone ever bothered to ask them to tone it down a bit?
Maybe the frustration in these fellas is creeping out. I mean look at it logically, no rain means no gain.
No excuse though. Ignorance is bliss.

I don't know about their criminal records, but their fares are criminal, thats for sure! It can cost nearly £14 to get from Ware back to Hertford on a Friday night!

I avoid if I can. It's bad enough in the Day, would not even think about it at Night. Keep the numbers of Cabs you know are safe - book ahead if possible. I feel intimdated by them whenever I pass, which is a few times each day.

I have got nothing but praise for these guys and I am sure they have helped you all out at some time or another. They are normal human beings so if you asked them to tone their language down, they will. I must admit though that I have never heard them use bad language that is any worse than any other group of blokes having a chat together.

My daughter and her friends divert from Railway street to avoid walking past the taxi rank because of all the perving and intimidation from certain taxi drivers. One aging driver likes to lean out of the cab window whenever he drives past a pretty young girl and shout comments. Mindful of Admin's concern about libel, I will not mention individuals but will say that I would never use xxxxxx taxis. On a positive note, County Cars seem to use very courteous and pleasant drivers.

That is already potentially libellious Rachel as they only have two or three drivers but I am sure if you complained to xxxxxx himself, he would nip it in the bud.

I stated a fact, Wrapper - I would never use
xxxxxx taxis. That is a true fact and so cannot be libel.[:)]
