parking suggestion

I recently went into Gascoigne way car park and didn't have the right change for the pay machines. I thought about it a bit... I could either go and get change and in the meantime get a parking ticket, pay over the odds for staying there only half an hour... or ask someone who was leaving if I could have there ticket, which is what I did. Why don't we all do this...until the council put some machines in there that give change and take notes as well as coins? As an added bonus you get to see what helpful and friendly people live in our area!

I wouldn't suggest this too loudly! - car parks in other areas are beginning to operate systems whereby you have to input part of your car registration number to the ticket machine which is then printed onto the ticket to avoid people passing them on. If I have a lot of time left on my ticket when I leave & see someone arriving, I often offer it to them, and have had the same offer made to me. I can't see there's anything morally wrong with this - payment has been made for a certain period of time for a car park space, so it shouldn't matter which car is in it.

Tickets are non-transferable but in a nice little bit of typically English 'up yours, EHDC' micro-anarchy, it is local custom and practice to make the friendly gesture of passing on car park tickets with time left on them, or just leave them on the ticket machine. I seem to remember a bit of fuss in The Mercury about this a while ago - joyless councillors, alert to potential loss of revenue, mooting the possibility of bringing in the car registration input palavar that Kate describes. Isn't this in fact already happening somewhere locally? I'm not sure. But it's probably only a matter of time. Meantime, take care, ridley, most car parks have CCTV and whilst it would seem very unlikely that anyone would be pursued and fined for transfering a 60p ticket, you just never know... And as someone who uses Hertford North to get into London for the occasionally evening, can I say a big thank-you to all the people returning to Hertford North after a day in town who, in a similar spirit to the car-park anarchists, hand on or leave their one-day travelcards on top of the ticket machines for pikies like me to use! Nice one!

I consider such ticket sharing to be a great British institution, as much part of our cultural heritage as pickled eggs, deck chairs and queueing - keep it up, everyone!

This kind of behaviour will undo the very fabric of our society.

You only have to pick up on other threads in this Forum such as the Illuminati and Searchers of the Holy Grail to know that this sort of talk can only lead to ticket sharing being subject to incarceration in Hertford's secret tunnels.

Just park on the pavements in the town. Everyone else does, and the police/council do nothing. [V]
