I notice in this week's Mercury that HCC have posted a notice that the A414 from about the A919 Cross Lane to Thieves Lane will be closed for 19 weeks sometime between 28th Dec 2006 to 30 May 2008 (yes they said 2008). They will be carrying out carriageway maintenance.

Surely they can't shut off both carrigeways at the same time? How will the residents of Campfield Road, Willowmead, etc get in & out?

So how is Thieves Lane supposed to accomodate the volume of traffic normally supported by the dual carriageway? I wonder if Hertfordshire Highways have done any research to determine the level of disruption this will have on the affected and surrounding roads. To me it sounds like a recipe for major congestion not only in Hertford but for miles around.

Surely it is possible to say, for instance, close the westbound carriageway whilst repairs are carried out, and make the eastbound carriageway two-way, ie a contraflow. They do it on motorways all the time. Then, obviously, when the repairs have been carried out on one carriageway, reverse the contraflow. O.K. It's not going to be perfect, and local residents will know of the alternative routes, i.e. through Sele Farm, but surely it's better than shoving all the traffic on the suggested diversion route? Perhaps I'm missing something?

17 months? Are you sure? Should it not be Dec 2007? [/quote] The road will be closed for up to 19 weeks sometime during that 17 month period and according to the notice in the Mercury, signs will be placed on the road telling us exactly when the closure will happen. An average of 35 000 vehicles a day use that stretch of road [xx(] and it is the only east-west route in this part of Herts, so it will be a very difficult closure to manage as Steve points out and I wonder why Buzz's sensible suggestion hasn't been chosen.

The notice doesn't actually say the road will be closed continuously for 19 weeks - just when the signs are in place. It could be a series of overnight closures.

I phoned HCC this morning. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a guy who knew nothing about the planned work. He spoke to several other departments who also knew nothing. Eventually I got cut off and didn't bother to call back.

I contacted Highways regarding this and apart from the typo (2008), there isn't going to be a road closure as such. Firstly the main works (19 weeks of road maintenance) are due to start in April 2007 and will close the road (Campfield Road/Willowmead roundabout up to Hertfingfordbury roundabout, both ways except for access) between 1930hrs and 0630hrs and traffic will be diverted up Thieves Lane, along Welwyn Road/North Road etc. The works in December are emergency road repairs which will have the same time contraints (ie night work). These will only last a short time apparently but will affect the road from Cross Lane roundabout up to Hertingfordbury roundabout. Work will be carried out on the Cross Lane stretch as well although he couldn't tell me exactly when. The guy I spoke to is called Silence Musingarabwi and he is the officer in charge of the project. He works for Herts Highways and was very apologetic for the 'typo' and the lack of information in the statuatory notice. For anyone concerned, his number is 01707 356297. Good day to you.

Nice one James, thank you. [:)] Very useful info for those of us who live nearby and will be affected by this work. It will be nice to get those terrible pot-holes near the railway bridge/Esso garage filled in.
