I see that signs have gone up at the old Methuens site for M&Co. Their website is: http://www.mandco.com/ Apparently it's a rebranded Mackeys whose mission statement is: "To offer customers an exciting shopping experience, offering high quality, value-for-money fashion for all the family.'" Looking at their website, it looks like they have concentrated on Ladies and children but are now starting a range for men. A welcome addition to Hertford or unwelcome competition from another chain?

Personally, I would have preferred a store selling something a bit more edgy. M&Co is very similar to Peacocks in Ware. Even Primark would have been better (PriMarni, to the fashionistas among you!)

Mrs P here: at least the new shop has larger sizes (on the website, admittedly, time will tell with the shop) and ok, so it's not designer labels, but at least there'll be a clothing outlet that actually acknowledges that there are women out there that aren't being catered for. I'll withhold judgement on the shop until being able to get up close to the clothes in person. Newgirl - if they're a cheapo old ladies shop, where do you get your clothes from? I always thought Ann Harvey & Edinboro' Woolen Mill were old ladies shops (though NOT cheap).

Just had a look at the site, it seems quite promising to me. I dont know the chain myself but it doesn't look like an old ladies shop to me, more like a family place. I would have thought it would be more competition to Matalan than the charity shops. I also noticed they do clothes for tall women....woohoo!!! As a 6 footer myself I never managed to get stuff long enough for me. Needless to say I'm am keeping my fingers well and truly crossed! [:)]

For goodness sake, surely Hertford is worth a bit more than M&Co...or whatever it is....It is getting more like Stevenage everyday. Even a Next store would have been better (not good, but better)...lets hope it closes soon.

We seem to be very good at bashing things before they've even started/opened. Can we just hang fire until the place has opened & *then* make a judgement? How many who have slated them have actual experience of going into one of the other shops and how many are responding to other's posts and making assumptions?

Mrs P - I'm not saying "cheapo old ladies shop" because I haven't been in one and don't know what I am talking about. They are only half a step away from Peacocks in style and price. I am not averse to chainstore shopping but we need something in between the EWM age range, the designer shops prices and the teenagers "New Look". If I need basic clothes at a reasonable price and quality, I will travel to Welwyn for the Marks and Spencers and Next type clothes. This applies to clothes for children too. People in my office in Hertford will travel miles just to visit a Next or River Island. I never heard of anyone making a special trip just to get to Mackays.

To be honest I am surprised that any new comapny wants to come to Hertford if this the reaction they get before they even set up! Why not hold fire until they are here and then make a conclusion instead of 'poopooing' them before they even get here [?]

Well - the distinguishing feature of a chainstore is that there is NO distinguishing feature. I can't imagine that the Hertford one will be any different to the others and, therefore, don't really need to wait for it to actually arrive. It's not often that such a big unit comes up and you can't help hoping something good will set up in it. Something to tempt me into town apart from Serendipity. It also makes me wonder what on earth the demographics for Hertford show up that make us a magnet for Mackays??? Having said that, virtually any shop is better than an empty one. I'm just personally disappointed to have lost a decent book shop to a shop like this.

I cant see the problem. They seem to do a bit of everything, something that is needed in this town, I for one will wait and see. From the site it looked like they could stock stuff that I would be interested in. Oh, and no I aint an 'old lady' just an ordinary Mum who refuses to spend over the top prices for trendy clothes that wont fit over a size 10 anyway. I am sorry if I dont fit into a fashionable deographic but I always thought that one of the good things about Hertford was the variation. Yes it's a shame that we lost Methvans but at least it aint going to be another trendy club/pub.

Primarni would of been such a better choice. A friend of mine was a buyer at M&Mc, it's ok for basics but not very trendy. Would love to see a Topshop. I think that would go down very well
