Bengeo Stores

Bengeo Stores opposite the While Lion, I wonder whether it will ever re-open as a shop, or be turned into a house?

Hmm, its used to be a good Post Office years ago, but there's no money in them nowadays. I don't live that near it, but figure that the Co-op serves them pretty well and cannot see another shop making a go of things there when there;s one 700 yrs down the road with a bit of parking here and there....

I think it would be good it it was turned into a chemist. Thats what we need here [:)]

I would imagine it will become housing, just like all the other former corner shops in Bngeo Street. The chances of a pharmacy in Bengeo would be very low as there are no doctor's surgeries to provide trade that they need.

Shame really as a Chemist would be very useful even without the doctors. It will be interesting to see but with the Co-op so close doing the longer hours and papers I can't see a general store working anymore. As long as its not a take away........

I think its unlikely they will allow, due to the nature of the busy road etc a "Chippy" I agree a chemist would be good but as pointed out, all the doctors are in Hertford and if you;re already in town you wouldn;t come back up and then get your prescription! I would like something there, but I don't know what, but NOT a fast food or other place...

but if you are elderly and the doctor comes to you it would be more convenient to get someone to pick it up without going into town plus repeat prescriptions which can be done in advance / posted don't need a surgery visit either so it could be very useful. No fast food on that busy road please, it is bad enough with the co op parking problems, only made worse by the barriers outside the working men's club IMO

My wife said the other night that someone should open that store up as a Chippy and I reckon that's a superb idea. That would do a great trade and wouldn't be under threat from the Co-op either.

OK not worse just moved, it seems to me there is more parking towrads Cross Road and more opposite the CO Op so it hasn't improved things for driving through, though I am sure it is better for pedestrians outside the WMC

It doesn't seem like a good idea to me. No parking outside or near. Residential premises all around it. There could be few places less suitable for a fast food outlet, with all the associated smell, litter, disturbance and delivery problems. Much as I hate to lose another small business, housing is the most suitable use, followed by a specialist shop which people will travel to to visit, rather than be reliant on residents. It doesn't stand a chance as a general store, with the Co-op so near.

The last planning application (for a photographic studio) was refused on 8th November. The planning application to turn it into an osteopath was refused on 2nd October and the application to turn it into a takeaway was turned down on 12th October 2005 for the following reason: "is likely to cause unacceptable levels of noise and disturbance due to the high levels of night time activity associated with such uses, which would be detrimental to the amenities of the occupiers of nearby properties in particular to those living above the parade"

Those applications were for the butchers on The Avenue, not Bengeo Stores. The reason you give also doesn't seem to match the applications - night time osteopath activity? I think Brian (the butcher) applied for permission to sell meals in the evening, only to be refused on the grounds you outline above. The refusal led to his decision to shut up shop.

I believe The Avenue butchers is now owed by the same people as the general store next door, I was told it is to re opening as a Halal butchers but I am not sure. CS stores in Bengeo Street is def being stripped out so we will have to wait and see .......

Indeed it is. The contents now reside in a skip or on the pavement. My own curiosity is driven by the lack of yellow planning notice, indicating that it must remain in the same category of retail that it was before. I think most local residents recognise that as no longer viable, so I wonder why so much effort and investment is being lavished upon the premises. I have not seen the owners lately, only workers. Of course, the owners may have changed.

it was sold to the previous people, who told me they were getting rid about a month before they went, as, surprise surprise, it wasn't making any money. my guess is this is new people who think they can turn the store around, without realising it's not possible with the coop on their doorstep. I told the bloke that used to run it on many occasion that he needed to change direction if he was going to last, maybe as a video/DVD store to compete with blockbusters. they had some DVDs but not many and didn't focus on this.

With the growth of 'on demand' television I expect even Blockbusters to struggle unless they adapt.

Headlines???? Hertford Town Centre needs a Chippy - a real one anyway!

Hertford Town Center needs one, but having one in Bengeo would be cool too. At least that way my Friday night dinner would be sorted, could pick it up on my way home from the station. A chippy wouldn't have to worry about the Co-op either as it wouldn't be in competition with it. Also, it would probably shut at 10.30-11pm at weekends which would mean it shouldn't cause problems with drunks getting rowdy.

No idea what it is going to be but one thing for sure is, it's can't be an off-licence or a sweet shop as it will go under straightaway due to the co-op. It's got to be something completely different.

Living next to a pub with constantly yapping puppy, tuneless karaoke, sporadic Sky footy yells, kids constantly demolishing the fence twice a week and kicking ten balls a day into the garden in summer,to also suffer the constant smell of fish, grease and food waste, right opposite is just too much.[:(] Don't get me wrong, there is an upside to being near a pub, especially since this one does provide some excellent entertainment (check out tommorrow night's act), but a chippy as well would just tip the balance.

