Am I the only person in Hertford who remembers the fact that Nuala O'Halpin isn't a new phenomenon and El Sol isn't her debut single? What about 'Choke' that was on sale 4 years ago and ended up being given away free? As for Caitlin Records, they didn't exist 2 years ago and Wayman has been her 'manager' for at least 5 years, trying mostly unseccessfully to propel her to stardom. Makes the bio on the Caitlin site amusing....'I walked into a Navie (sic) (Royal/American/French?)pub and heard this voice 6 months ago.....c'mon...that's not true and you know it. Pretty girl, ordinary voice, might do well. Kirsty McCall she ain't.

According to her interview on Hertneat this is her first single to go national rather than be released just locally. Don't go much further than the snug bar of the Dog and Whistle but believe it is No4 in the dance charts. Oh and you're quite right. I booked her for a Fun Day about 3/4 years ago when we got Hertbeat to put up a stage in Salisbury Square.

Oh God - I've turned into my dad - I have absolutely no idea who Ms O'Halpin is! Mind you, my daughter has just got Now 64 and I know 4 of the tracks - I'm dead chuffed! The Tremeloes anyone?

SloopjohnB Please take a look at Caitlin Records website wherein we are expected to believe that Wayman heard this 'ethereal' voice just 6 months ago and signed her on the spot! Oh pur-leese. Yep, we were in Salisbury Square 3 - 4 years ago too, as was Wayman et al. Perhaps he has forgotten.....?

I have been on said website and what a load of lies that it is. I have seen this Nuala a number of times, first time about 3 or 4 years ago, and she is always with this big bloke and assuming thats this Wayam bloke who signed her 6 months ago! Does he live in leap years?
Reply ID 23071
I have occasionally seen Nuala perform around Hertford and Ware over the past four of five years and have a copy of 'Choke' somewhere. She's got some good material that she plays well and I don't quite understand why Mr. Wayman (who has known Nuala for years) feels the need to invent stories about her when her songs should speak for themselves. Maybe dishonesty is the best policy for those that wish to succeed in today's society. Whatever road gets her there, I wish Nuala success (at least people are talking about her).

quote:It's really not baffling at all. Nuala has been around Hertford for at least 6 years under the various auspices of Mr Wayman and Dawg Records, which is exactly the point that was being made, but this isn't about the singer. Please don't wax lyrical about this 'discovery' in a pub in Kilburn 6 months ago when previously people were being cajoled and pestered by Mr W to buy her Choke single and 2002 and subsequent You Belong to Me single; go to her gigs and impromptu sets in local pubs and beer festivals etc., plus numerous appearances at his Open Mic Nights at The Marquee over the past 18 months. There is no shame in working hard to achieve success. People are well aware of the falseness and vacuity of the music industry, its spin and hype and I'm sure as her manager he is trying to use this to the betterment of his client. Despite his best efforts and his own hype he is still very new to the industry and should bear in mind that people have long memories and feel quite insulted by his attempts at reincarnation, not just of his client, but also of himself. His naivete was best evidenced by her absence at Hitchin's Rhythms of The World Festival in July, a marvellous showcase for talent across all genres and one at which many people commented on her absence. Other local entertainers appeared, who do not have the benefit of professional management. As for 'Fishwife,' it is never safe to make stereotypical assumptions, and as for the list of wannabes, no, I am most definitely NOT a jilted girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other, jealous singer/songwriter or failed promoter, studio investor, record executive, copyright holder etc., but I would be interested to know if there is currently a queue forming?

So I take it from Admin not slapping an Off Topic post on here that this Nuala O'Halpin is a local girl hopefully making good?? Like Leo, I've absolutely no idea who she is or if I should have heard of her but good luck to her anyway. Most overnight sensations seem to take years to become overnight sensations. But slogging away doing low paid gigs in Hertfordshire for years isn't quite as sensational as suddenly being grabbed from a slum pub somewhere because of your enchanting voice. On the website, you can listen to a couple of snipets of her songs and they're innoffensive enough if nothing spectacular.

My best friend (not local) is a rock/indie singer/guitarist who is working on her third album. Her biog is a load of lies! [:)] For one thing, she has shaved 10 years off her age!! [:0] [:D] It's pretty common in 'showbiz' to spice up your CV a bit and tweak your PR to improve your profile. That's why gossip websites are full of posts from ordinary people puncturing the hype around newly minted sucesses like The ***** Cat Dolls (2 of them are men, apparently!) Lilly Allen and that execrable 'I wish I was a punk rocker' girl [xx(]. I don't think it's fair to single out a local artist for criticism when she and her management are simply doing what a lot (OK not all, but still a lot) of people commonly do in the music industry.

