I heard someone talking on the radio about Ugly's closing down, and having done a Google search found a story on the Sunday People's site. As to how true it is is anyone's guess!! UGLY JADE SHOP GOES BUST EXCLUSIVE Millionaire's prices 'too expensive By Caroline Waterston MILLIONAIRE Jade Goody is shut ting down her beauty salon Ugly's after it failed to take off. The gobby Big Brother star poured £50,000 of her own cash into the shop. But the 25-year-old mum of two has decided to close it after just a year because it's not making the money she had dreamed of. Friends believe Jade's prices were too high. An insider said: "Because of this, clients are limited and it hasn't been as successful as she'd hoped." Jade - who made a million after taking BB by storm in 2002 - launched the salon in Hertford last September. She said at the time: "If I can do it, anyone can." But nowthe business is set to close in January after the Christmas rush. The insider said: "Jade is gutted. She realises her TV fame and fortune will dry up and thought Ugly's would be a long-term investment." Jade runs the salon with best pal Carly Walpole. Facials range from £35 to £42 and massages are priced between £25 and £45. Jade has never been great with cash. She once faced jail over a tax bill, got evicted for rent arrears and lost £500,000 in a cheque scam. An aide said: "Jade swears the parlour's not in debt. "She is closing it because a nightclub has bought the property above her and she thought that would be a concern for the business."

If the story is true I have to be honest and say the venture lasted 6 months longer than I anticipated! I always had the feeling it was little more than a TV stunt and expected the doors to be shut once the cameras had gone. Having said that, fair play to the girl - she has made very litle talent go a long way.

The News of The World is also carrying the story but mentions a source saying that the staff will be "gutted" as they haven't been told yet.

quote:My, my..what a surprise! It's hardly a shock as it's been a stunt from the start. It can't have helped that Ms Goody kept ending up in Harlow on the rare occasions that she tipped up for work, believing that's where Hertford is! Oh dear oh dear. As for the detrimental effect to her business of a nightclub upstairs.....surely that would be an advantage as she can hardly get lost just coming down the stairs in the morning can she? Can she....? The impact of the shop had little significance beyond its novelty value and appeal to those people who eat, sleep and breathe Big Brother, believing it to be the best thing since sliced bread. At least we shan't have to put up with her continual presence in the Mercury.

Fish Wife I Could not agree more - will Hertford miss this place? I hope not ...

The celeb mags always say the salon is in Essex... there's a clue in the address with Hertford being the county town of.. er.. Hertfordshire, so maybe the Big Brother-ites couldn't find it. My friend is a beautician and has set herself up in business and said that such businesses (and I guess many new businesses??) don't tend to make money in the first year so she seems to be bailing out quite prematurely. But didn't seem that popular with the locals. What will we get now?? A mobile phone shop? A charity shop? Wasn't it on a short lease? So was it just for the tv show and increased exposure rather than a real business, which is very hard of those working with/for her.

If, on the other hand, you are impressionable, and feel that somehow some 'celebriteeee' will rub off on you, then Ugleys is/was the place to be. I don't supose it helped that her attitude to customers and staff was at best offhand and at worst downright rude. Quite agree - no loss whatsoever...but on the otherhand...perhaps yet another mobile phone shop to compete with T Mobile/O2, or better still, another coffee bar. It won't be long before you will be able to see tumble weed blowing along Fore Street......

the staff in there were the worst - I have heard of many people going in and coming out disgusted at the way they were treated/spoken to. This sort of establishment is meant to make you feel relaxed and pampered (even if you're going for a painful waxing!) but so many people left feeling uptight and p'd off - I doubt the salon has many regular customers.

Well Well, Not much of a surprise there then. It was a total scam to begin with, how could she compete with at least 8 others in Hertford according to Yell.com it was one to many.

In chatrooms like these, your ability to spell is important, as it is a reflection of how well you converse. I did actually find it hard to read that last post and I felt it necessary to say so. When I see words like 'Many' spelt 'Meny' and 'Compete' spelt 'Compeat', I feel compelled to comment on it. If someone sang a song with 6 wrong notes in the 1st line, I'm sure you would comment on how badly out of tune the song was sung? .... Ok, so it was off topic, but I felt it relevant to the thread.

