Rush Green Roundabout Priorty

Hello All, I wonder if people can help me out as I'm confused about the lanes on Rushgreen roundabout. If you come along Stanstead Road from Harlow there are two lanes as you approach Rush Green roundabout. Now, if you want to continue on Stanstead Road do you go into the left or the right lane. I know this sounds anal but the road isn't mark so I'm not sure. Cheers

Left-hand lane as Stanstead Road is second left off the roundabout.

But if you follow the A414 down to Hertford, the left land is left only?

That is because some crazy person who designed the road there thought this up off their own back [;)] It is quite unusual and I imagine if you don't know the area quite daunting when you have a person in the right-hand lane doing a left next to you! I would stick to the highway code unless signs tell you otherwise.

It could be argued that the second exit is straight over, in which case you can actually cross the roundabout in either lane, but if you are in the right lane, you must give way to the left lane when exiting.

I hate that bit of road! [:)] The worst bit is all the people who come tearing down the right lane, only to cut over to the left at the last second, when they could have stayed in the right lane all along. The one that confuses me is the A10 southbound slip road onto the rush green roundabout. If you are in the left lane on the slip road, is your only exit option to go back onto the A10?

I'm not familiar with this but it sounds about right for Hertford! [:I] I think the winner in Hertford is the M&S/Tesco roundabout. As you approach from Gascoyne Way the left-hand lane is marked 'any route' and the right-hand lane is marked 'A414 only', this means you can do a U-turn from the left-hand lane legally carving up those in the right-hand lane, pure organised choas! [:D]

Interesting take on the wording - I'd never thought of it like that [:D] I must admit, I never feel comfortable turning right in the left-hand lane of any roundabout, even if permitted. It just doesn't feel proper. Plus on Bluecoates roundabout, you'll always get someone trying to head straight over onto Ware Road in the right-hand lane.

I agree with you on this one. Quite often I come out of the Gascoyne Way multistorey and have to go right around the roundabout to get home. If you can't get into the right hand lane in the tiny stretch between the car park exit and the lights, it's very tricky indeed. Even if one does legitimitely use the right hand lane from GW to follow the A414 past the fire station, there is always some eejit who, despite the fact you are indicating left to come off the roundabout, cuts straight across from the Ware Road.

The lanes and strange road markings are presumably designed as the most efficient use of lanes and keep the queues as short as possible. It is just that there are some bloody minded idiots that must use the right hand lane if their exit lane is even slightly to the right, and will get into the right hand lane as early as possible (going at least 10MPH below the speed limit)

The trouble is these aren't really roundabouts anymore, they have become junctions, and the biggest problem is lane discipline. If road users followed the signs and moved across as they move round the junction, they work fine. What they don't take into account is impatient or users who are not familiar with the layout.

its the ware road exit towards ware that always confuses me on the gascoyne way roundabout. not much time to signal left and a strange angle. Always feel like im cutting someone up.

Yeah, the Ware road Exit is a nightmare. My biggest bug of all the Hertford roads is people who come down the hill in the right lane of the A414 London road to the Gascoyne/Bluecoats roundabout, enter the roundabout in the right hand lane, cross over to the left lane as soon as they pass the A414 turn, but instead of going into the town, they go all the way round to Ware Road, cutting up those who remained correctly in the right hand lane! Every morning there is a line of morons doing it, causing the good drivers who are moving over from the right to left lane to brake hard to avoid them.

Anyone reckon the person that designed the road layouts around Hertford was on some very hard drugs? :)

I notice that they are going to do "Safety Improvements" on the Hatfield Rounabout - presumably because the majority of Morons can't manage to use it correctly since they put in the lanes. Lots of people use the lanes for stanborough then cut across the roundabout and end up going on the A414 or even the A1000

To be fair, this junction doesn't function as most roundabouts and someone who doesn't know it, or knows it as it was, would be likely to try to follow normal disciplines, having to read lane directions and adapt as they negotiated it. It is very poorly designed and in need of safety improvements.

Some bits of it are virtually impossible to use correctly - try going from the A414 to Stanborough using the correct lanes and you have to spiral out at least 3 lanes within about 50 yards due to several sets of lights in quick succession as you get past the A1(M) southbound exit. There is always going to be a "clash of cultures" there between folk who us it the so-called correct way and folk who use it the most sensible way - the design of the roundabout has ensured that. It's a p*ss-poor roundabout, quite possibly the worst I have ever driven round, and I can't wait to see what they are going to do to improve it.

I agree that it is a joke - especially considering the "Safety Improvements" that haven't been there that long. It definitely needs to be made clearer - but what a waste of time and money in the first place. And there are still some morons that ignore all rules of roundabouts and road markings and try to turn right from the left hand lanes - sorry but there is no excuse at all for that.

Another accident on the roundabout today, between the A414 and Amwell Road side. 2 vehicles, but minimal damage.

Nah, he/she/it cut his/her/its teeth designing the blood and guts roundabout at Hatfield (A1 A6129) before deciding to wreak havoc here. He/she/it doesn't live in Hertford, travels to work via helicopter and spends his/her/its day watching the chaos on CCTV.
