Oh, I didn't realise this was an old thread [:I] When I saw it, I anxiously checked the Marquee website as I am going to see Rat:Att:Agg tonight [:)] They are supporting an Aussie band, Damn Arms. The Marquee club is well established on the so-called 'toilet tour' of small venues in the UK and several times a week brings visiting artists to Hertford, which can only be good for the town (although the Snug seems to get most of the businesss, from what I can see! [8D])

Just shamlessly advertising but if any of you are Clash fans - come down the marquee this saturday 3rd feb and see my Clash tribute CLASH CITY ROCKERS (formerly The Trash). We've got 2 young ska punk bands and a great punk/new wave covers band called The Informers supporting!! Oh go on. Please. love Kev

Air Traffic and Ghosts are playing tonight. Both of them are in the BBC top ten talent list for 2007. I'm looking forward to seeing Ghosts particularly.

Hope Admin won't remove this, as the info is on the Marquee site and Ask Watson but I'm just bumping this to let forum members know about a night many of you might enjoy tonight. I'm guessing that a lot of forum members were young in the 1970s and 80s? And maybe don't go to gigs very often now to hear new music? Well make an exception tonight. You will recognise many of the influences of Grace and Clocks, the co-headlining touring bands - influences like Bowie, Small Faces and REM. One of them, Grace, had a single in the Sunday Times Top 40 best singles of 2006. The cost conscious among you may balk at the £6 admission but there are cheap drinks promotions. Go on, live dangerously, come out on a school night! And if you come up to me and mention this post, I'll buy you a drink. [:)] I can't say fairer than that, can I? [8D] The first band, Stubbs, on at 8PM, are a great young local band, average age 17. Here's the blurb about the headliners from the promoter's website: Grace - Along with Clocks they head out on a co headline tour. The great thing about Hertford Marquee is that it's proved that if you spend all your time on something you really believe is worthwhile and that you hope everyone will enjoy and you're convinced that doing something because it should be done will bring its own rewards - is crap. You just get screwed and sit in the place you made happen without enough money to buy a drink. So to all the people who've emailed me to say they didn't feel comfortable there, I'd like to say, me too

Kev, do people give their reasons when they EMail you for feeling 'uncomfortable' ? I've never felt that even being a tiny, quiet, retiring girle (and getting on a bit to boot)

I'm a tough old bird and have never felt uncomfortable in the Marquee. Most of the staff are lovely. [:)] Some however are not. I was there recently with my son and his girlfriend, both over 18 but g/f had forgotten her ID. She was therefore refused an alcoholic drink. I've no problem with that but what I didn't like was the sneering and nasty attitude displayed to her and my son by some of the staff. A bit too 'punk' for a role serving the public! Oh dear, I'm getting old! [xx(] Anyway, that is nothing compared to my major gripe with the Marquee, which is that they refuse to give out free drinking water. Most clubs provide free tap water on request, even the much-maligned Zeros. In the Junction (Cambridge) and in most London venues I go to, a small supply of plastic glasses of water are kept on the side of the bar for dehydrated moshers to help themselves to. On some nights, children as young as 14 are welcomed into the Marquee. They have to pay to get in and I think it is appalling that if they want water, they have to pay £1.50 for a small bottle. Lots of the kids are dancing and moshing and getting hot and sweaty and I feel the Marquee is not going to lose a lot of profit by making tapwater available to help prevent dehydration, especially given the fact that punters have PAID to get in. I took this up with one of the owners of the Marquee who was happy to listen to my point of view. He pointed out however that he is running a business to make a profit and if people are stupid enough to let their kids go out for the night with insufficient money in their pockets to buy themselves soft drinks, that is hardly his fault. He was adamant that the 'no free tap water' policy would stay, on the grounds that providing free tapwater would erode the club's profits and maybe threaten its viability. I don't believe this. Sure, a few quid might be lost but hardly a fortune and what about the goodwill and positive feedback generated by displaying a more community-minded approach? Might that not get more people through the door? Certainly this episode has made me remove the Marquee from my list of venues to hire for a future event. I am so disappointed that a club I have supported since it opened has such an unhelpful attitude. I don't know why I'm so surprised, after all, the Marquee is just a business, not a community-owned facility. I suppose I so wanted it to be a bit different. It's like being let down by a friend [V]
