We are having a 10 day beer fest at the Old Barge starting 23rd November. We have got 25 real ales coming an they will be on our 8 hand pumps for 10 days. There is also a loyalty scheme where the 8th half or pint is free !! All are welcome. Si

Wasn't the quiz advertising a venue for a quiz? Advertising that beer is for sale (in a particular pub) is surely a different thing altogether?

It seems to me that "Advertising" events etc in pubs which have names of animals with four legs is ok, but not in any of the others.

I'm afraid that appears to be a knock at pubs that put on more than - come to us, we sell beer - nights. Good on the four legged Bridge House, Baroosh, Blackbirds etc that put on something additional for the punters to enjoy. I believe that CAMRA have a good website to advertise beer festivals. You could try there maybe?

I am not objecting to Pubs or any other Business advertising and aplogise if I have offended. It is just the fact of an almost identical posting by many people each week. I'm sure the Quiz Night and Open Mic Night are great. Some shops are OK with promotions whilst others are not. Where should the line be drawn? A seperate thread for advertising events may be a good idea - a lot more work for Admin I'm sure, but maybe worth a thought.

Well I never expected the spanish inquisition. As we were doing something different at the barge I thought it would be relavent information for people on this forum to know about. We have been giving away free stuff and many of the beers are a lot cheaper than we would normally sell them, therefore, offering something to the pub going Hertford community. As this action seems to have set some sort of 'where do you draw the line' discussion going, I will refrain from posting any information about the Barge on this forum, lest I upset. Thanks to those who supported us, by the way. Rooster - if I come across any spirit of the forest in future, I will be sure to let you know. Si

Thanks Cardinal Fang (the others were Biggles and Ximinez for any quiz freaks) Seriously, I have no problem with this information being put on the forum and good luck with the festival. What I have a problem with is people who gripe about other 'adverts' for events and then advertise something else themselves.

Dobbin and I went to the Barge on Tuesday evening and enjoyed a few pints (and halves) of unusual ales. Good on you Si and Sal. Dobbin is not quite used to the strength of the Black Bat (his freebie) on a weekday evening and ended up having a very early night. Bless!!! We hope that the rest of the week goes well for you, and thanks for the promise of the Spirit of the Forest. I will look forward to it. Is it as good as the Trade Winds and Dark Island? If you do find some carol singers let us know, we may be interested in joining the carol singing ale trail so to speak. All the best from a four legged pub at the other end of town.

First well done to Simon & Sally for the beer festival - some excellent Ales on show - may will it continue. At the same time a thank you to Dobbin & Rooster, & Nigel (WH 4-legged beast) & Bev (no 4-legged beast involved as far as we are aware) for over the years providing us with similarly excellent beer & festivals. This is not an advert. Its a genuine personal view on 4 establishments Hertford, particularly its Ale drinkers, are lucky to have. We aren’t talking astro-physics here (definition of said may be worthwhile for a pub quiz methinks). Its fairly straightforward to spot a “coming up soon ” or “appreciation” of an event against a whistle & bells, full in your face advert…. Or am I being too simplistic here…….? Maybe to use a term I have been known to in my “real job” we should all CTC!
