Market town
Having read a few of the posts regarding shopping in Hertford it has got me thinking. What are people's thoughts in having a few regualar good quality market stalls throughout the week along the pedestrianised area of Maidenhead Street? Maybe twice a week??
It would certainly start to bring the 'market' back to Hertford Town and may bring older people back into the town centre by bus to buy their bits and bobs.
Liasing with the Council, I am sure that this could work.

Interesting idea, but how much would they be used? I would have thought the traders would prefer weekends when there are more folk around in town.

i think you will find that most of the market stall holders go to other markets in the week thus will be unavailable to attend any proposed weekday market. PLUS there are old dreconean rules in place that a martket cannot be held within 7 miles of any other market .. which would rule out a market on a Tuesday (due to ware's market) and no market on Wednesday (due to Hoddesdon). No on shops on a Monday, which just leaves Thursday and Friday which are too near to Saturdays market ....

Azzza, you have hit the nail on the head. This precise argument came up when the usual war of words started between Ware and Hertford over the Saturday market. If the rules were relaxed and there could be markets anywhere on any day, one or possibly two towns would suffer and the market towns would vanish.
Something similar is happening with Farmers Markets. it is flatterng that the producers do like coming to Hetford; t is one of their best days. But it has meant that regular monthly Farmers Markets in hertford will eventually kil off the smaller markets held in the villages because ther eis more money to be made in Hertford.
The rejuvenation of the villages through this innovation has led somewhat perversely to their decline because of their success. It is very sad. I have worked with the producers and original organisers and Hertford has taken over.