Due to also having been somewhat contraversial in my comments on some U.S. forums, you could just follow the trail of vengeful rednecks with shotguns as they hunt down the hated Limey Liberal. Otherwise, you'll find me in The White Lion for the excellent vocal talents of Steve tonight, but without a locally obtained fish & chip supper to soak up the vodka. Oh dear.........[:D]

Just had a look at a picture from 1880 in the Hertford Past and present book at it looks like it was a shop then so don't know if it ever was a house? The upstairs has been a flat for a long time so maybe that is why they don't need permission.

Reply ID 37119

11/03/2007 by James007

Once you have permission for A1 retail use, you can trade as a retail shop. An upgrade to A3 or A5 (restaurant or takeaway) needs premise permission change, classed as an upgrade of use class, due to flues and/or air-conditioning requirements that may affect the local environment. A downgrade back down to retail-only use needs no permission. I reckon it will become 2 flats, due to the surrounding area.... Or maybe a house as it used to be years ago.

It depends on the services offered and whether they fit current consumer demand. For example..........do you recall the internet cafe that opened in Hertford at the time when pc prices were dropping and cheap(er) internet access was becoming available. It ended up as a £1 shop.

Skips cost a lot of money for the hirer, and there is a local dump. If you can't be bothered to use the local dump the council will remove large items for you provided you let them know.

No, it is most definitely not OK. You are making quite a leap in connecting Bengeobabe's comment with the incident you describe. To pose such an accusative question without any evidence to support it is unacceptable. Before you accuse other people of slander, I suggest you take a look in the mirror.

It must be mistaken identity, I very much doubt that you spoke to the new owner. This comment sounds very out of character for him!

do you know him DCI monkfish? I have heard he is a very nice 'bloke'and a lot of people in Bengeo cannot wait for him to open his shop, he is quite well know in and around Hertford and Bengeo I think.

Yes, he recently made me a PC. A familiar face in Hertford on particular days at a certain pub. [;)]

Just out of interest the guy I mentioned earlier builds PCs and stuff as well so like I said I don't think I will be using him. Having said that I will be interested in seeing who this mystery person is as a few seem to know him.

I have no doubt he will do alot of trade and it's good to have a business that's is different but still something most people will use. You couldn't beat the service I get from the guy I use who is also localish so I am in a fortunate position. From what people have said though he sounds like a good person so good luck to him!

Plese do not buy a Dell my freind had has no end of trouble, also thought she had a bargin in PC world, but when the final bill came, with security etc. it was twice the price! I think the shop is due open in May, so the plasterer said. I feel sure that if you see someone there, they will give you a contact number, I have also asked but lost it!

Furrybunny - I'm with you. DELL NO. Was advised by PC Trainer in a past existance, Techy mate and people that have bought them and regreted it. When the shop opens ask the guy for his opinion.

I have to say this is a DELL and touch wood I have had it 18 months and been very happy, much more so than my PC World and TEMPO experiences!

I don't know much about the build quality but when I have had to buy a first/new computer for older relatives, I have ordered them from Dell mainly because I can get them the right thing remotely (and they can pick it up etc) and also getting a non-brand name might firghten the horses! They still seem to be up and running okay. Things to remember when buying a DELL IMHO: 1. Respond to one of there offers in the papers (or booklets that fall out) by typing in the offer/model code given. Sometimes these claim to be for business customers only but I haven't had trouble ordering them. I've never managed to build the same thing for the same price (always worse) just using their site from scratch. 2. DO NOT get MS Vista (yet) and stick to XP if you want the best chance of everything worked (especially if you have existing peripherals) 3. Seek out and destroy the added "service" option as this can sometimes be £150 and has no obvious benefits as far as I can see. They add this on automatically and the option is buried somewhere on the last page of options! 4. Think carefully about whether you need MS office (Word, Excel etc.) If you know that you do want it, buy it as part of the package as it will be more expensive to get seperately later. MS Works that usually comes with the Dell is terrible! However, if all you do is some word processing and not much else, don't waste your money and get OpenOffice for free instead. 5. Once setup, spend an hour or so uninstalling all the cr*p you don't need as Dell fill their new machines with horrible time-limited trial versions of stuff that associate themselves with filetypes and generally get in the way (and confuse relatives!). Bubbashea, if you do decide to get a Dell, I can probably help you set it up and decr*pify it!

I wish him the best of luck, there are no specialist shops like that in town so hopefully he will do well.

So what exactly are ITSDigital going to be offering as a service? Are they solely a computer shop ( taking the IT part of the name) or will be the offering various services for other electronic goods?

From what I can gather, they will be open to the public very shortly, they do upgrades, repairs and can even build you a machine, they will sell laptops and inks, printers/copiers, faxes you name it, just ask! they deal in plasma screens with alround sound etc. wireless connections, broadband and telephone systems. Their main work is for large companies and the local doctors surgeries, but the public is welcome. Don't know the opening hours - sorry, but I know it will be limited opening times