On the Nuala thing. Could I just say that everyone's being a bit too eager to moan. El Sol is her first single. And the recent Herts Mercury article was based on an interview in which Nuala was misquoted on certain trivial facts. And as for the rest, anyone with any wit understands that every 'overnight success' is based on years of effort. You don't bore people with that in the press release; you make them understand the truth of how good it is. Don't moan about Nuala - support her. And by the way, Kirsty's name is McColl. Don't be so dumb and naive. Get a sense of a) proportion and b) humour. And don't slag people off if you can't spell the name you're quoting. And stop being so negative. And before some semi-literate halfwit brings it up - starting a sentence is and always has been grammatically correct. And less so when starting a paragraph. And why is anyone worrying about this when George Bush is stilll alive?

Just another few words on Nuala. Have any of you listened to her album. Or the single. Have any of you been to any of her gigs lately? Do any of you have any idea of what it takes to write and perform good music? Lemme guess. I think you haven't and don't. I have. It isn't easy. And it isn't just anyone who can do that. I think it's a shame so many people in this town are so ready to knock the people we should be proud of. I like Nuala's songs. More importantly I'm Nuala's friend. So of you feel like slagging her off for no reason other than your petty jealousy please go ahead. Just make sure I can't find out your real name because then you might have to stand up for yourself. This is getting dumber and dumber. If Nuala and her writing, publishing and support team can get her paid for her talent, good for them. Creativity is notoriously hard to sell to people who don't understand it and often needs "packaging". You cant audit it, like an adminstrative skill. It's entertainment and destroying the illusion is like moaning all the way through a sci-fi film that the aliens aren't real. Enjoy Nuala and rejoice that there are such people to brighten our lives.

However, having been called an 'illiterate git' and because I had the audacity to point out an error to Mr Saunders which he had made (whilst supposedly correcting the same error from another forum poster in a nasty manner) I felt duty bound to reply. Additionally, his remark about George Bush was off topic and of no relevance to this forum. Ironically, apart from saying I was not familiar with Nuala originally I had made no further comment or criticism of her. As Mr Saunders seems to think that is still the case I will set the record straight - I have now heard some of her music. She looks great and has a pretty good voice, but for me its as bland as can be and just musical wallpaper. Just because Nuala is a local product doesn't mean the music has to be to my taste. I wish her well regardless.

Most certainly are getting dumb and dumber and a tad aggressive too, afterall, this forum is to exchange views. My understanding of this whole Nuala thread isn't so much about her, as the attempt of her manager to convince many local people that she is a new found phenomenon, which clearly she isn't on both counts. Yes, like some others in previous posts I have also been to some of her appearances, in her original persona and recently. I don't think there has been much change over the years. She has a light and pleasant presentation and her voice suits her style, which reminds me very much of Katie Melula, but it's not enough to encourage me to believe she will progress beyond this locale. Yes I do know what it's like to write and perform. I do know what it's like to be involved in both small scale and large productions, having successfully callaborated on many occasions with Alan O'Duffy, Rowan O'Duffy and Brian Masterson. I have worked individually and as a part of groups across many different musical and performance styles. These experiences only prove that one man's meat is another's poison.....

A quote from this thread really upsets me......'Kevsaunders' I quote...... " Just make sure I can't find out your real name because then you might have to stand up for yourself. I mean it maaaaan" Is this a threat? If it isn't it bloody well sounds like one! (and just for the record 'man' has just one 'a' - putting in five a's in a row does not make it more aggressive or more funny, it simply highlights a lack of vocabulary - also used in the message was 'Lemme'- Difficult to find in the Oxford English, so I can only presume that 'let me' was just a step too far to type early this morning Hmmm?) Anyway back to the real substance of this thread... Nuala's new stuff is not really to my taste, but it doesn't offend and I really do wish her well. It's a very tough business and only the very best and the very dedicated have a chance of making it. It's just a shame that her past has been ignored by her 'new' label. Surely this 'back catalogue' is an important part of the development of an artist? Perhaps they deem it 'not good enough' to re-promote, or they are trying to hide it - I don't understand why (or how since it is still available on a very well known electronic music download site) As for Kevsaunders, whoever you are, I think you should apologise for your overtly aggressive comments. They have no place on this forum whatsoever!

Sheila - I'm surprised you don't know who Kev Saunders is because if it were not for Kev there might possibly be no Hertford music scene at all. Considering the events at the Marquee over the weekend and the time and effort Kev puts in to this venue and other events (usually for little or no reward whatsoever) I think he is entitled to a rant and moan every now and then. I often feel like doing something similar myself; and I would think that many on this forum would forgive Kev the ocassional outburst as well.

In any case, ranting and moaning is understandable if you disagree with something, but threats? Please not on this forum. Good luck to Kev and all he does, but believe me, the music scene in Hertford revolves around no one individual. Live music is alive and well in more places than just the Marquee. Some financial backing would help music in the town grow even more, but you know better than most how difficult that is to come by!

