Cycling in and around Hertford

Do you do it? Do you like it? Where do you go(on road off road)? Is there anything you would like? Guided rides, better facilities etc?

Are you in a position of influence regarding cycling in the area?

Rather than posting a thread asking for people's views, why not give us your own so we know the point you're trying to make.

I've recently bought a bike to get out and about in Hertford. Cole Green Way seems a nice ride, nothing too intense. I ride into town as often as poss rather than drive. The information office in Hertford was useless with regards to cycling routes and info. So a source for this would be nice. The cycle paths seem ok on the roads although at some points I use the pavement instead as its a lot safer.

Some nice easy routes up beyond Bengeo towards Chapmore End, Stapleford, Waterford - a loop through these villages will be about 10 miles. A few hills but nothing intense. Also a little further west is Bramfield Woods which has plenty of routes through. The country which surrounds the whole of Hertford is only 10 minutes away from anywhere in the town and is stunning. Or head down the Lea towards London - pretty easy run of 15 miles from Hertford and you'll hit the M25 (its a flyover - nothing but a good guide). Another 15 miles or so and you'll be in central London. As for changes - yes I will mention the no cycling rule through Woodhall Park. One part of my regular route goes past here and I feel like I'm not welcome even though I'm on the road!

I recently picked up a leaflet from Hartham Pool which illustrated cycle routes and rides in East Herts. I can't remember who published it - and it's been recycled now! But it's likely to be EHDC leisure dept.

If there's a lorry up my a55 and the pavement is clear then it's safer all round. I'm not the type to go bombing through pedestrian areas and knocking people over but if the pavements free and there's traffic behind me then I may use the pavement. Just using a bit of common sense. I wish all cyclists did. nora batty/Sargasso, thanks for the info. Will check it all out. Admin, maybe if these maps/routes are available in pdf form they would be good additions to the Cycling section.

Hey, I know what it's like out there, (I cycle too) but I've been knocked down more than once stepping out of my front gate by cyclists who presumably think they are "using common sense", causing injury to both. Now I peer round the corner before exiting onto the pavement. I shouldn't have to do that.

I shouldn't be forced off the road by road-rage induced lorry drivers but I am. Better not stray off topic - this is being discusses in the Fore Street post - http://www.hertford.net/yoursay/topic.php?id=1858

http://www.eastherts.gov.uk/community/cycling.htm Lots of info about cycling locally, including the leaflets that Nora refers to. Can I just hijack this thread to respond to some points about cycling in the other threads (e.g. about cyclists mis-using Fore Street). It is of course wrong to disobey the highway code but I just want to try to explain why some cyclists do all those things that wind up drivers (jump red lights, weave in and out of traffic, use the pavement). The car is king in Herts - don't we have the second-highest number of per-capita cars in the UK? And more three-car households than any other county in the UK? We all know how ludicrous the congestion is around here, how difficult it is to park, how busy and dangerous the roads are, how bad the pollution is. Yet those of us who make an effort to use our bikes for local journeys seem to get no courtesy and support from car users and instead have to put up with what is often an unpleasant and dangerous experience. For every cyclist jumping a red light, I can show you a driver sailing across a roundabout with no regard for the cyclist on the roundabout who has to break and swerve to avoid a collision. Yes, cyclists do sometimes use the pavements - I note Mayor Ken is bringing in a system of fines to counter this, and rightly so - but I've lost count of the number of cars that have overtaken me on my bike and dangerously cut me up so I've had to take avoiding action. The point I'm trying to make is that cyclists do misbehave but when you consider what they have to put up with from impatient and ignorant drivers who seem to grudge sharing the road with a healthy, green form of transport, maybe you should cut them a bit of slack.

Rachel I could not have said that better myself!! I had to take my bike into Marshalls on Saturday and I am not a fan of riding on the road with a car up my backside, which is generally the case in Hertford Town Centre. I opted to walk on the path with my bike (not ride). The filthy looks I got from angry pedestrian because I was taking up so much space on the path even though I was the one getting out of peoples way and trying to be polite about it! It really is a no win situation, if you are on the road then the cars get the hump with you if you are on the path the pedestrians get the hump (rightly so, I agree). But what are we supposed to do, put up with it? I think we need more cycle lanes in Hertford, especially around the town centre area to allow cyclists to get in and out of the town more safetly. It might even solve the parking troubles in the town if more people felt safe to use there cycles?

I ride with a local club and we are sometimes asked to give input to local cycle ventures. The latest ones being more clear signs for the bike lanes on North Road and a new cycle lane on the A414 heading out west on the section near Willowmead out to Hertingfordbury. I personally ride on road mainly and a bit of mountain biking. I do a bit of racing too. I just consider that there are a lot of people out there riding that may want to do something as a group. I think people can be intimidated by joining a cycle club as they think they all ride at 30mph everywhere and they couldn't keep up, which isn't true. I was just wondering if people would be interested in doing some easy rides?

