or a pub of a similar name, I have an inkling it might have been somewhere near Hartham but I can't think where. It is another of my family history related questions I need answering

You can still see the derelict building. It was the Macs "Brewerry Tap". It's across the raod from the recycling area (south side of Hartham Lane).

Many thanks for that, looks like 3x Gt Grandad died there in 1860 as his daughter and her husbands were the licensees. Just got his certificate in the post today so very apt that you did the photo for me.

Unicorns! - Apparently mythical gods-donkey-things. Ebay tells me they are renowned for having big horns. I've never seen one but I feel I share a feature. Nonetheless, Mac's shut the pub whereas "The Ram" persists [please see other forum typed thingys). Baroosh was the Greek god of donkey rides, don't you know.

In 1861 it was the sister of my 2xgt grandfather who was living there with her husband and family, he is listed as a Beer Seller and shoemaker.....now that's something you would not see going on in the same building these days!

My husbands, Uncle Alf (Pearson)and his wife Joan was the last landlord/lady before it closed, it was a bit of a dive! he also ran The Bell and Crown which is now houses in Cowbridge and also the Millstream

what i remember of the unicorn pub as a kid, was that it had a steady local trade ie folly island residents, but also it became possably the buissyest pub in hertford when the hertford day, fair days and bank holidays,,were on hartham,,talk about getting into the pub, you had a job getting past it, that little road would be jam-packed ladies waiting for their stout, men wanting their brown ales, and if lucky, the kids waiting for lemonade and SMIFFS crisps, then in the 1960 is onwards it became as it is today, a backwater sadly forgotten

I expect the Unicorn is about to become part of the Sainsburys car park. It looks about 150 years old. Has preserving it ever been a consideration?

Hi there, I realise this post is from a few years a go now but i just came across it whilst doing a family search on the internet. My Grandad was Alf Pearson, does that mean your husbands Mum was my Grandad's sister? If so i would love to get in touch some time, i know so little about that side of the family.
