Congestion Zone
I accept this is stretching the local bit... Anyhooo, 4 weeks ago I drove into London and for various reasons I forgot to pay my toll by the end of the following day. This somewhat disagreeably lays me down for 50 notes worth of fine - but hey, it was my mistake.
Fact is that 4 weeks later I've still received nothing approaching a demand for the fine and I'm beginning to wonder whether I've got away with it. Of course I realise I might be a little premature as the administration probably runs on geological timescales. So here I am wondering whether anyone else has been stung the same way or even managed to avoid it.

Though I was drunk for large large chunks of it, I worked in the City for 10 years so it's not an entirely unknown quantity. On this occasion I was going to Bloomsbury Square which sits very firmly in the zone.
150 quid! Ooh that hurts. I'd rather give it to a passing hobo.

It would have been cheaper if I'd taken a taxi there and back - though there is the added cost for enduring 'cabbie insight'.

I did the same thing about 8 days ago. I rang up on Wednesday and was told that if nothing had appeared on their computer system by Friday (yesterday), then there wouldn't be a charge. A month seems like a long time without hearing anything...

Mr Lemons, is the car registered in your name and at your address? If it's a leased vehicle then the leasing company are the registered keepers, they get the fine, they pay it and then - pass on the cost to you with a hefty admin charge slapped on top for their trouble. This can take a little while to go through.

No problem there Deveraux. One of the reasons for querying it in the beginning was that the guy I spoke to at TfL implied that not every non-payer gets caught and I wasn't sure whether it was wishful thinking on my part.
Being as I'd already earmarked that £50 I'll consider it a windfall and turn it into Guinness.

I did same thing a year or so ago - nothing! Shows how well their very expensive system works.

The cameras aren't 100% reliable
Which is why you have to be proactive and pay in advance - and this is also why you can't have a pre-pay scheme where you are automatically charged when you enter the zone.
(Also by making it difficult to pay they are increasing the number of fines that they can get)
But this is heading deep into off-topicshire and admin will be beating me with his big stick soon [;)]

I am now plenty of your calendar weeks later and still find myself a congestion charge levy defaulter virgin (eh?). Were it not for the fact that the reason I went there in the first place cost me a fortune then I'd begin to consider the possibility that I'd dreamt the whole thing. Especially dreamlike was the 25 stagnant minutes spent in Dalston. Zzzzzz...

If you have a company car, there is a scheme in place that automatically bills you whenever you enter the zone, so no need to worry about penalty's.....

No no HL, you travelled at light speed past Dalston if it only took 25 of our clock minutes, you were indeed fortunate.