I think what Steve was suggesting was that sometimes you have to throw in a catalyst to get the conversation going. For this reason, I often play devil's advocate by throwing in deliberately contentious points (not always representative of my own) to stimulate replies. Sometimes it takes a push. Talking of pushing, I know what you mean about pushing a bike on the pavement. People get jumpy, assuming you are going to catch their legs with pedals etc. Strangely, gigantic baby buggies are not treated with the same suspicion. I also agree with the cycle route theory, though not everywhere. Fore Street is prime, because of it's one way system and being the main route to Simon Balle School.

I did a nice circuit recently...from hertford go out through Bramfield to Datchworth. Turn right and head towards Green End. Down to Dane End and then back to Hertford via Stoneyhills (I think it's called). About 18 miles.

Where are these group rides going to be? I cannot see too many pedestrians being happy about being confronted by a large group of bycycles on a small public foot path even if it is part of a national cycle way? If they are on the road count me out, I am not a fan of fighting with the traffic.

Have you met the Hartham Commoners? They are a group runners and cyclists who meet up every Wednesday, all year round and run and cycle around the area and end up at the pub after their exhaustive outings. They are having their AGM at The White Horse, Hertford next Wednesday evening and then the winter season starts the following week. They will be at The Black Horse every Wednesday after about 9.30pm from then on. If you are interested in meeting them, please email me and I will let you have a name and a contact telephone number.

I suppose I am looking at the mountain bikers that already do a bit of riding and might want to go Bramfield Woods etc along Bridal Paths.

I agree that it would be fun, I am a mountain bike rider and enjoy riding away from the traffic. But how many people are you looking to get for this? I cannot see pedestrians out for a leisurly stroll being happy about 15-20 bikes racing towards them? You may have to consider getting permission to close said path off?

Why? If it were the other way round and I were to see an anorak of ramblers marching towards me, I'd be pretty intimidated, be it on my bike or on foot but I wouldn't have expected them to close the routes they were walking down.

Ha Ha! funny you should mention ramblers, I got a whole bunch of them starting on me about year back down cole green way. I agree with you Paul, but I still think it might cause havoc! Don't get me wrong I am not trying to spoil the fun, in fact I am interested in joining in. The problem is I am so used to pedestrians getting angry with me that I am now very wary!!

In my experience with group rides I have never really seen more than 10. I personally don't get problems with pedestrians or horse riders off road, I usually slow down smile and say hello.

Reply ID 25786

so do I! I smile and say hello/good morning to everyone I see every morning and every evening. I slow down/stop for children/dogs/pedestrians and even other cyclists. But I have still had ignorant people getting the hump with me. With the ramblers me and my otherhalf were behind them, I rang my bell about 3 times and they either did not hear me or ignored me. Then I said excuse me at least another 3 times, eventually one of them turned around and said "don't they have bells on bikes anymore". It took us an age to get past them and another few snide remarks along the way. I have also been told by one guy to "get on the road the tow path is not for cyclists". Funny thing is they don't seem to pick on my partner at all.......I think maybe being female people are more confident at having a dig, maybe they think I am less likely to retaliate and they are probably right.

Personally I am not up for the group stuff as I always take a camera with me and photgraph the wildlife on my runs. A good run is across Hartham then off towards Ware by the river, through Ware to Stanstead Abbotts on the tow path, then up the high street, and along the lanes back to Ware, up Ware high street and across to Warren Park, through to Bengeo, round to the church and down the path back to Hartham. A good mix of level and hilly cycling. But for me only worth doing during spring, summer, and autumn as the views and wildlife are at their best. Alternatively, across to Bengeo then Sacombe lane to the A602 and back along the Hertford Road B158? Winter time it's just around Hertford and Ware via the river[:)]

Sounds like me, flyer1 - cycling is never much good as a form of exercise for me as I end up stopping every five minutes to pull the binoculars out and have a butchers at something. I would agree, though - the circular route down the river to Stansted Abbots (with the obligatory stop at Amwell Quarry, of course) and back through the lanes around Ware and Bengeo is a lovely ride. Around the Sacombe Road area is lovely too, especially if a pint at the Woodman in Chapmore End can be incorporated... [:)]

Yes it is personal choice. I suppose my target audience is people who don't want to ride like the wind, but want to try something more than the tow-path and get into our beautiful countryside a bit more. I think that an hour to an hour and a half will be fine at a gentle pace.

He is right Nicky. You need a licence to cycle along a tow path and one of the stipulations is that you dismount and give priority to pedestrians. You would be amazed at the rules and regulations that come with a licence.

http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/waterways/waterways_code/for_cyclists.html The towpath is for cyclists; strictly speaking they should have a permit although in 20 years of cycling down the Lea Valley between Hertford and London and passing loads of wardens zipping along on their mopeds, I have never been asked for mine. Both Sustrans and British Waterways expect cyclists to give pedestrians right of way but I have never heard that we have to dismount for pedestrians on the towpath. Where did you read that, Rooster?

