Can anyone shed some light on this for me. How do you tell what fence belongs to you in your back garden? We live in along a set of terrace houses and are wanting to change one of the fences in our garden but we do not know which one belongs to us. I thought it use to be the fence on the right was yours but i'm not totally sure. We cannot find our survey either which doesn't help us much. Any help would be great thanks.

I thought it was the one on the left as you look from the back of the house. Only thought is contact land registry, they will tell you.

That's strange - where I live (on Foxholes) our fence is the fence to the *right* as you look out of the backdoor....

I was pretty convinced it was the left as John and I said. I've got to re-organise some filing tommorow and check my deeds. Do your neighbours have a clue? Which ever way it is, the person at the wrong end of the terrace get's 2 fences?

Ours is the one on the right as you look out of the back door.... The other thing is that the "nice" side of the fence is on your neighbours side; if there are aris rails etc visible it is your side.

It's only courtesy to show neighbours the 'nice' side of a fence, not the law, so don't take that as read!

Now's not the time to be trying to put up new fences - there's a national shortage of fencing. I thought this was media hype, but friends have recently been trawling round DIY stores unable to find any.

We have always replaced our fence on the left, looking from the house,we gave the neighbour the 'best'side, even when we had a wall built the builder said we would have to have the 'rough' side and the neighbour has the finished side! and try Norbury's or Jewsons for fencing.

Certainly where we live it is the fence on the left that should be our responsibility. (Although the neighbour on the left put his own fence up because a previous owner of My house never maintained his fence and it was always falling down.) My Parents in Ware have responsibility for the fence on the right. Also the reason for having the rails on your own side of the fence is that it is easier to do it that way - it is a bit of a pain to maintain yout fence if the posts are only accessible from somebody elses property.

There is no rule as to left or right. It simply depends on the deeds. I own the border on my right. Funny thing is, the neighbour upgraded that whole side without asking! They did such a good job, I didn't say anything!

With old houses, it's often not even clear from the deeds. It's better to try and come to agreements with your neighbors, if possible, to go 50% on fence renewals.

The general rule is the left hand fence but this can vary, you can look at the way the fence is erected and if the faced side of the fence is toward your neighbours then the fence is more than likely your responsibility. However these are only generalisations and although they give indications as to who the fence belongs to the only sure way to tell is by looking at the deeds or contacting land registry. There is a shortage of 5&6 foot high fence panels as these are the most frequently used, however 3&4 foot are easier to obtain at the moment. The shortage does only seem to be affecting panels though, feather edge boarding and Arris rails still seem to be in supply so it depends on what type of fence you are erecting. Sorry to sound like such an anorak but Mr G is in the trade and even we have had trouble getting hold of fence panels.

Ours is the left side. The neighbours on the other side gave us the "rough" side and it is really rough. A crappy, patched up job they had done to help sell the house. Looks lovely from their side, but dreadful from mine. The only good thing is that our side is southfacing, so we have grown beautiful climbers all over it. Their side is dark and gloomy, always damp, nothing thrives there. And our plants have climbed above fence height, giving them even more shade.
