Elbert Wurlings

Went there tonight at 10PM with 4 guys. Told no men being let in. They then let in 2 guys and I said "funny looking women" to which I got a nasty response and we left As a result Elberts have lost a large birthday party and 2 christmas parties.

Might be some knee jerk response to the 'Bloodshed at Baroosh' (see Mercury) but I would consider it to be sex discrimination never the less. From the CAB website: "It is unlawful for anyone providing goods, facilities or services to discriminate on grounds of sex by refusing to provide them, or to discriminate in the way in which they are provided. This is irrespective of whether the goods, services or facilities are provided for payment or free". I guess Elberts would count as a facility/service?

Any pub can turn away/refuse to serve, anybody, without reason being given....sorry! Not that im suggesting for one moment that its good for business, as we have seen above! In my experience, its better just to walk away thinking "oh! well Their loss![8D]

Leo A good point well made. The "staff" at Elberts have real issues, particularly the girl on the door who has the personality of a breezeblock and a bouncer with "little man" syndrome. If I was the proprietor I would be worried. A closed hotel bringing in no cash until 2007(If the rumours are true) and an empty nightclub turning away business. I really hope for his sake that he does not have heavy borrowings in a rising interest rate environment! The staff dont realise that they are on a path to being layed off acting the way they are.

Agreed Mick - but they gave a reason and IMO to be specifically told 'no men' rather than 'you' is discrimination. There are exceptions in the case of private clubs but Elberts ain't that. C'mon Mercury - here's a story!

Elbert's door policy has always been a complete mystery since it opened. It was suggested that, to be sure of getting in, you should email and ask to be put on a guest list. When you do, they don't reply. I have generally been welcomed, but just when I got started to get used to being able to come and go as I wish, I'd be unexplicably turned away. Of course it sod's law that it was always when with a "hot date". The only sure fire way of getting in, seems to be to turn up like a pimp with half a dozen partially dressed girlies. Eventually I got sick of being occasionally embarrassed and humiliated and stopped going altogether.

OLD CROSS - i know it is very frustrating not to get into a club, BUT saying that it is as equally frustrating going to a club, paying your entrance fee... then finding out it's full of men. Im a single male and not always out to pull but even so, a clubs atmosphere is better when the sexes are equally mixed. It is the job of a door host to get that balance right, other wise the people who do get in may not want to come back. A door host has to decide what type of people are in the club and what type of people want to get in .... if your outside and match to balance the inside then you will probably get in .. if not then un lucky this time i guess. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ????? making fun of a doorman and wonder why he gets pissed off and wont let you in ... i agree i have met some very aggresive doorman, but you know what ... they put themselves at very very high risk, if word gets out they are soft, it could potentially attract thugs who want a brawl, as they have heard the doorman are soft. Who said the club is empty ?? plus they could be numerous reasons as to why 2 other blokes still got in after you, dont be to quick to judge and you wont get disapointed. I think your judgements are harsh - 'Personallity of a breeze block' and 'little man syndrome' ... labels and judgements cause wars !!

Agreed. However, Elbert's door policy is more obscure than that. I avoid it even when in a mixed sex "couple" as being turned away seems equally as likely and (especially if on a date) the last thing a guy wants is to be barred entrance. There's only so many times I'm prepared to say, "Hey, lets go to Wurlings?", walk round there only to be turned away, before I lose patience with it's unwelcoming door. I liked Wurlings enough to have intended to make it my regular haunt for business and social entertaining, as well as for numerous functions over the last few years. Unfortunately, they've embarrassed me so many times in front of guests that I have felt confident enough to give them the business and eventually abandoned it altogether.
