Following on from discussions that have cropped up in other threads, please be careful not post post libellous or defamatory statements. If you make a claim that is false or could damage someone's reputation, Discover Hertford Online (as publisher of that statement) could be liable.

I feel that Aubend is being personal and Defamatory towards me on the Gypsies and Travelers thread. Aubend is a new user and I am not sure they have read this thread. Can you email them this please as I am finding there comments offensive.

Unfortunately Sister the subject is an extremely emotive. However, as you were directly criticised over your spelling I might just point out that Aubends spelling is not all that hot either [;)]

I know this thread is over four years old but the subject is still a pertinent one. A joint parliamentary committee of MPs has just issued a report on the issue of the liability of websites for alleged libel. The report's recommendations relate directly to forums and websites such as Discover Hertford Online.

Hopefully, should the occasion ever arise, you know or are able to discover the identity of all contributors and can defer liability. Sites like Pistonheads, with an international and highly gladitorial membership, could be in real trouble.
My own view is that defamation, slander, libel and (though only loosely connected as a crime of misrepresentation) perjury should all be reviewed. As things stand, it is too complicated and expensive for a private individual to take action on defamation and judges and police just ignore perjury. Slander and libel are slightly easier cases to bring when there is media publication of the slur.
It matters particularly because so many of us are self-employed and rely on our public image. Quite apart from the legal aspects, what about such concepts as fairness, kindness and social responsibility? An unfounded rumour, or just a false impression, even one which is not connected to a trade, can ruin careers and reputations for decades.