I thought we all wanted to see a busy and thriving Hertford town centre, with all the retail premises occupied and attracting plenty of people to the town? We're being a bit picky in who we want to see, though, with people in the Shopping thread having been dismissive of Slades, the Spanish Property Shop, Ugleys (and having too many beauty shops on the whole) and I get a general feeling that we are selective about the businesses we want in Hertford when we cannot really afford to be. Jade's shop may or may not have been a stunt but it cannot benefit the town to have another prime retail spot sitting empty. Walking through Hertford this weekend seeing all the empty and boarded up premises was really quite depressing.

Maybe this is just the next step in the technological revolution. I very rarely buy anything in the town any more as it is usually cheaper and easier to buy online.

Yes it is extremely depressing to see so many shops boarded up, and even more depressing when you find out what the business rates are in town. That's in addition to the rental costs for the units. It's no wonder shops can't stay in business and an urgent review is required before we become a town of charity/pound shops.

This site is increasingly depressing to read! I do wonder if everyone complaining about the lack of variety of shops actually spend much time in the town, or just do the odd dash in to a bank, chemist etc. Take time to wander round the whole town, and personally I think we've got an impressive range of shops and services on offer, although understandably not the large high street chains of WGC, Stevenage or Harlow. Yes, there are shops and services that close, but most premises don't stay empty for that long, and an increase in coffee shops, mobile phone shops etc are what you see in every high street across the country, as those are the facilities people are wanting to use now. Rant over!

Ah Dude. You are right. The drop into office workers has an effect on the lunchtime spend. Been noticing this for some time - especially the drop in numbers from County Hall. But this has been a slow process. A national company with a local shop with empty office space above rang me to enquire as to any concessions available from Council regarding car parking as an encouragement to new tenants. I have been interested by the number of companies locating onto Foxholes/John Tate that you would not normally associate with this type of space being as they are service type outlets. But they are just as close to Brookfield Farm for a quick lunchtime trip and have free parking there and dedicated parking on the estate. Why work from the town centre.

Fair play to the girl, she is more successful than probably 95% of people on this forum yet receives no credit at all. So her business venture didn't work out, so what, she tried and that's more than most. I also get the impression that people feel if Hertford hasn't got the shops THEY want then the shops are rubbish. I am new to Hertford and from what I see there is a completely different type of shop in Hertford to that in Stevenage. If Hertford began to open up all the shops we feel we NEED then it would be just like Stevenage/Harlow/WGC. Hertford has a lot of unique shops and I hope it stays that way.

She has made the most of the opportunities that have been given to her and everything the media say cannot be taken as fact, they get things wrong. If I had the opportunities that she has had I would take the bull by the horns and go for it. Good luck to her in what ever she does next.

Maybe she hasn't got the best business sense but like someone else mentioned, she has made the most of here opportunities. Not once have I ever seen Jade be rude, arrogant or nasty - she genuinely seems like a nice person even if she isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I would think that by the majority of sticks people use to measure success then Jade would be considered successful. Fame – Yes Money – Yes Home – I don’t know where she lives but I’m assuming it’s probably quite large and in a nice area. Car – From memory I think it was Porsche Cayenne (not my personal choice but nevertheless still a prestigious make). Career – The overall product of ‘Jade’ that seems to be her career does seem to do fairly well. Family – Yes, I don’t know the intimate details but she seems to have a happy home life. No, she is not the most intelligent person but intelligence is not used generally by the majority of people as a guide to someone’s success. Plus I don’t think she is the complete ugly monstrosity that people seem to make her out to be. (hopefully no spelling mistakes)

to be honest, I think we need to get back to the point here that the salon has apparently gone bust and this could well be down to the fact that they were overpriced, and offered an unfriendly/unprofessional service according to many. I would have thought it obvious that a beauty salon needs to be a welcoming place that you leave feeling pampered and refreshed.

No-one in their right mind would like to see Hertford turned into a mini version of Stevenage, WGC or heaven forbid....Harlow. The town has needed a greater variety of shops for a very long time. We have enough fancy goods shops, enough boutiques for teenage girls, enough beautification salons, enough card shops. The night-time economy in Hertford is much more successful than the day-time economy. Have you seen the tumble weed in Fore Street on week days? The town isn't about having nice shops to look at on Saturdays, it's about providing enough diversity and choice for the folk who live and work here, who don't necessarily want to be 'bootified' or sprayed orange to within an inch of their lives.