Because Sheila doesn't agree with you?Fortunately, the local music scene doesn't just revolve around 'yer actual' pop/rock bands with 'real' music, Mr Saunders, or begin and end at The Marquee. Thankfully it consists of many diverse styles including rock/pop, traditional folk, country, jazz, blues, covers etc., performed by many talented people of all ages and backgrounds in and around Hertford. Secondly: Unnatural interest in Nuala? Ha! Actually, I grew bored with the whole Nuala subject some time ago until chancing upon these recent posts. Obviously you need to refer back to the original post on 7 August regarding Nuala.....this was a question about her rebranding by her manager, flagrantly ignoring the fact that a large number of people locally had been urged, and did, support her in local pubs and gigs. These local people were then supposed to believe her manager's discovery of her some 6 months ago. I suggest you read the other posts regarding this. As I have previously said, she's a pretty girl with an OK voice and after such a long time trying, I hope she does well.

whoopee - you asked me to explain then you go all pre school when I did - sorry, I won't bother next time! As for being easily impressed - I've lived here for about 12 years and before the Marquee came along we longed for a venue of that size to open. It is still not wholly unreasonable to think it could be false even if unlikely. Kevin’s post (in my opinion) was a threatening: “Just make sure I can't find out your real name because then you might have to stand up for yourself. I mean it maaaaan”. Sometimes in these circumstances of ‘internet bravery’ on a forum many people hide behind a false name. However, in this case then I am assuming – KevSaunders really is Kev Saunders. However, I think this sort of behaviour is wholly reprehensible and without even an Admin comment – he really ought to be warned that these actions may lead to a ban. I don’t care what he has done for the music scene nothing that was posted deserved the original poster to perhaps feel intimidated. If anything I think it taints anything he is associated with. I’m surprised that so many people comb posts for spelling and grammar mistakes here yet so few take exception to his threatening comments.

I’m surprised that so many people comb posts for spelling and grammar mistakes here yet so few take exception to his threatening comments.

Admin - has this thread run it's course? Far too many off-topic posts?

Hear hear Berb! Some good points have been made about the general negativity and bitchiness flying around though so perhaps its been worth it.

I agree with closing this one down too as it has moved dramatically from a question regarding the quite clearly made-up publicity regarding a local singers background. I don't think it was ever about making nasty or even negative comments about the music. Let's face it the thread was called 'the rebranding of Nuala' not 'lets all get together and slag off a local for having a go at becoming a successful singer' Moreover I agree wholeheartedly with Avarice in his/her view that threatening words have no place ANYWHERE on this site. Maybe a final 'sorry I was out of order' from Mr Saunders would round this thread off, but I don't suppose we'll get one. Or maybe, just maybe I'm wrong.

Yes, I agree too. This thread has degenerated into a soap box for ranters who feel the need to threaten anyone who doesn't share their point of view and musical taste. It was never an attack on Nuala, it opened as comments about her manager. I must wholly take the blame for this - perhaps I should've called the thread "Who does Nuala's Manager Think He's Trying to Kid?" With 20/20 hindsight that would've been a far more acceptable and fitting title.

Why stop it just when it's getting good? Nobody turned up at Hartham last night for the 9.00pm "my opinion's best so I'm going to punch you" event. From this I suspect the Town needs this platform to get these strong beliefs out of it's system. Of course we could always re-focus our attention on the bird who sells the Big Issue by Bircherley Green. She's Marty Wilde's daughter by all accounts

quote:Herbert, you always make me laugh. We did turn up for the fight but when we got there the Big Issue seller was already having a girlie tussle with "She who cannot be mentioned anymore for fear of upsetting her sycophantic following." Have to say the Big Issue Wilde Woman was really getting stuck in, and we thought it best to watch from the relative safety of the liberally faecal encrusted sand-pit. A very spooky experience. [:0]

I suppose making 2 out of 577 members laugh is a start - me being the other. In fact that's 3 because I'm Ian Ozenthroat too (I had a cold - but I don't want to talk about it). If only the Big Issue Woman sold the Guardian, Lucozade & Chewits. She'd have an apartment in the Riviere in no time. OK - I suspect sunset-time for this thread is near.

The following from Kev Me again. First of all, salute to Andrew (I think it was Andrew) who got my reference to God Save The Queen, which I added because I thought people would understand it as a sort of punk rock shorthand that is full of irony that means you don't exactly mean it. Clearly that didn't work for anyone else. And thank you to those who've said supportive things. Secondly - and most importantly... Sorry. I do get a bit stroppy after a few pints and can't help jumping to the defence of my friends. And I have this slightly sad Joe Strummer thing that makes me feel there's a duty to be provocative and say exactly what I feel. In the past that's got me a broken nose and lots of other injuries at the hands of Nazis. But you lot aren't like them and I regret ranting at you as if you were. It didn't occur to me that anyone would take my late-night, pissed and bombastic comments so seriously. I don't apologise for the way I feel but I do apologise if anyone really felt that I was threatening them. I think those that know me will tell you I'm really not like that. Usually it really pisses me off when people sign their emails with 'peace' because it sounds so glib. But. 'PEACE'. Really. And again, I'm sorry. Kev (who should've used an alias) Saunders
