A great feature, and a good selection. What I really love about old photos of Hertford is that you can nearly always recognise buildings that still remain. Note to Steve - some of the text describing the photos disappears at the bottom of the page.

This is excellent - I can remember Hertford before Birchley Green but I have problems visualising just what was where. These might help ..

Great stuff Steve. Some of these scenes survived years after the photos were taken and into my own memories. The pace of change was, perhaps, slower. I'm looking for a head-on photo of the White Lion pre-war. (Something's gone missing between my house and it from the look of the brickwork.) Anybody got one?

Something I found a bit creepy is the feet of the horse-trough - scarily realistic. These feet were a feature on a number of troughs around the town. [img]../images/past/horse_trough_feet.jpg[/img]

There is a great display in the exit at Waitrose with lots of pictures of the the old Bicherley Green.

Fabulous! How I loved the arcade and its record shop! Also the driving school all comes back now - I must have been one of the last to take a test in Hertford. (Passed 1st time too!) Mind you probably easier in those days.