Look at it this way, Jade has made a million (or 2) from her 15 minutes of fame, and she has no doubt been advised to not only "open" her salon but now get rid of it. If she's loosing money, no mater how rich she is there's no point throwing more good money after bad. Never having been a client it's not a shop I'll miss, but I'd rather see it rented out then empty. Hopefully the replacement (if there is one) will prove to be a bit more of a benefit to the town centre as a whole.

quote:How could I possibly be disappointed (please note the correct spelling)? Anyway... There have been a number of comments about how depressing it is to see various boarded up properties around Hertford's town centre. I moved here from North London a year ago and have seen this happen to other towns like Southgate and, to a lesser extent, Enfield Town. In both cases independent shops were either closing or relocating because the rents had been increased to an amount that only the big retail chains could afford. Does the rental cost in Hertford compare favourably with other locations? It would indeed be sad to see another shop in Hertford stay boarded up and it would also be a shame if Ugly's became yet another unnecessary mobile phone shop, charity shop or beauty salon (Enfield's full of them too).

According to the Mercury, Ugly's is staying and a new lease has been signed. Jade's business partner denies that prices are too high. Just goes to show, you can't believe everything you read in the Sunday tabloids. Macdonalds is closing though and will finish up on September 9th, so we were all half right which isn't bad!

According to the Mercury, Ugly's is staying and a new lease has been signed. Jade's business partner denies that prices are too high. Just goes to show, you can't believe everything you read in the Sunday tabloids.

Do you think she's told Carly?
Reply ID 24392
Even the quotes from Carly in the Mercury were a bit vague. She said they'd signed a new lease but wouldn't say how long it was - it could have just been 6 months to get them to January, as the original tabloid story said they were closing after Christmas.

So, here we go again. Took a walk with Mrs S this morning along Bull Plain and Maddisons the ladies haidressers, looks decidedly shut. Nothing in shop apart from chair and sign and a large pile of mail. Might be on holiday but ............ Can't keep on starting new threads every time a shop closes or looks like it but the posts prior to this are leading in a certain direction.

Can I just ask a quick question to all of you who have enjoyed dismissing this venture - how many of you have tried to set up your own business in Hertford? I would love to hear that you are all proprietors who are so busy running their own business in a town that does demand high rent & rates for the most basic of services. However as I suspect most of you aren't, I would suggest that you would rather spend your time talking about tabloid speculation & feeling superior to see someone fail, especially an "ordinary person" who has made millions. Lets all focus on the fact she is apparently thick, but let's face it she didn't even win BB, it's been a number of years ago & she is still on our screens - thing like that don't happen by accident - look at the 'winners' since - can you remember their names? I'm not the biggest Jade fan in the world ever, I believe she probably could have made more effort to make it a success. But she did put Hertford on the map & she tried, how many of you can say that?

Hertford has many wonderful individuals and features, but (generalising) as a comnmunity it does tend to be snobby, judgemental and intolerant of financial failure. Stumble in this town, it will kick the s**t out of you until you get back up. I suspect that is why it was chosen by the TV company for a celebrity who makes a living from allowing herself to be ridiculed. I think we all failed to rise to the bait quite well. Hurrah!

Question, if another beauty salon failed next week would there be as much interest in the thread? Would the attitude be a bit more sympathetic? It seems to be with other shops closing.

Big difference, and its a pattern repeated in every town on the country. Anyway, as Steve says, we are starting to shift off topic. What I was interested to hear was that Jade blamed a nightclub opening above (in her own column), when no application has been made for one. Sounds fishy to me. Thats why i'm tending to believe the short termism of the whole idea. But its only a gut feel.

