Sometimes on these threads it seems that if humour is used in an attempt to lighten a subject, all hell then breaks loose, with people getting very upset by what are clearly toungue in cheek comments. Anyone got anything to say about that?

This is probably not going to be a shock - but I agree with you Mick. I accept that some people (ok me) take levity a bit too far at times and it must be a teensy bit annoying when others are apparently making light of your pet subject. Fact is that many and most of the things that we individually hold in reverence, have the piss feverishly taken out of them by others all the time - whether it's on a forum,in the boozer, at work, in the Mercury etc.

What YOU Might think is humourous might not be seen as humourous to other people. In addition, it is well known that the use of humour in text based media such as email and discussion forums can be dangerous as there are no non-verbal indicators such as tone of voice or facial expression. This is why emoticons were invented. Try Googling "netiquette".

One person's humour is another person's sarcasm... I think there is a time to have fun, but some of the Forum entries are serious and worthy of discussion as people who enter them are looking for other sensible viewpoints, not just some sarcastic ***t sending them up. We can all do that, the art is being funny and other people thinking you are funny too... not easy on email.... I also find, maybe some will agree with me, that certain "Forum Members" seem to be sarcastic about everything and enter nothing real to any discussion funny or serious.. you know who you are...

I dont know who you mean? I dont look at this forum thinking that im watching newsnight, I look at it as an informal exchange of views not the houses of parliament (where, by the way, they do have a laugh aswell) I think that a lot of people are guilty of taking this forum WAY to seriously. I may have an idea who you are refering to and to say that they (we) never enter anything serious is a HUGE overstatement of the facts. We all find different things important and unimportant, what some people need to to is accept that!

Does hertford take itself too seriously? Sorry, the answer has to be the hated "yes and no". Sometimes it can get very serious over trivia or misinformed hearsay. At other times it just glosses over issues which really deserve much more serious consideration, or it accepts, without arguement, things that really deserve to be challenged. Conservatism, with both a small and capital "C", frowns on getting upset about big issues or disagreeing with establishment (somehow it's just not cricket), but encourages petty condemnation of small social errors. Safer somehow.

I agree with a lot of what Shunt says. I like humour, but sometimes it just seems people log onto the site, not to find things out or ask questions, but just generally to be sarcastic to other Forum members who have posted items here. That's just my view, maybe I am looking at the Forum differently from Mad Mick, but I thought Hertford.net was supposed to be a reference and information point as well as somewhere to discuss related topics... without getting too bogged down in "politics"

This is a forum - a platform which is intended to solicit varied, broad and often largely incompatible opinions. To me this is good because I would rarely hear many of the beliefs that are expressed here - even if I think most of them are shi..... Just kidding [cough].

Right well looking back it would appear that i obviosly havnt been on here since the 9th or 10th! James 007 I have to aggree with you! this isnt work! I work on the supposition that people arnt being "nasty" to me (or others) however when the opposite proves to be true others should not be surprised by a less than friendly response! It isn't work, but for many it is a voice. I rather enjoy a heated debate and though I often strongly disagree with the opinions posted, I wouldn't want to deny myself the opportunity of hearing them. People do get worked up about unimportant things and venting that anger (offering it for ridicule), helps put subjects into perspective for both the instigator and those who otherwise might hear only one side. My way of drawing attention to BS is to argue as if it were vitally important and I do so in a deadpan style, though I'm often rolling about with laughter here. Not everything that sounds serious is.

I think the trouble with our Forum is that some people want to convey some funny or humerous things that happen or occur in hertford, others have a more serious need to discuss something that might be quite close to their hearts and something quite emotive. As mentioned, its very difficult in text form to convey emotions and emoticons don't really convey true feelings. And the other thing is sometimes i get out on the wrong side of bed and take things badly!!!! But today am okay.. its Friday!!!

Oh thank you God that this forum is so varied. The variety of topics is very good with a very wide range of comments, advice and information; serious stuff and frivolous stuff too. By comparison, the Ware forum is dull, dull and duller. It's bland and seems to possess no depth or soul. I would hate to see this forum become as bland and dreary. Does Hertford take itself too seriously? Yeah - of course it does, or perhaps - yeah of course some people do, just like any participants in any discussion/argument. At least no one gets physically clouted.

Is the question "Does Hertford take itself too seriously" or "do Hertford Online contributors take themselves too seriously?" Answers on a postcard.... or actually on-line The Forum gives a lot of people in Hertford (plus a few ex-pats from places such as ermmm... Reading) to make their views known and they have the right to be as covert or anonymous as they wish. The problem is of course that, as previously mentioned, one person’s humor is another person’s insult .Without getting into totally boring pysco-whatsit most human communication comes from tonalality of voice & body language. Admin assures me that these will not be available in the Forum for a few months yet…. I suppose that the easiest way to overcome this is to get to know other Forum members face to face but this defeats the object for those who prefer to visit from the PC or laptop. And that is the great thing about this medium – everyone can contribute. Not just Herbert & I down the pub…

In answer to your question; yes, some people do take it a bit seriously, administration being one of those. I posted recently suggesting that children should walk to a swimming pool. This was in response to a poster who felt that children walking in the rain was not appropriate. If this is a source for people from around the world to gauge the feeling in Hertford, then I pity anyone who wants to come here. Australian's have kids actively walking to school and participating in sport with the notion that 'we are on the way to win'. Kids should be able to walk, regardless of a few spots of rain. Maybe I should put my common sense elsewhere.

Being "fired up" normally leads to the use of excessive punctuation, such as !!!!! and ****, not a lack of it, in my experience. Lack of punctuation from myself is normaly caused by being "tanked up".

This forum takes itself seriously and that's a good thing. For some reason fate has conspired and given this wee town a platform which has evolved into the chimp-exchange that it is. Most towns don't enjoy this privelage.. Yes it's easy to take an instant dislike to contributors because their attention doesn't quite coincide with your momentary rancour... Indeed, I remember standing in the queue in Boots - I was chewing my face because I'd just got a parking ticket at the same time as the guy behind me was rubbing himself into a £250 win on a sratchcard. I was sooo insensed that I came home and posted all manner of unhelpful remarks in this forum. Naturally most of them were deleted but at least I didn't get caught for stealing his bloody scratchcard. In summary, I think my opinion is that Hertford doesn't get a chance to take itself too seriously because it's aware that Cheshunt is getting too close.
