Beware all pedestrians. Over the past few months, a new craze has entered our society that is both selfish and dangerous. As a pedestrian, I have to negotiate the traffic lights at Tesco twice a day. You can guarantee that as soon as the green man starts to flash, one or two drivers take it upon themselves to jump the red light making it extremely dangerous for us pedestrians. SO, if you are one of these offending people and you see a rather irrate man shouting and pointing at your car, you know what you've done SO DON'T BE SO SELFISH, BE MORE CONSIDERATE, BEFORE YOU CAUSE AN ACCIDENT YOU FOOLS.

This seems to be a problem everywhere. For some reason, a very large amount of drivers think red means "speed up". Most mornings on the Bluecoats roundabout people shoot all over the place, wrong lanes, through red lights etc. Its another effect of the furustration with congestion.

I don't think its poorly trained drivers. I think they get impatient if they know they have to wait, like the rest of us, for the light sequence to change again and think its their God-given right to speed up, cross red lights and generally behave in a manner that if you did it to them, there would be an outcry. Its the fact that they know that no "long arm of the law" is ever going to catch them or stop them..

I totally agree regarding the behaviour of drivers jumping red lights at the Ware Road/Mill lane junction. The other stupid behaviour that can be witnessed there, is drivers exiting Mill Lane to turn right into Ware Road. They can often see that traffic is backed up from the roundabout, but still persist in driving into the junction, thus blocking it. I think it might help if they made it a yellow "box" junction, but then again........... The other place where pedestrians face annihilation is at the traffic lights by the Sportsman. Drivers exiting South Street also speed up when the lights change to red, completely ignoring pedestrians crossing.

Looks as if we should all these days make doubly sure that it is safe to proceed when a light is green and not just assume it is. Doesn't the Highway Code say that anyway?

I don't know about the Highway Code, but I check and double check if crossing the road on foot and assume nothing. Its not all younger drivers at fault but people blinkered into the "I must get home to my dinner/pub/football" brigade as well as people who just forget what they are doing and get blinkered when in their cars...

Unless camera-enforced, I'm not convinced a yellow box would do any good, as these seem to be ignored as routinely as red lights these days.

It's not just at Tesco, although it's likely the wa88er had just jumped the lights there too......I was already crossing the Ware Road on the crossing by the Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon, when an MX6 decided that the red light and the fact that I was half way across weren't going to stop him! Perhaps automatic 'stingers' can be fitted at the stop lines at all traffic lights/crossings - drive over it when the lights are on amber/red and your tyres get burst! Wishful thinking and highly impractical, but a nice thought nonetheless.

Some Cyclists are worse than car drivers. And don't get me started on pedestrians [;)] I was waiting at the old cross lights and some old biddy comes up and makes sure that she pressed every pedestrian button on the corner by the old Wiggingtons Shop. Then she proceded to cross anyway because there was no traffic. Then all the other cars had to wait an extra long time for the pedestrian phase to finish on the lights before we got a chance to go, even though the only pedestrian was half way to castle hall by this time. Oh well never mind - until we stop carrying out our love affairs with motorised transport , I suspect that frustration will continue.

dont get me started. I have never jumped a red light in my 4 and a half years of driving....there have bene instances where the lights move from green to amber and I still go through, because I dont want to suddenly brake hard as a car is sat right up my backside..... The Rush Green Roundabout is a nightmare...so so dodgy at times.

Surely the best solution is to tear down the stupid lights that should never have been put there in the first place. Why is it that people want to litter our once beautiful town with lights, bollards, nice big yellow cameras and all manor of roadside trash??? I understand safety concerns, but before we were taken over by the blackpool lights department I wasn't aware there really was many?? And if it was to ease congestion, well clearly that hasn't worked either.

Quite agreed. When a traffic survey was completed by students around Old Cross to set up the traffic lights, they admitted they went off during the days they should have monitoring the cars and had a coffee!!!!! As so few pedestrians actually wait at Wiggingtons etc I vote to get the roundabout back and put a nice little pelican crossing (the one with the orange balloons on) near to the library, so people can cross there and none of the traffic backs up. If you've ever had the joy of when the lights don't work, the traffic flows beautifully and quite frankly there's no fumes to breathe in and everyone is almost happy. As most pedestrians just cross where and when they want I think they should go with this plan.. I'd back it!!!!

Yes m1ckyg & Drama Queen I quite agree. They spent thousands of pounds of our money to ruin a perfectly good system, the roundabout at Old Cross. You are quite right that when the lights are broken the traffic flows perfectly. I also hate and think traffic calming measures with lumps of concrete sticking out in the middle of the road to stop you are both dangerous, and non environmentally friendly.A good flow of traffic only to be brought to a standstill with these idiotic monstrosities, which are quite lethal at night. Don't get me started, I'll get my coat !!!!

Pedestrian lights are a bit of a pain all round. As a pedestrian you often have to wait ages to get across a busy road (often the lights wait for a gap in the traffic before changing) and as a driver they are frustrating because they change to red, but the pedestrian that pressed the button has long since crossed the road anyway. Bring back the old type (like there were in Ware High Street when I was small) If the lights hadn't changed for a while and a pedestrian pressed the button, then the lights would change immediately - not wait for 5 minutes or a break in the traffic.

I came down Ware Road to the lights by Tesco today, in right lane as I wanted to go into town that way, I was about 3rd in the queue and as the filter changed we started to move forward a "gentleman" in the left lane came up beside me and turned between me and the car in front making signs out of his window with his hands. I am not sure what they meant but I don't think it was hello!!!
