The Blackbirds
The Blackbirds has a sign on the outside which says something like "Premises formerly known as The Blackbirds".
Does anyone think it should change the sign to "Premises formerly known as The Blackbrids before it was known as The Fledgling & Firkin and changed back to The Blackbirds"?
It would avoid any confusion to a stupid person.

It was also previously known as The Magpie before it was The Blackbirds, but that's going back a bit!

I'm sure there's another sign that read "Premises currently known to most 15 yr olds as somewhere where they can buy alcohol"
Can't be doing with the place. No chairs

I miss the late 80's.. bring me back pubs not masquerading as nightclubs, where I can buy a beer or drink without being frisked by some overly obsessive, amourous bouncer who thinks he's Vin Diesel in his spare time.. In my youth the thought of waiting for 40 mins in the rain to get into a pub for a drink was the sign of a bad night out!!! Why do we put up with it? Lets ban the bouncers!

I would like to say, as a regular of the Blackbirds, that is probably the best pub in town for people my age (19). Not only is it cheap to buy drinks, but it has a great atmosphere that lacks the attitude of many other places in the town (ie, the White Hart). I admit that queueing for up to an hour on a Friday night is slighty excessive for what is essentially just a pub; but you know that once you are in you're guaranteed a good time. As for James' comment about it being a place for 15 year olds to drink - I dont think so! I get ID'd almost every time I go in there and I have friends who are blatantly over 18 get turned away because they did not have any. The other night they were IDing at both the front door and again at the bar!

James was right about the underage drinkers, I've seen kids whom I know to be 15 and 16 in the Blackbirds. Not recently though and the pub seems to have got a lot stricter on ID as tbfh says, in fact last week a couple of young regulars got turned away for not being able to produce ID. So looks like there's been a change of attitude by the management there, which is commendable.
Bouncers I've always understood to be a Good Thing, Drama Queen, in terms of discouraging trouble and controlling numbers for fire/health and safety reasons. (some of them are, ahem, quite fit too! in fact, where exactly is it that I can get a good frisking?!) There are of course plenty of queue-free and bouncer-free choices in Hertford even on Friday and Saturday nights. Having said that, the only really scary violence I've ever been an eyewitness to in Hertford occured about a year ago in what I thought was a sleepy little backstreet pub The Great Eastern Tavern near Hertford East station! Someone got beaten up over a drug debt, it was horrible, and the victim wouldn't involve the police.

I would certainly say that the Blackbirds as it is, is much better than when I first went there just over 10 years ago!