There was letter in the Mercury from a guy involved in the permit/licence issuing detailing the regulations, about three/four weeks ago. I suppose that dismounting to give priority to pedestrians and giving way to them amounts to the same thing, otherwise you would be in the water or the hedge surely, if the towpath is narrow!!

Reply ID 26086

I have a licence, and if the situation occurs (which it does rarely) where I meet a pedestrian at a point where a cycle is not able to pass, then I do dismount or at least stop and let the pedestrian go first.

I'm always up for cycling around here. I generally use a few routes south of Hertford, primarily off-road with the occasional bit of road to link the tracks - 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on pace....or longer if all the pubs are open! Going North can be a pain - I haven't yet worked out how to get from Bengeo to Sacombe without becoming roadkill under a lorry.... I can't make this weekend as I'm heading home to beautiful Yorkshire to cycle in the Moors - but following weekend sounds good to me...or any evenings before it get's too dark.

Cycle routes through town would be great, as would compulsory helmet wearing (I'm amazed how many children are wearing them while their parents are not). Clear maps that are grated according to ability - there's nothing worse than picking a brand new route and finding that you're so unfit that most of the time is spent pushing the bike uphill. Groups are a good idea and would say that they need to be graded - even including one for "not been on a bike since I was 17, got my driving license and oh-my-god I can't see my feet any more!" to which I would probably sign up to!

Reply ID 27572

06/10/2006 by bikeman

Mr P I think we do not have enough interest yet to split things it to grades. The plan is to have a ride on Sunday and ride as fast as the slowest rider. If you are not too fit I'd recommend riding along the towpath as this is flat. The helmet debate is something that will go on forever, but I suggest that the rider makes his/her own choice and is not forced to wear a helmet if they don't want to. There are many strong arguments for and against! There are ride guides available in WHSmith's that are graded. You may also be able to pick something up from the tourist information.

Just noticed this Andy... I've no idea about his pace. I've never cycled off-road or off-trail with him. If he does swear like a trooper, he hasn't done so in front of his mother! He has cycled off-road with friends of ours and with Harlow Outdoors Centre. I thought Bikeman's rides would be mostly road and trail? My bike is not a mountain bike, so would that rule me out? It's a hybrid touring bike.

a hybrid bike would be fine - yes it's all bridleways, very smooth, bit muddy in the odd place but nothing a 10yr old wont relish! So whens the next ride then?

You could try the other way and if you are feeling energetic, ride to Canary Wharf, the towpath is virtually empty, apart from fishermen, and its a nice scenic route. I tried Broxbourne to Bishops Stortford but the towpath was closed at Roydon. The towpath there was very narrow and a bit slippery.

Yes still on. Looks like you me and biker currently unless anyone else wants to join. The route will incorporate some quite muddy sections as there has been a lot of rain recently, so don't wear you Sunday best shoes. Waterproof socks may be useful but not necessary. Yes 9:30, the first part is up the Cole Green way to Letty Green so maybe you want to meet us on route or will you come to the bottlebank at Hartham?

What route do you take on a 50 mile ride? I moved to Bengeo last summer but my bike is still stuck in Enfield. Once i've got it up to Bengeo I'll defo. be up for riding somewhere. I usually spend my days in Epping Forest Mountain Biking and seeing as I've moved further away I'm looking for find some good riding around Hertford. I'm sure there is loads as I always see people out on their mountain bikes.

I run (winter) & cycle the rest of the year in and around Bramfield Woods. A good way of getting over there from Bengeo, mostly off road is to head down Sacombe Road, take any path down through Waterford Heath to Bullsmill. Then take the footpath after the farm that runs alongside the River Beane towards Stapleford Church. If anyone is walking towards you, it's best to dismount, as you are not supposed to cycle this bit. When you get to the Church, turn left onto the road & over the bridge. At the main road, cross & head up a steep path almost immediately opposite (gets very muddy here). The footpath signs disappear, but if you keep heading upwards, you should pick them up again. Follow the path to the main road (house on corner) & stay on road for about 800 metres with Row Wood on either side. (If you are quiet you will see a herd of about 20 deer in there sometimes). Take the first path on right & follow this up to Sally Rainbow's Dell & you are now in Bramfield Woods. When I ran up this stretch on Sunday, there was a puddle about a foot deep (great fun) & the mud was intense. You've got to be really keen to cycle this stretch in winter, but half the fun of mountain biking is finding new routes & overcoming obstacles, and their are plenty of alternative navigable paths in these woods. As I said earlier, I don't venture over here on 2 wheels until springtime, when the ground is much firmer, but it's a great place to go for all grades of rides & you don't have to wait for the weekend, you can get over there & back in about 1-2 hours in the evening once the clocks have gone forward. When you've got your bearings, you'll discover lots of other great routes from the Woods via Tewin, Burnham Green & Digswell too.

