I was talking to a small person today who said that he would like to see a cinema made on Hartham Common. I dispelled it at first, but after a tiny amount of thought, this might not have been such a poor suggestion from the boy. Now, I know that SL run the gym and swimming pool and that The Castle is running a few cinematic shows soon but how about a small cinema to compliment the town if Sainsbury opens? Weird thinking I know, but it could work, couldn't it? Blame it on the boy as he seemed up for the idea!

I refer you to my post on the Sainsburys thread: open up a road through the common between their new site & the A10, realise the Common for development - suitable architecture measures to deal with the flood plain in place etc. :) :) However, to battle with the Big Cinemas it would probably have to be a multiplex. I heard of a cinema ni the UK with small viewing rooms (same size screen/sound etc) that are kitted out with sofas, bean bags etc that can be hired per room. Now that's a niche market for big screen viewing that would be pretty viable.

The viability of cinema has been eroded somewhat by the availability and cheapness of home technology. My own TV screen is 9'x5'and supported by a massive sound system. Ironically, I rarely watch it. What I miss is the sense of occasion offered by cinemas. I've tried the multiplexes, but the atmosphere just isn't there. The old County, with it's worn affordable opulence, cigarette and ice cream girls, ushers and sofa strewn circle foyer, had a certain feel to it. Sadly I'm not sure we will ever re-create it, or even if we could, whether it would be used.

Ewoowar: Yes, was most certainly joking about the road and hope that the flood plain will forever prevent developers & road builders from digging it up. Shunt: I want your TV and hope that the surround system matches up to those in the cinema so I can watch LOTR 3 and get the volume so lound that the sound disappears into base. Watching the green blast of light erupt out of Minas Morgul is never the same at home. Mind you, we also have neigbours, share party walls/floors and it would be inappropriate and be termed as anti-social behaviour. When we win the lottery we'll build a personal cinema though I don't think Mrs P will allow me to hire an ice-cream girl (phwoar!)

quote:Built it myself for under a grand and yes, it does have "earthquake" bass. No, you can't all come round to watch your favourite sci-fi, because the whole thing sits in the 12' by 12' living room of a Victorian terrace. Curiously, all the other houses in the row are for sale.....[:I]

TV and videos killed off the old style of "flea pit" cinema. very few have managed to hang on. The Multiplexes have done better because they can show a range of films - and you can see what you want, when you want it. The problem is that the youth of Hertford and Ware now have very few venues accessible to them. I don't know what the answer is.

quote:I'd agree with you Jez. Although ironically, the best cinema I have been to in ages was in Barnstaple earlier this year. A 'proper' 1930's art deco affair now converted into 4 screens. Best of all, the film started when it was supposed to, without half an hour of crap adverts, 'there's just enough time to visit the concession (popcorn in English) counter', and assertions that video piracy funds everything from prostitution to Al Qaeda.
