It depends where you are. Quite a large part of the town can't get it; there seems to be a correlation with being able to get Channel 5, so that might give you some idea. There are web-sites you can put your post-code into to find out what digital access you have.

You might try [url]http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/coverage.html[/url] and see what it says for your postcode. Its not an exact science though given the valley location of Hertford. If your aerial is pointing at Bengeo water tower, forget it (the Channel 5 connection as pointed out by Kate). Your aerial needs to be pointing at Crystal Palace or Sandy Heath. Have you any neighbours who have it to compare notes?

Have you tried dealing with their "customer service"? They haven't updated their postcode database in over 10 years. There are NTL customers in Hertford town centre with 01920 telephone numbers (and no, they haven't moved from Ware!). Time and again they come at the bottom of consumer surveys on customer service. They don't reply to letters, they don't return phone calls. They even knock on my door to repair my NTL service when I don't even have one! Sorry, I'll stop now! Another option is FreeSat, which effectively gives you Freeview with a satellite dish for a one-off fee of around £150. Whilst this still involves having a dish, it mean you're not committed to a monthly fee. I can't vouch for this as I don't have it, I've just looked into it as a future option.

It is possible to get freeview almost everywhere in hertford with the right kind of wideband aeriel, even right up in bengeo.

The Astra (Sky) satellites carries most, if not all, of the freeview digital channels which are available elsewhere - even some freeview HD ones. You can pick up receivers on eBay for about 30-40 quid. You can even get free-standing, tripod-mounted dishes now that just stand a few feet above the ground, so if your garden has line-of-sight to the satellite (just a few degrees off due south and a few up from the horizon) then you don't even need to mount it on the side of your house. You'd need a signal meter to line it up properly, but that's about a tenner or so. None of the above would require any sort of subscription (apart from the normal TV licence).

We had digital TV in Bengeo. We had to buy a new aerial. It cost about £70 including fitting.

I've gone all satellite don't you know. Nonetheless, 18 hours of pouring beer-shaped poison into my face (to make me more handsome and interesting by way of seeing in 2007) and what does BBC1 serve me when I wake up? "Keeping Up Appearances"! Keeping f&$%*ng Up Appearances.. Hyacinth Bucket (Boookay) and her hillarious send-up of suburban inverted snobbery. Now I'm normally enthusiastic about our national broadcaster in all her lumbering augustness but when I saw that I made a venomous bark-fart-sneeze like noise. It makes my investment in Sky + and a 40" HDTV telly all the more worthwhile. My TV license is due for renewal in February and it's in danger of being forfeited. Television! Chuh. I pay to have my programmes beamed from space and they're still sh*te. Strictly Come Dancing?! I'm an Evolved Anthropoid , Get Me Out of Here!?? It all started with John Logie Baird gibbering the alphabet and it's been rubbish ever since. Happy New Year by the way :o)

I agree and much of the time is spent flicking through channels simply to see if something better is on the next one. It seems the more channels one has the greater the need to "hop" to the next. The thinner the jam is spread the less the taste, I once remember hearing. Perhaps we should return to the time when TV was only allowed on for certain programmes and then switched off? Or perhaps a return to listening to the radio with seemingly greater choices on digital or so we're led to believe. In reality we are in and age when TV is mere "background activity" with us dipping our interest into whatever appeals to us as and when it catches our eyes. Perhaps Sky will next offer a channel changer working continously until we grab the remote and hit "View"?