There is a notice up in the window saying the shop is now closed and thanking people for their custom. There was number to call if anyone had gift vouchers which hadn't been redeemed. From what I could see through the window, the furniture has largely been removed. Regardless what people think of the celebrity owner, it's a real shame that this will result in another empty shop in Hertford. Let's hope we get another tenant soon, be it restaurant or nail salon as it's very depressing to have another empty shop.
Reply ID 27451
Just goes to show that business rent and rates in Hertford are too high I suppose, even for 'celebrities' that benefit from 'free publicity'. Or perhaps it was all a publicity stunt? I suppose we'll never really know. I think now we are back to 14 empty shops in Hertford. This is terrible for any town but the COUNTY TOWN? This number of empty shops does not take into account the empty office space where businesses have re-located to cheaper space on business parks. This 'hidden loss' has a detrimental knock on effect on the rest of the town by reducing daytime spending. Any ideas how to stop this alarming decline?
Reply ID 27452
yes the council need to stop putting the rates up to high and put something back in to our dying town help the smaller buisness rather then bully them and put the hertford back into hertfordshire because soon we could just be tumbleweedshire
Reply ID 27453
David, you know me and will appreciate how I view your comments (BTW reply to email tomorrow). Every day someone says to me - 'Sloop, this is the County town.'. Basically no one who should, takes the slighest bit of notice. What is the point of being a county town if there is no investment in it, or even in the idea. As for Jades well, it was always a TV show - from the moment the crew trailed her around town looking at empty premises. It should surpise no one that it has gone - it was a stage set. At least Jade or Granada have something to sell at the end of it. But as the Corn Exchange leaks water into the premises and there is a huge discrepancy between what the Town council and the new lessees believe is required to bring the building into 2006, it is more likely that the roof will fall in before a new tenant is found. I hope not. Another empty shop - I've said somewhere else on this site that there is more out there. There is. And it is not the X Files or even the X Factor. I will no doubt attract a bit of flack for saying all this but is anyone really surprised!!

Before retiring and in response to both David and Jay I am bookiing in a breakfast meeting for Mike Carver, ex Leader of East Herts who is now looking to consult with businesses over the next Strategic Plan. Your attendance at this and your comments will be appreciated. Once this is firmed up will let you know. This is aimed at the business owner and David will remember the discussions at Wallfields; so not a general bun fight but if any business owner would like to know more please make me aware through my profile. I will try if possible to keep the forum up to speed at what happens at these events but the comments on this site continue to form a huge part of my feedback upwards. Whether it makes any difference I don't know.
Reply ID 27488
Quite clearly something needs to be done. The meeting over at Wallfields was extremely well attended by local businesses and it was quite clear that we are all concerned at the moment. Unfortunately, it appears that the meeting was simply another 'talk shop' and no actions have come from it so far - it appeared to me that the feedback would be taken back to other committees to talk about them. Yet more talk shops about what should be done, resolutions passed to do something, and someone given instructions to put together a paper to go through more committees. I dispair at this nonsence. If EHDC were in buisiness it would have closed years ago. Let's have some action before our lovely town dies! Sloop- everyone knows that you work very hard at trying to raise the ovedrall profile of the town, but empty shops are clearly not helping anyone and the people that we pay through our council tax bills and vote to represent us need to be asked some very direct questions. No messing about, we need answers! Initially a meeting with Mr Carver would be great, but it needs to be followed through. I completely agree with Jayzee - Sloop this is not your fault! Action is needed and I for one will do anyting in my power to make Hertford as prosperous as possible. It is for everyone's benefit. I hope others are with me and I hope those that matter will listen and help.

Well I got the phone call from the Mercury already asking me what I knew, obviously keep their eyes on this forum!!, although he did mention a name of someone I was supposed to have talked to ... someone may of phoned them .... you know who you are, naughty!! I have done a "no commment, sorry I can't help you" to the Mercuy and unfortunately will not be able to discuss this any further on the forum just in case the info is twisted and printed in completely wrong context. I will say that I feel sorry for the staff and Carly for being caught up in this media circus we call "reality tv" and for those who thought they had a career in the shop were disappointed when told of the closure. I think, however, that Jade will just pick her self up, carry on partying, fundraising, and whatever..... to get more media attention until the bubble bursts ... which it will do at some point. I must state these are my own personal observations and not necessarily drawn from any conversations I have had with staff members (that's the legal bit out of the way anyway!!). Another empty shop is not a good thing - I think I will expand and open up a lapdancing club, should go down well in Hertford, don't you think ....... relax Councillors, only joking (for now!).

Mr P - please have a look at..... http://www.eastherts.gov.uk/pressrel/2006/10NewLeader.htm I think that will explain. Perhaps also it is time for a new thread for ideas on things that should and can be done in the town to end this stream of closing shops and businesses. Ugly's has closed. End of story. Full Stop.
Reply ID 27498
I think the main point shouldn't be lost - Ugly's was never going to be more than a tv programme and those in charge of employing people and them putting these on the dole should be ashamed of themselves. The fact that 'Carly and Jade' went into this with a frosted shop-front and bookmaker-style stigma attached just goes to show that it was just a tv programme. What is sad is that, as David states, that there are now 14 shops empty in such a small County Town centre. People do go on about the business rates charged by EHDC, but what about the rent charged by the few landlords that outrightly own the properties involved?
Reply ID 27499
I understand that EHDC doesn't set the rates. They are set nationally. Landlords with empty properties simply baffle me. I have no idea what they expect to achieve.
Reply ID 27500
David, you are correct. The rates are set by the government and EHDC collect them. Any landlord that owns (and most do outrightly) a property whilst no active shop is trading tends to make money from the 'let' of the flat or flats above. Or offices.