'When you've got your bearings,' is a moot point. [:)] It's like the bloody Blair Witch Project in there! [B)] I've tried to get back to Hertford from Watton through Bramfield Woods loads of times and always get horribly lost, usually ending up back where I started! [:I]

Come on Rachel, it's not that bad. As long as you are clear of the trees, Bengeo Water Tower can be seen from many places near Bramfield, so you can work out the general direction home following that. If you ever get lost in Bramfield Woods, just head for the former roadway (Perrywood Lane) where it crosses Back Lane. This used to be a shortcut from Bramfield Road (where the car park has been gated off) all the way down to Watton at Stone. Thankfully, the only motor vehicles you will see on it now are the occasional tractor & the odd rogue motor-biker. Head down the hill, passing open countryside on your right & Hazeldell Wood on your left (if you go on the parallel path called Long Walk, you've got a 75% chance of seeing a herd of deer in here too). Keep going downhill & over a stony bit to Perrywood Farm. After the farm buildings, take the first footpath on the right by the house. This leads virtually straight to Gobions Farm & the main road. Turn left onto the main road & it's all downhill to Stapleford. If you can afford to shell out about £10 for the Ordnance Survey County Street Atlas for Herts (they sell it in W.H Smiths), it will help you locate all the available bridlepaths & footpaths, though it's probably a bit bulky to take out with you when you are riding your bike.

Hi All In answer to a few of the questions. Biker the Sunday rides I have been doing have been fast ones. I will however be doing my first race this Sunday, the North Road Hardriders, which covers the area between Brookmans Park and Hertford, it comes down Brickendon Lane then turns left along the Essendon Road. So if you want to see some of the countries top time trialers then from about 9am to 10:30 they will be coming by, note Sean Yates ex Tour de France Yellow jersey holder is racing. I may be able to fit an off road ride in on Sunday 4th March if people are interested. Please post so I know if there is interest ASAP. It will be about an hour and half to 2 hours up to Watton and back via Bramfield Woods. Lets see if we can get a group going regularly even if I can't make it all the time. Regards, Bikeman.

Yes I went OK this morning not sure of my actual position yet. The rides tend to be relatively gentle. I'll probably have my son on the back and he doesn't like it too bumpy, which tends to happen when I go fast. It's just social pace.

Sorry to disappoint Joby, but I was running thru Bramfield Woods on Sunday 25th March & despite all the rain last week, nearly all the lovely mud has disappeared. In fact, the ground was so hard in places that I nearly turned my ankle, the only mud to speak of was in Barber's Close by Perrywood Lane.

Will be there, although may have to duck out part-way through the ride depending on time (I need to be back home by 12ish.)

Can't make Saturdays for a while - baby Joby has started "swimming" lessons on Saturday mornings. Would still be interested in any Sunday morning rides, though.

Hi, is anyone riding this weekend? I'm new to the area and would love to join in although I haven't cycled for a while so can't promise I'll be all that fast! Is that a problem? Oh and I take it girls are allowed....? [;)]

If any of you cyclists out there are offered any cycle lamps on the cheap, we have a group of our regulars who had theirs liberated outside the White Lion in Bengeo last Wednesday night whilst partaking of refreshments in the aforesaid public house. Many thanks. You can contact us through my profile, or direct at The Black Horse.

I've just bought a bike. I'd forgotten what great fun cycling is and enjoying feeling physically knackered through exercise rather than mentally through work. I've had a few rides out with my 10 year old son. He prefers the off road routes like the Cole Green Way and along the River Lea rather than roads. Can anyone recommend something mainly off road between 5-10 miles around Hertford. Now that Google Earth has all of Hertford and the surrounding areas in high definition, I'd be prepared to map out any cycle routes. I can either put them on my webspace or maybe admin will host them on here.

If you go back to page 9 of this thread you will see a post by 'Muddy' that describes a lovely off-road route taking in Bramfield Woods. Take a compass [:)]

Yes Bramfield and up to Datchworth if you see all the red line on the map they are bridal paths/ways that you can cycle on. Note you are not meant to cycle on footpaths. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=528500&y=216500&z=3&sv=528500,216500&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

Hello all Was just wondering if anyone fancies meeting up for a bike ride - perhaps out to Bramfield or Broxbourne Woods? Maybe this weekend or next sometime? Got to get some more riding in before the evil weather starts!!

Hi all, does anyone up for a bramfield ride or similar this weekend, preferably sunday? Via a pub if that gets more interest? :) Weather looks good - it'll probably be cold, but hopefully sunny and clear!
