Balls Park Camp Site
I've made a new discovery about Hertford - quite something after 14 years of living here! Friends of mine are camping in Balls Park. It's a really lovely site with loads of space and woodland for kids, lovely shower and toilet block. But the most surprising thing of all (to me anyway) is that there are quite a few local people who pitch up there to give the kids some freedom, fresh air and get them away from the temptation of the tv and games console! They can still nip home for essentials or if the weather gets too cold and miserable. Seems very sensible if you have a small garden, small budget and very active kids. I quite like the idea of a second home in Hertford for the summer!

I knew it was there, I also know of someone who camps there from Barnet, which I always found strange as Barnet is so close. But now you say people from Hertford camp there it doesn't seem so strange lol [;)]

Me and Mrs Joby have camped up there a few times - great to have it on the doorstep should a spontaneous camping urge arise one sunny Saturday afternoon. Being a CCC site, it's not the cheapest, but it is lovely - you could be anywhere - and well worth a visit. There are some lovely walks in the area, too: Brickendon for a swift half in the Farmer's Boy, Ball's Wood nature reserve etc.

The CSPs used to go there en famille on a Friday after work/school. Once in the site you could be anywhere. If we climbed a tree we could see our house (but we didn't). If the site was busy we could walk home for a shower and come back with something from the fridge. Wonderful.
We do the same with grandson now. It was a great, risk-free way to get him used to camping from a very early age. I think there's an etiquette to camping with children just like there is (or should be) in a restaurant.

Took the boy there last year and it was wonderful.
He'd been badgering me to take him camping and I thought it might be better to find out whether he liked it a mile from home rather than in the depths of Snowdonia...
May even head up there later this month for a night if the weather looks good when picking up from school.

After my divorce and determined to not end up as yet another lonely middle-aged man in a bedsit, I lived there for a summer, while I sought a good location for single life. The surroundings were perfect for a man wrestling with his concience, missing his children and facing an unexpected future. There was a tree I'd sit under and think. It was a lovely place and maybe it's time I revisited it in less stressful circumstances.
