Football Pub

I'm soon to be moving to Hertford. What's the best pub in the town to watch football and, in particular, the mighty Spurs?

Or White Lion, which is also v. good in other ways, footy not being my thing. Just follow the noise of shouted profanities and you'll easily identify which establishments have sky tv. he he

Try the Bridge House - The landlord is a Spurs supporter as well

The Lord Haig is run by Spurs landlord. The Ram seem to show all sports, and even Wine TV sometimes ;)

I think you are confusing Wine TV with the general level of whining that goes on when the football is on. If they show all sports, how come they have never shown intermediate shin spiking or combi sports such as Steeple Chase Golf? These are big hits on U.S. TV.

Does anyone have any information on which will be the first Hertford Pub to show sport in (HD) High Definition? Will it be worth watching after a few pints?

The Greeeeasy Spooooon is dead, the pub-football talk is dead, allll hope is dead. Dalek speak. "Your only hope is a huge loan, your only hope is a huge loan. Come, seek and speak to America. We will adopt you, we will adopt you, weeee willl adopt you. Exterminate, exterminate exterminate!!!!!!!!!!!!" Naaaa sorry Fish, Americanisms alone, keep yours away from Hertford thanks.

Oh Berb, you don't know what you're missing. Apparently there's a league forming (OK it's in Billericay, where else?) that is entirely British and is trying to involve people who would otherwise either not fully understand sport or not be interested in it in its purest form. Perhaps true afficiandos would find it a bit strange, but I quite like the idea of combining sports together. There was some talk about melding rugby with golf and cricket with polo. Sounds strange, but would make wonderful TV. [;)]

Amazingly I feel empathy with you. We suffered the same a few weeks ago, when I went to the Emirates Palace with a couple of pals for the first time to watch the ECL qualifier against Dynamo Zargreb, we even left the Tollington on Hornsey road an hour before kick off to soak up the atmosphere in the ground with a few beers, only to be told (once inside the ground) no beer on Euro nights!!!! What really p--sed us off was when watching the 1st ECL away game a couple of weeks later, seeing all the fans in their seats supping beer!!!!

Apparently it is a UEFA edict but it only applies to European games in England. I had a couple in the White Lion near Silver Street before the game (or maybe 6!!!) but I only wanted a beer at half time. My God, I am agreeing and bonding with a Gooner!!!

I like football, but being Scottish I get few opportunities to really enjoy the game. That's why it's so much fun to throw (big, heavy) bottles at Celtic supporters. Karmic resonance or something they call it. There are few places so bright as Glasgow in it's enlightenment. To stay on-topic, I generally don't like 'sports boozers'. Gawping at the telly is a feeble excuse for not manufacturing something inappropriate to say to your colleagues

Why would you throw bottles at Celtic supporters?

Because they are there...... It was a joke - kinda... Seriously, I come from a ridiculous line of West Coast Scottish presbyterian mental folk. Mercifully, my Dad married a Catholic (I call her Mummy) and we moved to England and I got, more or less, better.... To football. My first attended football match (aged 6) was a Rangers v Celtic game at Ibrox. My Dad stood with his arms over my head to shield me from the missiles. It was what they did 30 years ago.... I've been to 4 'Old Firm' games in my life and they are everything they are sold to be. Venomous. Bewildering. Exhillerating. It is impossible to stand amongst 50 thousand people passionately braying (about something which is so fundamentally meaningless) and not be affected by it. It's easy to make light of the sectarian nonsense that goes on in Glasgow and Western Scotland but I'm afraid it defines many peoples existence there. Enough!

I went to a Rangers V Tottenham friendly at the start of last season Herbert and your fans couldn't have been friendlier. We even went in a pub outside the ground that a copper had told us not to go in. We walked in and the whole pub went quiet but once they realised we were sort of normal, they were great. My most enjoyable moment which I will take to my grave is 50,000 people singing Land of Hope and Gloty. Wow!!!

(Momentarily back form the pub owing to washing machine installing event. It's an automatic washing machine but I still have to be here :o) - I just wanted to make that clear) Anyhoo, for the Scots it's all too easy to play the friendly pissed up 'see you Jimmy' monkey nonsense. It helps deal with the fact that Stephen Hawking is our best centre forward.

That wasn't a deliberate post. I dozed off and it was the cumulative effect of me banging my face off the keyboard.