But it isn't a General Election year and high rates are hitting and in some cases mortally wounding little shops everywhere, as if they haven't got enough on their counters so to speak with the out of town retail giants like Tesco, Asda and the rest. A change in the level of rates and a step taken towards survival, regeneration and encouragement for a community's own businesses....

I have always thought that one of Hertford's strengths was the number and variety of small, a bit different, serving a niche shops. Sadly though, these are the kind of businesses most likely to be unable to afford high rents, rates etc. It just goes round & round in ever diminishing circles.

I agree that it is a shame, whoever Jade is. A failing business is always unpleasant for all involved. The odd side was, whilst flicking through channels last night (Honestly, I wasn't watching) they had the Jade moving to Hertford programme.

On the subject of empty shops, I was chatting to the guy in the new house type shop in Birchley Green. Apparently the rates for the 2 shops they have there are cheaper than in the main town. I would have thought it was a good location, with the other shops and people going to and from the Bus Station.

Mr Mick - up with the larks this morning! I have to say I feel a bit sorry for the employees though who may have been 'duped' into the belief that this was intended to be a real business.

FishWife - Red Felt and Bulky Skirts - lol, I'm not sure what club you have been to!! Joking apart if I thought I could afford the lease I would grab that building like a shot, ideal for a club, in the middle of town. I know people in the industry that pole dance/lap dance, it is a complete art and hardwork. So if anyone has a spare 100k lying around, invest in a lapdancing club for Hertford, that would surely finish the prims off once and for all. If not I should just ring Granada TV and go round 2 with "no more goody girls - here come the naughty girls".!!! (Wonder if they will pay the first years lease for me???!!!)

I heard of a barber (not in Hertford, admittedly) who has a booming business because he got himself an alcohol license and now a license/whatever and has installed pole dancing for his waiting customers. Sex always sells. Now, where did I put my webcam...?

quote:A brilliant idea! How about pole dancing for the over 60s, by the over 60s? It would really liven up the Edinburgh Woollen Mills. Can reindeer be involved too?

Being as we're talking lapdancing and barbers.... I had the idea a while back of opening a topless barbers. I even had a name for it "Barnet & Bristols". Budding entrepeneurs feel free to use it as your own.

Rest easy Sloop - any similarities to this concept and other persons, living or dead, is merely coincidental.... My original idea was simply the bringing together of two significant elements in a chaps life. What with the height a person finds themselves whilst sitting having their hair cut combined with the other signature component of the "Barnet & Bristols" philosphy it seemed like such an obvious marriage that it was an almost embarrassing cultural oversight for it not to be done. What Bar did you leave the brown paper parcel at?

quote:I think you might find that the majority of machines that accept cards on the Chip and Pin format are not of the Swipe variety but rather the stationary version. This is due to the connection having to be made with the card issuer to arrange debiting of the relevant amount from the card holder's account.

[:(!][:(!][:(!] Can somebody please arrange for Landy to have an irony implant? Preferably one that involves using a large pole (no, not a builder/plumber/electrician). [:(]

I heard east herts council turned down serendipity for their application next door, does anyone have any info??

quote:Why did they turn this application down on the grounds that the area is covered red and is prime retail but a similar application from Caffe Nero is approved. On the subject of Jade. We were channel hopping the other night (good trick if you can do it) and found a programme on Living TV called 'Jade's PA'. If anyone ever doubted that the whole thing was nothing but a reality TV show then this proved how manipulative TV companies can be to get mileage out of a non event. Underlined Jade's lack of anything and the lengths people will go to to get a)on TV b) a job and c) close to a J list celebrity.

She was so proud of herself telling everyone in the CBB house that everything she had done in her "career" since the original BB was a success. She obviously forgot about her salon. And the London marathon.

and now her second stint on BB is hardly something to be proud of is it..............
