If you were to start your night in town befor venturing out past the traffic lights what would your best pub crawl be please list and say what it is your looking for on your crawl ie entertainment,food,prices,real ale or what ever it is your wanting on your night out [:D]

On My 40th..The Bridge (nr Station..Seles arms then), OXT (great beer) White Horse (Great beer, Americans with us loved it)Black Horse (Great Beer) Hertford f.c (Football AND beer ..some good bottled ales) Black Horse (Check that the beer was as good as before) Curry

Was this your 40th pub crawl because it sounds very attractive to me. If it was your 40th birthday I most probably missed it carrying out research for my own 60th coming up next year. Research almost complete but ends up very similar - most probably include the Barge being on my doorstep, the Waterside being almost opposite, the Sung being non-smoking and serving a half decent real ale these days (nodding to staff who know who they are) but ending up at either one of the Horses as a)the black one always does excellent ales and b)the white one was where I first started boozing in Hertford back in the 1980's in the days of Mick Peck and Everards Old Original. On the other hand my professional duties take me into virtually every pub so wouldn't get very far or be very sober if I attempted to say 'good evening landlord a pint of your best ale please - and a half for my good lady' in every pub where I am known. Might try it one day. There ought to be an official Hertford Pub Crawl certified by each landlord and a special tie or scarf given to every lady or gentleman that drank a half pint in every pub over the course of one evening. Or is this very non-PC?

Its been discussed enough - I think the students (as students do) tried it a couple of years ago; but without the half pint option which led to several hitting the WH & expiring.. Obviously those of us of a more mature age Sloop would treat it as a Marothan not a sprint....!

I remember we made a monopoly pub crawl arround the town. The stations were curry/kebeb shops, I think Baroosh ended up being Mayfair.

Whilst studying at the then Hatfield Poly, those of us on the Balls Park campus i.e. the Hertford students, used to arrange a three legged pub crawl around the town - probably part of freshers week or something, I can't remember. The students had agreement to set up a table in each of the pubs they used because you had to get a token from each pub before heading back to the campus with the full set. First prize was probably more beer. The Ram, The Salisbury, The Lord Haig, The Dimsdale, The Duncombe, The White Horse, The Dolphin and many more were on the list. I do remember finding a colleague comatosed on the side of the London Road, having failed miserably to cross the dual carriageway. My partner and I flagged down a car and got him to hospital to have his stomach pumped. I'm sure the police loved the event.

It was certainly not an official event but when at Natwest Cheapside and an honory member of same once transferred to Princes street I was part of the team that won the Natwest pub crawl challenge. Ten pubs in two hours nine minutes and a few seconds. Seems a long time but you had to decipher a clue to find the pub that was at least a couple of hundred yards away from the one you was in and drink a pint (or two halves) in each one. Took us a little longer the second time as St Mary Axe realised one of our member knew all the pubs and followed us around so we had to take some very deep detours. Happy days[xx(][}:)]

The Bridge House, The Mill Stream, The Two Brewers, The Woolpack, The Salisbury & The Ram made for a convivial Saturday lunchtime/afternoon session recently, although I was lagging a bit by the time we reached the Ram. Maybe some non liquid refreshments should have been partaken of - bacon rolls would have been ideal!

A recent crawl for the benefit of my fellow workers featured an eclectic selection of establishments as follows; The Bridge House The Mill Stream No. 11 The Old Cross Tavern The White Horse The Salisbury Arms (The Blackbirds was closed) Baroosh! The Snug The route is mostly dictated by the fact that it starts from Hertford North Station. The Bridge House is therefore a convenient meeting place (that sounds a bit harsh, its actually quite a nice pub now) followed by the ‘back street’ ambience of the Mill Stream, where it’s nice to sit in the garden when it’s sunny. No. 11 is a bit barren in the early evening, but the Woolpack is a nice alternative. Around the corner to the OXT for a pint of Aspalls, then a casual stroll through the castle gardens to the White Horse. By now the ‘Real Ale’ crowd have had their taste buds satisfied and it’s time to move on to somewhere a bit more lively, via The Blackbirds or The Salisbury Arms. Baroosh is a must - I know it’s got it’s detractors, but it’s loud, lively and fun. The Snug lets you chill a smidgen and if your still up for it there’s the Duncombe Arms and The Stone House. Hertford - What a town!

In Ware and Hertford I have done the 30 pubs, half a pint in each, starting at the Old Bulls Head and ending in oblivion. I like the idea of the pub crawl quiz idea, is there anyone will to devise a set of clues for the Rugby club?

On Tuesday, 7th November, the Hertfordshire members of CAMRA are organising an Autumnal Pub Crawl entitled "Bringing in the Beers". It starts at 8 pm at The Black Horse, moving on to The White Horse at 8.45 pm, The Old Barge at 9.30 pm and then finishing up at the Old Cross Tavern at 10.15 pm. As soon as the real ales to be featured are known, I will post here. You do not have to be a CAMRA member to join us for the evening stroll around these Hertford pubs. Just turn up at any stage of the evening and enjoy some different real ales.

Thanks for the info Rooster but on my calculations given that it takes about 5 mins from the BH to the WH and about the same to the Barge from the WH I have about 35mins to sample the available selection. As you will gather from my previous post I am not in my prime anymore and cannot run betwen pubs and drink copiously of the landlord's offerings as freely as I used. Perhaps quality will have to bow to quantity and one pint in one pub will have to do. How does the song go - 'it takes all night to do what I used to do all night'. I look forward to Nov 7th with excitement - as does Mrs Sloop who has no idea where I will be taking her.
