Open mic at The Bridge House

For thursday's you are probably right Sheila. But come down to the Sele Arms every other Monday and you will here not only guitars but banjos, mandolins, flutes, whistles, melodica, xaphoon and anything else anyone cares to bring down. Stuff played tends to be on the roots side e.g Steve Earle, Pogues as well as the odd bit of rock.
The next session for the Sele Arms is Monday 27th. And everyone really IS welcome!

That is also the case at The Open Mic, including keyboards, banjos, mandolins etc. Space has prohibited the use of many additional instruments due to the large number of performers attending and the need to be able to rig microphones, fold-back amp, mixers and the PA system.
Is the Bridge House more like the folk nights that used to be at The White Horse before moving to The Hertford Club/Great Eastern?

Given the recent changes at The Bridge House/Sele Arms is anyone sure that this session (what ever format it takes) will be on at all. I don't think the 'recommendations' thread re this pub would attract many people?

Yes oops I meant the Bridge House. Yes Shiela this session is on next Monday - the last session attracted quite a few.
The Ram thing sound great but a diffent thing...
All the instruments at the Bridge House are acoustic. We don't need mics/foldback/mixers a PA or anything else that gets in the way - this is straight from performance to audience as it were where nothing gets 'enhanced' by electronics. In fact its hard to tell who are the performers and audience sometimes as there is quite a bit of participation sometimes.
One question.. is all the foldback and mixers necessary at the Ram... I thought all that stuff was so you could hear yourself as you faced the crowd in Hammy Odeon?

It sounds like a good time at The Bridge House, a bit similar to what used to go on at The White Horse.
We have experimented with totally unplugged nights in the past at other venues, but found that whilst all the performers and participants enjoyed the hoolie, there would always be others that felt excluded by it. Plus we also had some 'performers' who wanted to do nothing more than chip in on other people's turns and spoil them. It's one thing to jam along when you have pretty much the right idea of what's be played (key, phrasing etc, and quite another to go spirialing off. Afterall, it takes a lot of guts for some people to be able to play and sing in public and the last thing they want is someone messing about and putting them off.
Anyway - hence the equipment which gives the event more of a 'performance' feel. It sounds like a lot of stuff for a little place, but it enhances the overall quality of sound and gives the performer the ability to hear what he/she's doing. Obviously completely different to what goes on at The Bridge House.
Nevertheless, we may come down one Monday with a couple of others and give the place a go - all live music is good music, whatever your taste and ability.
Good luck at The Bridge House, meanwhile if you want to come along to The Ram on Thursday you will be made very welcome. Everyone joins in with the singing and heckling!
